The daily specials reflect the chef's love for fresh seafood. Using mostly East-coast seafood flown in from Boston daily, the chef creates dishes like wild mushroom-crusted halibut on horseradish whipped potatoes and roasted sea bass on Caussoulet beans.
There is also a Parisian seafood bar offering towers of Plateau de Fruit de Mer with fresh oysters, clams, shrimp, and lobster.
I have written several five star reviews of this place and am a regular customer, so it is with reluctance that I file a mediocre review. I came for lunch, by myself, during their Sunday brunch but ordered from the breakfast menu. The waitress appeared to be new and inexperienced, did not greet me or ask me if I wanted anything to drink (not even coffee!), but simply asked if I wanted anything to eat. The order (scrambled eggs with salmon and toast) came with one tiny, sad looking piece of toast. I asked the waitress why -- after all, even the greasiest spoon diner will provide two pieces of bread! She checked with the chef and said that no one ever eats the second piece so they stopped providing it. They will give me a second piece on special request (though they did not ask ahead of time whether I wanted one or two). The lack of service and attention to detail is unusual for this place -- probably should not have gone during their brunch. But it was a bad enough experience to report.
Very nice French restaurant with unique wine list for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Super fresh ingredients and perfect vinaigrette on the salads. Attentive, professional service in a bright, warm atmosphere. Highly recommend.
Nice spot for a business lunch, food and service was just right. Not too crowded and quality place.
An undervalued treasure in Oak Park, I'll be back again shortly.
We had a delightful dinner at Hemmingway's Bistro. On a wintery evening mid-week Hemmingway's staff offered us a choice of enticing entrees, a sophisticated wine list and top-quality service. The space is not large but it doesn't feel crowded. We will certainly return to this restaurant soon. It looks like they have a tempting jazz brunch.
Had a great experience, as we usually do, when we came here to celebrate my wife's birthday. Service was excellent--our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly.
Took advantage of the lobster special ... it was wonderful.
Great food, great service, great music! Overall great ambiance
Always excellent service and outstanding meals. We average about 5-6 times of year to have an appointment We thoroughly enjoy each time- meal & staff!!
We met my husband's brother and his wife there for a post-holiday luncheon. It is a warm and welcoming room with a traditional French bistro menu. My cassoulet, the Monday lunch special, was delicious and there was more then enough left for my lunch the next day. My husband enjoyed his steak frites, my sister-in-law her crepe, and my brother-in-law his scallops. We had been here years ago, but it is a long drive from our home, and we had forgotten about it. That won't happen again.
Excellent service, food and presentation!
Superb preparation every time. The waiter and chef put together a special plate for our picky vegetarian daughter. Excellent wine list. The room has character all its own, and can feel in any season like a set from a 1950 movie; one expects to glance over and see Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly at the next table, where they would also be eating well, lingering, their privacy uncompromised.
Love this restaurant. Always dine there when I come to Oak Park
First visit to Hemmingway's Bistro. It lives up to its name both in atmosphere and in menu. The intimate setting and service makes you feel as if you are in Paris. I enjoyed the French Onion Soup and the Smoked Salmon. Many other choices on the menu were tempting as well. I was there with old friends and the quiet atmosphere , even thought it was busy, allowed us to easily have a conversation. I would definitely return if I was nearby.
We love this place. Its perfect for meeting up with someone you haven't seen in a while.
They put us at a lovely little table, bring us drinks, and only come over to take our order & check on us. The wait staff is very knowledgeable and friendly but he seems to take the temperature of each table & knows how much attention they need. He makes great suggestions and the food is always delicious. We usually order the baked brie to share as an appetizer but this time we ordered the cheese plate. It was phenomenal and we will now be torn between the two because both are perfect. I highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed.
The service was extremely slow! Only 1 dish was good of 5. Hugh disappointment! I won’t be coming back ever!
Always wonderful food and service - Aron is the best! Oysters and champagne are always perfect and the entrees are a great mix of classic bistro and more innovative finishes from mussels and frites to duck and gnocchi.
Tried their Sunday jazz brunch. Hemmingway’s never disappoints me. The atmosphere is very authentic and cozy. Brunch wasn’t as good to me as their dinners but festive and delicious and will return.
Restaurant was loud at the bar area. Service was sporadic on this occasion.
Server was very nice but made several mistakes (wrong soup, forgot to order soufflé so it took an hour after entrees we’re done, never brought tea) and these were not acknowledged. We will be back because we support local businesses and love the place but this was a disappointment.
We had a bad experience a few years ago and had not been back. We decided to give it a try again and we are so glad we did. The service was outstanding, the food was excellent, and we love the charming ambience. We will be back often. We are so happy to have this restaurant back in our rotation.
I have been to Hemmingway's Bistro multiple times but this was the first time for breakfast. I had three friends with me and they absolutely loved it and plan to go again. I enjoy the quiet ambiance and the staff is so friendly.
Delicious and a lovely way to celebrate our anniversary. We have been to Hemmingway's often over the past 12 years and it has always been a wonderful experience.
Bistro omelette was bland. I don’t recall tasting cheese. The salt helped. Perhaps I will try out the boullaibasse next time
As always, a perfect dining experience. We took guests & they were wowed!!
Warm convivial atmosphere. Server was friendly, informative and fun. Food as always was amazing! Great wine. Music was a nice touch and just the right level.
Excellent service and decor added to the delightful menu. Seating was a little cramped, but acceptable. Neighbors conversations were annoying when they were discourteous you loud, but ignorable.
We will look forward to our. Next visit.
Thank you Hemmingway’s!
Hemmingway’s is our go to for French Bistro food. It’s consistently good, great ambiance and very good service. Excellent wine list and very good desserts!
Overall a decent meal but definitely not fantastic. Drinks were delicious, cheese plate was wonderful and french onion soup was great. Main course was were things went off the rails a bit. Steak Frites was ordered as medium rare but came out medium well, dry and with quite a bit of gristle. The pot pie was good but the menu should stipulate that it includes mushrooms. We took the servers recommendation on the dessert a chambord soufflé, which we were advised would take 30 minutes to prepare. So we placed that order when we placed our dinner order and asked that the server time it appropriately. Sadly our dinner plates were cleared and we waited roughly 30 minutes before we caught our server to advise that unfortunately we had to leave as we had another engagement. The server insisted on bringing the dessert which was extremely hot. We attempted to enjoy it as I signed the credit card slip and burned my tongue as a result. Subsequently we were then late to our other engagement. Really was started out wonderfully kind of ended in flames. Very disappointing but based on the other reviews I’m guessing our experience was a one-off. We will probably try again but not for a while.
The Bread that they put out on the table is sooo good. Crusty on the outside and soft inside. I had a Seafood entree with lobster scallops shrimp asparagus and a cream sauce all wrapped up and baked in a phyllo dough. Delicious. My friend had the ever popular white fish. Hard to find too many French Restaurants now a days.
Everything was good, things got very busy and noisy, and we had to wait an extra 10 minutes for our check.
Open Table needs to correct their spelling of Hemingway’s.
A wonderfully romantic spot for our anniversary celebration. The server was perfect and teh food was wonderful. All in all a great experience. We will definitely return!
Excellent menu with lots of great choices. Everything we had was very good. I highly recommend Hemmingway's.
The food was excellent - dessert was decadent. The service was peerless. The price mounts up, which is the only drawback. A great restaurant for special occasions.
Fine French Food..bistro ambiance, good quality and excellent service. We’ve been patrons for years. Love going here! The French onion soup, omelettes and fresh fish choices do not disappoint! Enjoy a Pernod on the rocks to start. Sublime.
We were shocked at the price of the brunch since the venue's web site did not indicate a brunch menu on Sundays.
Good brunch menu.
Friendly attentive service.
Lovely room — but quite noisy (from other diners).
Food is awesome. Service was off.
