The wait staff was inattentive. When a server brought the main course, she reached across one person who had already been served to put the plate in front of someone else. They never asked how the food tasted. It took 15 min to get dessert. The waiter must have taken a quick smoke break because he reeked so strongly of smoke that we thought someone at the next table was smoking. Finally, we were never thanked for coming to the restaurant.
The food was so great will be back the service was great and drinks
Recently had a wonderful dinner at the Hearth. The appetizers, cocktails, main entrée and dessert were all fabulous with wonderful textures and flavors. I highly recommend this restaurant which in addition to great food has attentive service and good ambiance. Fun for getting together with friends and family or for date nite.
Hearth continues to be a wonderful neighborhood and regional spot. It has one of those menus where you'd like to say "One of each, please." Three people in our party had scallops, one had the lamb. Everyone was happy. Variety of starters and chocolate tart for dessert similarly received. My wine-maven friend really liked the wine choices and their prices.
Went for my birthday. Love the bar and the blood orange Manhattan. Dinner was great and our waiter very engaging. Cozy fireplaces.
Devine food!Every nite was scrumptious.
Yummy drinks.
Romantic!
Hearth is a consistently superb restaurant. Comfortable room, attentive and friendly staff, and a wonderful creative chef. The menu changes with the availability of seasonal ingredients and is always excellent. It is easy to be enthusiastic in contemplating your next visit.
Wonderful as always! We have dined here several times and the experience, food, ambiance and service are superb! We will be back!
Excellent across the board!!!
Excellent meal. Venison was tender and the duck, short ribs and bass were excellent as well as expressed by the rest of my family. Atmosphere is quit, cozy and warm and service very good. Strongly recommend!
Altho it met most of the criteria & recommendation as for "a convenient rendezvous place for a quiet dinner", I cannot agree with the 'dinner' component, I could not recommend it as a place to enjoy anything unique or outstanding in the food dept. There is a quiet...almost empty.... bar across the hall, if all you wanted was a drink. I thought the risotto was slightly under-done & somewhat boring. I could barely taste the cheese within. I've had better tasting cornbread from a box. My scallops were properly cooked through, but needed some kind of flavor. The bed of brown unidentifiable legume bed for them was similar. My wife said the rib entry was flavorful but tough. Four medium sized scallops & 1/2 cup max for it made for a small entry (come on guys, lentils or whatever are cheap! The dessert choices were few & nothing seemed desirable. The "homemade" orange sorbet needed more orange flavor. Altho it was only $4/tablespoon full, for $8 for a real "scoop" I would have felt ripped off. It confirmed my hypothesis that 'don't bother with dessert if the entries are ordinary'.
I left hungry for my $45/person without alcohol.
Expert food preparation and presentation far exceeded all expectations.
The place is intimate and the noise level is minimal, even when pretty full.
The value is outstanding. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough.
Excellent service, delicious, lovely ambiance!
First time there with another couple. Very disappointed with the experience. First, they were out of the wine we wanted (St innocent Pinot Noir). Our server asked if we wanted bread and brought us each a delicious warm roll but never asked if we wanted more bread. The white bean soup and tuna tartare were very good, but the portion of the tuna was extremely small for the price. As for entrees, the portion of scallops was miniature, the steak mediocre, the venison tough and lacking flavor and the short ribs very good. For dessert, 3 of us ordered a scoop of ice cream which was a quarter scoop at best but delicious. The bread pudding was fine. All of us dine out frequently and all of us rated this restaurant as overly priced for uneven food and extremely small portions. A nice ambiance but we cannot recommendation Hearth st all.
The service was excellent and the food was delicious. We were family celebrating a belated birthday. Our wishes for no fanfare were honored. We did not feel rushed. I assume no one else did either because most were there when we arrived and left just before we did near to closing time.
Wonderful dinner! Very cozy and the food great! They Did not rush us and let us stay as long as we wanted. Would highly recommend this place!
First time at Hearth. Exceeded expectations on every level. Will be back.
We came here for Valentine's Day Prix Fixe. Usually, that's a challenging time to dine, and restaurants aren't at their best. But Hearth was amazing! Every course was a delight--taste, and appearance. The wine pairings went well with the food, and were at a good value. Service was outstanding--not just fast and friendly, but also very well informed about the food and wine, so very much a learning experience. Very pleasant ambiance...we were in a room with a view of a snow-covered yard. Wow. We will have to go again. (And again!) Our new "best in Evanston" restaurant.
Terrific experience! Food was creative but not fussy. Beautiful presentations. The service was impeccable and their wine pairings were interesting/perfect. We will definitely return.
We had the $65 prix fixe four course dinner on Valentine's Day.
Every course was delicious and interesting. This chef clearly knows how to combine flavors, textures and ingredients in a way that is both delicious and harmonious. Great food, service and ambience without costing a fortune. Highly recommended !
Valentines Day
Fantastic! Loved getting drinks in the lounge by the fire. So cozy. The food was phenomenal!
We loved everything from apps to dessert. Especially the orange sorbet with mint. The only (minor but it was noticed by all four of us)negative was it was a bit too warm in the dining room. We were furthest from the fire. It was Saturday February 10th. We will be back!
Terrific food and Greg is a fantastic server. Wish we could have been in the main room, but the meal was so good it didn’t matter much.
Was really surprised because we’ve had so many good meals there, but we heard the chef had changed. The appetizer was very good, the mains were ridiculously salty, and the dessert was blah.
Delightful Restaurant Week meal; fine service, food excellent!
The cozy low-lit dining room with fireplace was perfect on a cold, snowy evening. All dishes were delicious and well presented. The staff was attentive and friendly. First time here - will definitely be back and I've already recommended Hearth to friends and coworkers.
Our waiter was great. The food was delicious. I would definitely recommend the cocktails and the restaurant week menu was awesome. I had the trout and it was so good my wife ordered a piece on the side of her meal. You can definitely tell the chef had a flavor profile/theme in mind, but everything was great!
The food is awesome!!!!!! Will definitely come back.
Excellent food (especially the duck breast), well presented, conversation friendly. Good value in Restaurant Week.
I had the Norwegian trout, which was excellent. Service as outstanding, and the atmosphere was quiet and calm.
Not sure how this restaurant has gotten so many good reviews. Terrible experience. The food was completely bland. The portion sizes were way too small. The service was extremely slow, and the waiter acted like he didn't even want to be there. The best thing eaten at this restaurant was the free bread. This place is super pretentious. I will never go back. Garbage!
Hearth never disappoints; great spot for a date the quality of the food never disappoints.
I came here with my partner during Restaurant Week. We chose Hearth because of all the Evanston restaurants participating in Restaurant Week, Hearth had the most interesting and varied menu offerings. The atmosphere is very warm and festive and elegant yet the service is down to earth and friendly without being stuffy. Loved each of the 3 courses we sampled and the service was top notch
Hearth was a great Restaurant Week discovery for us.
The perfect place to celebrate your birthday, the staff was great and the food!!
Excellent location for a nice dinner in Evanston. Definitely recommend.
We ate dinner here for Restaurant Week, and the menu had nice choices and was a good value. The food was good and the waiter was attentive, but the service was very SLOW. More that a 30 minute wait between each course.
Surprisingly good. Everything we ordered (from the Restaurant Week menu) looked and tasted great. Every course was fresh and interesting. I'm not a foodie, yet found myself talking about the food much of the night. It was our first visit - would definitely go back again.
Hearth is Fantastic! The atmosphere, staff and food superb!
