Old-world charm, culinary innovation, and hyper-local produce...The Healesville Hotel in the heart of the Yarra Valley is always in tune with the seasons, making it a year-round fave for locals and tourists on the winery trail. Beyond the Edwardian building itself, the restaurant is a stunner when it comes to rustic and honest cooking.
While there’s traditional pub fare on offer in addition to some fancier dishes like roasted wandin quail and slow roasted berkshire pork. The menu rotates weekly, though you can count on just-plucked-from-the-garden herbs and produce making an appearance. Treat yourself to a hospitable and heavenly lunch or dinner at Healesville Hotel, it will be a dining experience to remember.
Whilst the atmosphere, service (apart from one mishap) was great, we were disappointed that the menu had drastically changed from what was online, as one of my colleagues is quite a fussy eater, and was unhappy with the remaining options. In addition, we had noted upon booking that we were looking for the roast. Even though I booked well in advance, it was not until the day before arrival we were advised it was not available anymore as it has ceased. Again it's on the online menu still, and there was advertisements in the ladies bathroom another colleague advised. As the update was advised so late in the piece, we were unable to change plans as we had already booked transport to the lunch, and had arranged our day around the roast lunch. This was unfortunate.
So basically, service on the day great, before we arrived not so much.
I will say staff were lovely, food was nice, but nothing blew our minds, and were a bit disappointed with our starters. Mains were good, and the sides were good, but for the price we all noted that we had cheaper and tastier pub meals else where.
Lovely setting, and we will be back one day, as we all thought the food was good, but not amazing, and according to locals we meet later on, the food is normally above and beyond.
Lovely old building excellent table service good food
Overall very disappointing. Food was not great and it was difficult to get the staff's attention.
Great rustic food & feel. Local & seasonal produce. Great wine list. Happy to accommodate our 8 month old for a Wed lunch session.
Fabulous food! Charming service and a very reasonable bill at the end!
We ordered two dishes, the shank and the pork cutlet... which was recommended by other diners on Google reviews. Am sorry to say, it didnt taste good... at all. I am not sure if I just have the wrong taste palette, but these both dishes just didnt come across good. Perhaps other dishes taste better, I dont know but i dont think I'd come back. So sorry. Service was good though.
Cosy warm room. Family friendly. Delicious roast dinner. Gravy could be thicker and more depth in flavour. Excellent service.
Being as we are Healesville residents this is our ‘go to’ place for a celebration. It’s always friendly and welcoming and after 10 years I cannot fault one meal that we’ve enjoyed here. We love bringing our city friends here for a memorable meal and occasion.
food was great. we finished everything. it was a quiet day and we didn't wait long for our lunch to come. waitress was very courteous n pleasant and an ample parking at the back
A popular favourite of ours in the Yarra Valley - been going there for decades! Great place to stop on the way back to town from the snowfields. Cornbread was outstanding...
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. The food was over-priced and underwhelming. The meat was chewy, hard to cut and not well cooked. The combinations of flavours just didn't gell - curry sauce with lamb shanks was really odd. Barramundi did not taste fresh. For that price, I would have expected better.
Great staff and food. Generous servings with something for everyone on the menu.
Lovely venue, friendly staff but all five of us felt the food was very average (across 4 different meals). I wouldn’t return.
Great place, excellent service and beautiful wine.
Lovely venue with a good selection of wine and craft beers. Service was a little slow but frequently. Have been here before and had lots of sides which again were really great. Food this time not quite where it normally is so potentially an off night for a good place.
Weekend away with hubby and we stayed at the Healesville Hotel and dined there also. Was the most divine food. They even brought up our desserts to our room because we couldn't fit them in right after our main meals in the restaurant as they were of a more than substantial size! Highly recommend the chargrilled cauliflower - it was an amazing side dish. Both our main courses were cooked exactly to perfection (both steaks but different types), and the service was so friendly, efficient accommodating and informative - especially when it came to me selecting an aperitif gin to start with from their very lengthy list of Australian gins available! Love the local produce and how fresh and tasty everything is in this region - cannot get better food than this anywhere else in the world but here in Australia.
Definitely coming back and have already raved about the hotel and the restaurant to several friends in the last 24 hours since we've been back home!
Lovely atmosphere with the open fire on a cold day. Very friendly waitress.
Food and service were great as usual!
The setting of this hotel is beautiful. The food and service were terrible. The food was ridiculously bland and no-one even checked when I didn’t eat it.
we were unaware that there was a fixed menu (roast lunch) and were immediately disappointed therefore. When the main course arrived all of the components were barely warm and the thick slices of beef were cold. Upon request they were replaced - as they were now significantly less rare I suspect they were put in the microwave or under the griller.
Love it, love it, love it. Sat at the fireplace and was charmed by the local waiting staff. They knew their product and what we looked for. Lot's of group tables about - which made the ambience a bit noisy - but a lovely evening. The special - Rib Eye - was spectacular.
My friends and I enjoyed our recent meal at the venue. We found the staff were happy to listen to our requests and provide answers about the type of food and the wines to compliment each dish. The atmosphere was great given it was a cold day.
excellent service from young but polite and experienced staff
beautifully presented and cooked food with plenty to eat
The food was exceptional. The dining room was warm and inviting, set out with bountiful autumnal displays and a glowing fire place. The menu accommodated our party of three, we ordered two mains and some sides which we shared together. We were well attended to throughout the evening. It did take some time for our food to arrive, so it was late when we finished dinner, and we’d filled up the wait with extra wine, so unfortunately we didn’t get to dessert, which I’m sure would have been amazing.
This is the second time we have been to the Healesville hotel, and we were excited about coming back. Unfortunately the food was disappointing. Steak was grisly & chewy, chips were cold. Fortunately my Pork chop was nice. Not sure we would return.
Love Sunday Roasts at Healesville Hotel! We have been going there a few times every Winter since the event started. Fabulous service and food every time!
Best Sunday roast on the planet Magnificent food and outstanding service
Lovely spot, just found a tad strange to be seated with drink menus, drink order taken, then left without food menus. We do like to have a nibble with our ore dinner drinks. Caught one waitress’ eye and has to ask for a food menu. Just rather bizarre to not be seated with both drinks and food menu.
Food was lovely - found the service to be without warmth, but fairly efficient - overall experience, ok, but not a feeling of welcome, or wishing to linger.
This was our first visit. We had a fantastic evening. The food was delicious and the service excellent.
Great venue, but quality of food and menu selection has taken a dive since our last visit.
A few notes to make.
- Average good for dining (over cooked & very dry)
- Wine by the glass menu needs better selection, should have more local selection.
- Atmosphere is very dark and quiet, needs some nice music on in the background to kill the silence.
- Service is average, dumping plates on the table and leaving super quick - appearing too rushed even though it was a quiet evening.
A friendly, warm inviting pub and restaurant with great winelist. The food is simple but structural with fabolous favours. We had the chicken pate - with a hint of orange peel and deliciously light texture with Ricki's bikkies. The wood fired pumpkin with goats curd was yummy as well as the baked chicken which had been marinated in garlic and oil and wood roasted. The staff are upbeat and friendly and the whole evening was delightful. The duty manager even drove us back to our hotel as no taxis were working on Sunday evening. Outstanding!
Great old pub with lovely ambience and simple fresh food. We had the chicken liver pate fabulous light and delicate use of orange. Mains were pork chop and steak delicious. We will return.
Fish and tiger prawn pie had hardly any fish and 2 baby shrimp no tiger prawns. Mostly potatoes and had no flavor. Massive amounts of salt could not save the fish. Poor service as well. Forgot our side dish and ignored us after we finished. I generally don’t pan restaurants but much better options in Healesville.
We had a beautiful lunch with friends. The setting was quaint and warm. Service good. The chicken was excellent, best I have ever had. Overall a lovely memorable day.
The Entree' of OYSTERS produced the tiniest oysters ever encountered; making them very difficult to remove from the shell, given the large forks provided ! Tasted of little or nothing!
The Main of SIRLOIN STEAK produced a very grissly piece of steak and given the cheap steak knife provided made it even more difficult to cut ! Generally unedible!
On the PLUS side we were discounted one steak from the two steak order.
Beautiful building. Lovely staff. Fairly meaty menu, but delicious.
Beautiful hotel with delicious food and friendly service!
The food is not great but everything else is pretty good
Beautiful dining room, but service was mixed and some dishes were bland (pasta) and some items not available (roast chicken). The menu is short (only 4-5 mains) and some items were already sold out at 6pm on a Saturday night which is pretty poor.
