Executive Chef Robert Curtis's Hazel is in the Atlantic Plumbing development in DC’s Shaw neighborhood with an intimate 40 seat dining room and a 16 seat bar that opens up to the extensive patio and additional outdoor private dining space. Hazel features Chef Robert's style of progressive American cuisine -- combining flavors from around the world with traditional and contemporary techniques to create dishes that are elegant, distinctive and satisfying. Beer Director Greg Engert and Iron Gate Spirits Manager Nick Farrell have curated a refined beverage program that highlights the delicate, fresh flavors of Rob's cuisine.
Everything was excellent—food, service and drinks. Highly recommend this spot for a twist on the traditional brunch.

We arrived right on time for our reservation but were told the restaurant was significantly overbooked and we could sit outside if we wanted. Given the temperature (although did have heaters) it was quite chilly. We waited outside for over an hour before a table was open for us. Overall the food was delicious, but the amount of food for the price was surprising. Between 4 of us we spent over $200 on dinner (not including the drinks in the cold) and left somewhat hungry. So - while yummy - the price for value was low - but we'd go back but with different expectations - snacks not dinner.
Everything was amazing. Just got back and had to do a review. The service was amazing in that multiple people stopped by to check on us, not just our main server, Kavon, who was also perfect. And apparently, all the servers share tips so there is incentive for everyone to take care of everyone. It was the perfect amount of attentiveness.
Everything we ordered was at the same time full of flavor, but not overbearing with any one ingredient. We got the tahini for our bread and it was great. The brussel sprouts with the egg was fresh and delicious (not cooked to death like brussels at many spots). The crispy rice with the duck confit was amazing both in texture and understated flavor. The short ribs were absolutely scrumptious. Melted in my mouth, and again the flavor is on point - not overkilled with spices, but perfectly prepared to allow the flavor of the actual food to come through with absolute appropriateness.
The ambiance and the drinks were on point. Great place for intimate conversation, and an overall relaxing environment. Looking forward to going back in the spring to enjoy their large outdoor seating area, which looks equally inviting.
Service was friendly but somewhat aloof. We were seated at a table right next to an open kitchen, so there was tons of traffic from wait staff and distracting noise coming from the kitchen. I understand they are trying to utilize what would otherwise be wasted space, but why would you ever put a waiter staging area right next to people dining? Most of the food was good. You could tell it was made from fresh ingredients, but it was not all that creative. Only two or three items on the limited menu were eye popping. Overall, it is over priced for food and a disappointed atmosphere in an otherwise trendy neighborhood.
Fabulous experience through and through. Excellent value for money and a superb service team combined with creative food make for a special memory.

What a stellar brunch! The food is incredibly creative with many Korean- and Asian-inspired flavors: think scrambled eggs with kimchi, topped with a garlic aioli and bonito flakes... or a bibimbap/donburi rice bowl with smoked hamachi and pickled accouterments. SO GOOD. Service is outstanding with servers always there when you need them to be. And the ambiance of enjoying a leisurely brunch on the outdoor patio is unparalleled. Highly recommended!!!
While Hazel creates an inviting atmosphere with fun and creative sounding dishes, all of the flavors of the meal were off. My sister and I shared 4 items and none of them were particularly tasty. I rarely dislike food, but there was one asparagus dish that I could not take more than one bite of. Chef seems to be confused about how to harmonize flavors. I will not be going back to Hazel.

The place has great ambience! We sat outside, which was delightful. However, our waiter was neither warm nor welcoming and had an odd affect until the end when he was giving us our bill. The food was okay. We were advised by the waiter to get way more food than we needed; we were glad to not have listened fully. The place is cute, but it was disappointing on the whole. I do not intend to return, unfortunately.

Two of us came to Hazel to celebrate a graduation and sat outside. The service was very kind and personable, and the server gave a good wine recommendation.
Pea shoot salad: salty! but really good, just needed a lighter hand
Crab salad: is the bomb digity. Sweet crab meat paired with crunchy radish and acid from the pickled strawberry. This was our favorite
Potatoes: also, SO GOOD! the familiarity of potatoes and kale with ranch, but better.
Falafel: so good. The fennel jam was perfect and the yogurt sauce is interesting
Beets and Shrimp: the shrimp were cooked perfectly, but the peanut mole was a litttttle heavy in my opinion
Miso Blondie with pineapple: It's dessert. so it's always good. That said, the blondie was over baked and cold. Totally fine that theyre baked earlier in the day but it either needs to be tender at room temp or warmed up! I think they're baked in muffin tins, but chef you should bake them in a pan and cut into squares!!
Overall, it was so good. It's both tweezer food and unpretentious. It's familiar but surprising. And the food is really good, I just have a very high bar set.
Ducked up was good. Food was good. Service was friendly when they came around. Overall decent spot, you should try, especially if you live in the neighborhood. Pretty convenient and good food.
Celebrated a wedding anniversary here. Service was everything...so much fun, attentive care. Only surpassed by the Nirvana-like experience which was the food. You already know it's a cool ambience. Just do it.

This was our fourth dinner at Hazel; we should have stopped after three previous enjoyable visits. While I will again reward high marks for the service and ambiance, the food was remarkably a disappointment. Hence we cannot praise this outing. The waiter was gracious and recognized our disappointment but ultimately a review for a restaurant must be based on the food. Thus a “fair” score.
Great find in the Shaw area. Imaginative menu gives enough choices, but not expansive. Nice bar, solid drinks. Wine list complete, but ask for help as you may not recognize familiar vintners. Our service was exceptional. Great al fresco when the weather’s good!
Loved the food, the the waiter we had was very rude. It was upsetting because this used to be my favorite place in DC near U Street, and now that experience left me with a bad feeling about Hazel
The “ducked up” special was fantastic, and at the end of our meal the manager brought our champagne for the birthday we were celebrating, making for a great end to our experience there.

Came to Hazel for my husband's birthday and ate the duck dinner. It was excellent and filling. The wine and beer selection was incredible. Our waiter was also so nice and funny. He truly provided excellent service and brought out a candle with our dessert. Always a pleasure to go to Hazel!

Excellent food, but the service was rather poor. Staff is very kind, but overall unattentive and slow.
Underwhelming. First they sat us right next to another couple literally 2 inches apart and the whole restaurant was empty. I asked to try one beer and they charged me. The chefs best talent is plating. While everything looked amazing it didn't taste the same. Especially the potatoes which had absolutely zero taste. They even asked why we didn't eat it twice and I told them. Yet they still kept it on the check. So this place is a absolute waste of money. One good thing was the outside was cute.

We had the best service in ages. Ate outside and the setting is lovely and avoids streetside loud environments that dominate outdoor dining in DC. Food was great as were drinks and wine. Would go again!!! So excited to have something so nice move into the neighborhood.

When I first when to Hazel, I was underwhelmed. I went back again as many of my friends raved about it. It was significantly better the second time around, as it had a different menu. We ordered 4-5 dishes and they were all excellent! We started with the zucchini bread, steak tartar, gnocchi, and the shrimp. We also got a very interesting dessert that was meh.
I would recommend folks to give Hazel a try or another try.
Hazel has an amazing ambiance, and we’ve been to Hazel a number of times for drinks, but tonight was our first time to go for dinner. At $16-22 for tapas, the night quickly escalated from “date night” to “investment”. Ultimately, for the prices, it’s better a drinks place with shareables than a dinner place.
