Wow. Really liked our first meal at Hazel and look forward to returning. Excellent service and because we ate very early (5:30-7) on a Saturday, it was quiet. Loved the steak tartare and the special, John Dory. The rock shrimp and gnocchi were fine, but I would try something else the next time, which I hope is soon!

Really enjoyed my first experience at Hazel. Donnie, our server, was very acquainted with the menu and gave us great recommendations. The food was original, inventive, thought provoking and absolutely delicious. Particularly enjoyed the eel, the gnocchi and the steak tartare. Great authentic winter cocktails and wine list. We skipped dessert so I couldn’t comment, but hope to return for it soon!

Creative and complex flavors in almost every dish. Best sunchokes I’ve ever had.

It’s a beautiful place and makes a nice effort, but I️ found the menu, food, portions, and prices all very pretentious. It’s trying to be trendy, but does better leaving you slightly hungry and poorer.

Creative menu options in a sleek modern setting. The concept is shared plates, though you could clearly decide to have a dish to yourself. Rock Shrimp was our favorite of the several plates we ordered; served with celery root cut into wide noodle-like pieces with a delicious lime and walnut curry sauce. The waitress was able to make several very good recommendations, which added to the positive experience. It is a bit pricy - no wine by the glass for less than $12 or $13, as I recall; plates range from the mid-teens up, so if you order three as we did, plus a cocktail and a glass of wine, the bill is three digits quite easily. That being said, the creativity of the food and its quality preparation is what you are paying for.

We arrived right at the time of our reservation and were seated promptly. We were given a complementary sparkling wine since it was the birthday of one of our diners. The atmosphere was lively, which was awesome and the bar looked like a lot of fun. As the restaurant reached capacity, though, our server eventually abandoned us. He was clearly overwhelmed, and many tables started strong avoided, including ours.

As for the food, it was very good...but not worthy of making this a destination dining spot. The kanpachi crudo was great, and the smoked onion ciabatta was really tasty. The sun chokes were overdressed, so quickly lost their appeal. The gnocchi was overrated by a lot - just not enough flavor in the ragu. I’d go back if I were in the area (ie, pre-show at 9:30 Club), but Hazel doesn’t stand out among the many quality restaurants that have opened in the past 2-3 years.

Super disappointed by our experience at Hazel. We had indicated that it was our anniversary in our reservation and also when we were called twice to confirm our reservation. We were seated at a communal table next to four other diners - only separated by a few succulent plants. Our waiter was completely low energy and while knowledgable about the menu when asked, hardly proactive. Everything we ordered had the same flavor palate - while many dishes were tasty (i.e. the beef tartar) - everything started to taste the same. The handcrafted cocktails were wonderful and very creative. As we ordered our dessert course, we notice another couple had been seated in an intimate booth and were brought glasses of champagne to celebrate some special event. I mentioned to our waiter it was our anniversary and he said, "cool". At this point, I was fed up and asked if we could move to the bar for our dessert course so we would no longer have to hear the loud conversation of the four people seated at our table. The bar was empty - had great fluffy seats- and our experience improved exponentially due to the excellent bar tender. She was very attentive, delightful energy, unprompted brought us extra bread for our cheese course and then brought us a glass of champagne at the very end of our experience. But for her, our Hazel experience would have been a total bust. I would recommend Hazel for cocktails with friends but not for celebrating a special event or a romantic meal.

We ordered the lazy susan duck dinner and the smoked onion ciabatta. The duck was absolutely delicious. We ended up taking home leftovers as the amount of food was plenty for two people. Our waitress was very kind, pleasant and knowledgeable. We were celebrating a birthday; the staff made sure the dining experience was enjoyable and memorable with a taste of sparkling wine to start off the night and a glass of port at the end.

Truthfully we cannot give a review of the regular menu, as it would not be fair to the kitchen. The prix fixe menu for NYE wasn't bad. Portions were small except the fourth course, and the dessert was unimaginative and boring. Ultimately the service at our table ruined the food experience for us.

Looking to stay away from the DC maddness on NYE, we chose this restaurant because when we called to inquire about NYE festivities, we were told nothing special was planned. We got there and had to wait an hour to get seated. We waited t the Bar, and the bar staff was great, they made our wait very enjoyable. When seated, we found out the menu was prix fixe. Not what we expected from the phone call from the previous day, however it was fine. We were a bit disappointed we wouldn't be able to taste the sticky crunchy ribs, but we were enjoying ourselves until that point...

My wife doesn't eat beef, the only choice for course four... Hasn't since she was in high school. Our waiter argued with us for a good five minutes about no substitutions, and was not very nice about it. We offered to pay for a substitution or even repeat a course to no avail. We had to explain she was essentially allergic to beef, before he would inquire about a substitution, which the kitchen allowed. After that, nothing but attitude. We ordered a bottle of bubbly. It never came. We had to stop one of the managers to get it for us. At one point in the evening the manager who had brought us our bottle essentially became our waiter... Until the check came. The first time we got a smile, please, or thank you. We tipped 15%... (My initial 5% tip was vetoed by my wife). He was visibly annoyed when he picked up the slip, and even cut his eyes at us when we went to leave.

The bar picked up our drinks because of the wait and even stopped by out table twice through the evening to crack a few jokes. They really helped make the night for us. We would come back for drinks in a heartbeat.

Went for dinner on New Years Eve. $85 for a prix fixe 6 course meal... each course was very small and quality was just okay. Service was fine but felt very impersonal. Poor value for the money.

I had made a note in the reservation about this being a special occasion but there was no mention of it during our entire meal. Our server was minimally enthusiastic about serving us, the lady delivering the food was far friendlier and welcoming. We ordered 5 dishes. Probably more than the 2 of us needed. Our last dish, chicken Mapo had a familiar flavor from another restaurant but was terribly sweet and the Szechuan spice made our tongues tingle in an unpleasant way. We had a few bites and took the rest to go. Won’t finish it though. The onion ciabatta was fabulous though! The sunchokes were interesting but way overdressed. Just too much acidity. The kimchi gnocchi was very rich and tasty but also too much acidity. Zucchini bread and foie gras was fabulous. Probably won’t go back. We love Roses Luxury and have never had one dish we didn’t like.

My husband and I shared 5 dishes. The banana bread , ribs, carrots, sweet potatoes, and gnocchi. The banana bread and gnocchi were good I did not care from the other three dishes. I ordered peanut butter and chocolate cake for dessert. I am a huge BP & chocolate fan so I was very excited about this dish. I've seriously had better packaged desserts. I had the vodka drink on the cocktail menu, it also wasn't good. Overall I was very disappointed in the food and cocktails. The service was exceptional. Our waiter(s) were attentive and knowledgable. I wouldn't go back.

I made a reservation at Hazel for my birthday dinner with friends. The ambience was great, and the vibe was very cool. I had looked over the menu online and chosen a few possibilities in advance. Unfortunately, my top choice, the Scallop Cakes, was no longer on the menu, so I chose a new dish - the Smoked Eel. The taste and texture of the dish were awful. I was going to plow through and try to eat it all, after declaring to the server that I was an adventurous eater, but I just couldn't do it. Fortunately, the zucchini bread, roasted sun chokes and sticky ribs made up for the distasteful eel. After a swift snatching up of the eel by the waiter, who promptly tossed it (I could see from my seat at the table), I ordered and ate every bit of the Grilled Trout. To Hazel's credit, I looked at the menu yesterday and did not see the eel.

I recently went to Hazel on a date with my partner and it was an absolute treat. The service was exceptional. Our waitress was warm and attentive. She offered some delicious suggestions, like the ribs, which are effing amazing.

The meal was delicious and fit for 2 foodies. We ordered 6 plates between the two of us and had to take some leftovers home. I highly, HIGHLY recommend Grandma Hazel's zucchini bread. Like plz give me the recipe G-ma. A++ for the food.

The atmosphere was romantical and exactly what we were hoping for. The only thing that could be improved was our table location. We dined at Hazel on a Sunday evening when the restaurant was relatively slow, and were seated next to the kitchen. Our location was noisier than the rest of the restaurant and unfortunately impacted conversation. We were seated very closely to another party of 4, when there were plenty of other open tables.

Otherwise, Hazel is a must visit for my 202 peeps.

A great meal, with casual, highly professional service. The menu doesn't instantly reveal the creativity and care that goes into these dishes. For example, kale with sunchokes and smoked tofu sauce? Doesn't sound anywhere near as delicious and interesting as it was. Don't go with the food fearful, rather the food adventurous and talk with the knowledgeable staff. Great cocktails and lovely cava by the glass.

Food is very good. Service was good except the way they coursed our dinner. I ordered in the logical order of how it should be courses but dishes were served randomly. Example: a spicy duck dish before a raw fish course; killed the subtlety of the fish dish.

Hazel has a limited and eclectic menu. I am assuming it changes frequently to provide incentives to return. We ordered cocktails that arrived along with our first course, described as a chicken dish but really zucchini, with rich and interesting spices. Next came the smoked barbecued carrots, our favorite, followed by four meaty ribs nicely battered, flavored, and sprinkled with peanuts. We were never asked about wine, the empty plates quickly disappeared. Except for the drinks, the service was seriously efficient.

The seating is typical: booths along one wall, tables lined the other. The bar is separate, and appeared to be a local favorite with groups gathered there when we arrived. When we left, couples filled several outdoor tables, heated with a fire pit or lamp.

If you enjoy unusual flavors and have adventurous taste buds, Hazel definitely will surprise you delight you. Note: the suggestion was to order 2-3 plates /person, but we order 3 total and it was definitely enough for the two of us.

FOOD
If you like duck, you can’t go wrong with the Ducked Up Lazy Susan special, which serves 2. You'll never go back to chicken.

SERVICE
Our server, David G., was out of sync and slow on the draw. He waited 5 minutes to greet us and then wanted to take our dinner order before offering a drink. And he consistently left dirty dishes on the table long after the first and second courses were finished. In fact, he didn’t clear the table until we returned the dessert menu and asked for the check.

TABLE
Avoid the seating area directly behind the host stand. A long, narrow space with six two-top tables, it’s basically the runway between the dining room and the kitchen. We had the misfortune of being seated between two tables with BOOMing voices — not the restaurant’s fault — but combined with the always audible clattering of dishes in the nearby kitchen, the ambience left a lot to be desired.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I may or may not return; the food was good, after all. If I do return, though, I definitely will not accept a table along the runway and I will make sure David G. is not my server.
