Haymaker Bar & Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
My wife & I met dear friends at this vibrant place on West 29th near MSG, a few hours before a concert. There are many types of craft beer, if that's your thing, and a few tempting choices for dinner - nothing fancy but good quality - and the service was friendly & excellent. Our server made suggestions and knew details about the many selections available. The prices were very reasonable for midtown. All in all, we left the Haymaker happy.
Tasty, interesting food. Waitress took a long time to come over but once she did she was friendly and helpful. Its a very nice looking place but my only issue is the noise level. Really really loud. We could barely hear each other and had to shout to have a conversation. I probably won't be back because of that issue.
This spot is definitely not the one to go to if you'd like to catch up with friends for dinner and not have to scream to be heard. It was loud everywhere and the food was mediocre. One of the best beer menus I've seen though - and you could do much worse that close to Penn Station.
I've been wanting to try this place for a while, but finally had the chance this week with a couple of friends. The food and drinks were a lot better than expected. We had bourbon maple mustard wings, mac & cheese, pull pork sliders and the siesta cocktail. Everything was delicious!
It's a cool bar with a fantastic selection of craft beers and a tasty, if limited, menu. I was there on a Saturday afternoon and the atmosphere was open, with plenty of space for those at the bar and tables along the back and sides. It's only a few blocks south of Madison Square Garden, and an ideal place for a meal before an event and beers after.
I've been to Haymaker several times and each time it was good. They have an extensive collection of hard-to-find craft beers. The food is tasty and their mac and cheese is fantastic, but just be prepared to spend a lot for what you get! A good meal with appetizers, several drinks, and desert will run you about $80 to $100 per person easy.... and this is not a fancy restaurant, it's a cross between a gastropub and a craft beer bar. Small and noisy.
Food was great and has a great craft beer selection. When I showed up with my friends, there was no hostess to seat us, and there were more and more people collecting waiting to be seated. Wound up seating around 15-20 minutes after my reservation time. Was crowded due to the pre-Ranger game crowd.
Amazing craft beer menu, excellent Apps - OMG the Bacon wrapped Bacon, fortunately we got the last one, unfortunately we couldn't order a second. The Mess was also very enjoyable, service was great, and Burger main was delicious.
We dined at Haymaker before seeing a show at Madison Square Garden. The food was fantastic and the service was good (it could have been better, but there seemed to be a shortage of waitstaff in our area of the dining room). It got a bit too loud to have a conversation once all of the tables were full, but overall we had a great experience. Try the Pickled Beet Salad! I normally hate beets but had no problem sharing the plate with my husband.
I really want to like this place, but in two times visiting I have had 2 bad experiences. The beer list is varied and constantly updated with lots of cool options, but that is where my positive review ends. On my first trip, the kitchen was closed due to some sort of mechanical issue yet my friend who held the reservation was not notified prior to our arrival. If we had been notified in advance we could have made alternate arrangements for dinner. On my second (and last trip) my dinner order was forgotten (the server said it had been overcooked and was being remade, though I only found this out after flagging down a different waiter) and took almost an hour to finally make it to the table. The meal was also not worth the wait, arriving completely burnt on top and tasting overpoweringly of cumin. The server graciously comped my meal, but this was too little too late in an overall bad dining experience. In a location dying for good dinner and drink options, I really wish this spot was better. Sadly, I will not be back.
The Good-Great Beer selection, very good food, really enjoyed the wings. Server was great despite it being so crowded.
The Bad- So Noisy we could not really talk. The beer menu did a poor job in some cases describing the beers. I don't like sour beers, yet 2 of the beers I ordered turned out to be sour even though there was no indication that they were on the beer list
More Good- The server did take one of the sour beers off the bill when I made a comment
Close to MSG and wanted a decent food place to eat
Menu was limited but all the items we ordered the portions were plentiful and tasty.
Vegetarian person was able to enjoy the mac and cheese with plenty of leftovers.
Service was good and quick. Would certainly recommend and go there again.
Wait staffed delivered someone else's food to our table. We thought it was ours. Ate several fries off the plate. Wait staff came back and asked if we ate off the plate. We told them we had a few fries, they took to correct table, the plates we already ate off of. Too loud for dinner. Beer selection is fabulous. Small menu, which makes the limited menu they have VERY good.
Laid back, hip gastro pub. Amazing beer list and really solid food. I had the burger and wings which were both delicious. Really good find in a neighborhood where there isn't a whole lot going on. We came back after our show at the Garden for late night beers, too.
My friends and I were looking for a place to have dinner and drinks before a show at Madison Square Garden. This was the perfect spot. Good selection of food to please the meat eaters and vegetarians. Great drink selection. Only 2.5 blocks away from MSG. They were forgiving that some of our party didn't arrive on time. And the best part, they were playing a music station inspired by the night's musical guest.
We'll definitely go back before the next show!
Amazing bar with fantastic food. I came here for their fantastic beer list and was more than pleasantly surprised by the quality of their food. Flavors were excellent and I found out from our excellent server (Louise) that they source most of their produce from local farm co operatives. This place is a find in this are of Chelsea and midtown!
I liked the look of the restaurant but overall the service was really slow, from having to wait to check in with the host (he was also waitering, serving, running bar drinks, etc). When we did get seated it took a while to give our order to someone. We were attending a concert at MSG, as were many of the patrons, and we almost had to leave before receiving our dinner. We waited at least 40 min. for our burgers, which were tasty, but couldn't really enjoy them. The waitress kept apologizing and making excuses about the concert. It seems to me, that if the restaurant knows there's an event at MSG, they should have more staff on those nights. Not sure if I'd go back before a show. Or just allow enough time.
