    On Monday, May 19th, the Hav & Mar team will welcome renowned chef and author Alexander Smalls and co-founder of Dine Diaspora and Black Women in Food, Nina Oduro, for a special celebration of their new book, The Contemporary African Kitchen–a vibrant collection of 120 recipes and essays from 33 chefs, cooks, and writers shaping Africa’s food movement. The book features beautifully photographed dishes, personal stories, and cultural insights. From Chicken Yassa to Cocoyam Dumplings, this essential cookbook celebrates the shared ingredients, spices, and traditions of the African continent, offering home cooks an inviting and richly layered culinary journey. To honor those who have contributed to the cookbook, Hav & Mar’s Executive Chef Fariyal Abdullahi has created a special five-course tasting menu inspired by the stories, flavors, and cultural influences shared within its pages. Drawing on her own culinary heritage and the vibrant, globally-inspired approach that defines Hav & Mar, Chef Fariyal will pay tribute to the diverse voices and recipes featured in the book–each course a celebration of identity, creativity, and the power of food to bring people together. About Chef Alexander Smalls Alexander Smalls is a James Beard Award–winning chef, author, and Grammy and Tony–winning opera singer. He was the visionary behind Harlem’s iconic restaurants The Cecil–NYC’s first Afro-Asian-American restaurant, named Esquire’s “Best New Restaurant in America”–and Minton’s, a supper club revival of the legendary BeBop-era jazz haunt. His acclaimed cookbooks include Between Harlem and Heaven and Meals, Music, and Muses, blending Southern Revival cuisine with cultural storytelling. Smalls has appeared on Top Chef, The Chew, Today, and Food Network. A celebrated figure in both culinary and cultural spheres, he continues to explore the African diaspora through food, music, and storytelling. About Nina Oduro Nina Oduro is an entrepreneur, cultural curator, and culinary ambassador dedicated to building a more equitable food system centered on the African diaspora. As CEO and Co-founder of Dine Diaspora, she leads strategy and creative direction through inclusive marketing and events. She is also the co-author of The Contemporary African Kitchen (Oct 2024), with chef Alexander Smalls. Nina co-founded Black Women in Food (BWIF) to advance Black women in the food and hospitality industry, providing global support through funding, networks, and recognition. Her equity-driven work spans three continents and partners including the James Beard Foundation, Facebook, and Microsoft. Named a Changemaker by Washington City Paper and honored as a Top 30 Under 30 by Future of Ghana, Nina’s work has been featured in Food & Wine, Sweet July, and Washingtonian.

    I know for a fact I left a pair of sunglasses in that restaurant. When I went back they very next morning they“ claim “ they didn’t see them. Someone is wearing them as I type this.

    Outstanding! The food was delicious ,wonderful flavours. It felt such a privilege to taste and enjoy such food! The Curry Goat Gyoza and Addis York was special! This is now my favourite restaurant, shame I live in the UK! But truly thankful for the experience. The front of house team were also incredible they were professional, knowledgeable and worked seamlessly as a team. Made me smile. Really great to see. Visiting NY or a local go to Hav and Mar and experience exceptional food. Flavours I’ve never tasted in this way and just superb.

    I read other reviews about this restaurant and decided to give it a try with two friends. We had a wonderful experience! The ambience, along with the music and surrounding neighborhood, sets the stage for a fantastic dinner. The menu is a beautiful blend of different cuisines. The flavors come together perfectly. The blue cornbread was perfectly sweetened and went really well with our cocktails. Also tried the fluke ceviche! The best I’ve ever had Bronzino was a very large portion, served with four very interesting and flavorful additions, including kimchi And do not miss the artichoke and Brussel salad. I’m going to try to recreate that one in my own kitchen! We had no room for a dessert, but there were several including a white and dark chocolate combo cake, that sound scrumptious Enjoy!

    Hav & Mar, featuring Swedish-Ethiopian cuisine, is a NY Times Best 100 Restaurants member, and after having the pleasure to dine there on April 19, 2025, we agree. First, the ambience is stunning. From the woodwork to the paintings of black mermaids decorating the walls, a beautiful space. We were led to a nice window-side table for two, and then our culinary adventure began. We started with the Hav Bread Basket, an outrageously delicious assortment of blue cornbread, muffins, pita triangles, and crisps accompanied by honey butter, peach chutney, and tomato hummus dips. Scrumptious! Our mains - pan-seared bass with purple yams and spring vegetables and a half roasted chicken with salad - were amazingly flavorful. And a side of fries was delicious. Finally, we capped this great meal with an excellent chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream. Helen G. provided superlative service throughout…friendly, informative, and accommodating! In sum, this innovative restaurant deserves every plaudit it has received and more! So run, don’t walk, to this place of you get the chance! A must-visit spot in NYC!

    Hav & Mar is just a pleasant dining experience - delicious, well prepared food, sincerely welcoming and attentive staff, spacious but not cavernous interior. The food is a flavorful mix of Ethiopian cooking strategies and a cosmopolitan palette. The bread basket wins you over immediately. This is my third time visiting and third time having a wonderful evening.

    Was excited about this place. Drinks started off delicious. Bread basket okay. Artichoke salad good. Goat gyoza didn’t seem to actually have any meat and it wasn’t curried or spicy. The mushroom curry was bland and okay but not great. Our waitress was not good. Very sweet but not very experienced. Won’t return. We did not eat one mushroom curry that was brought to another table by mistake and we were given a seafood dish. It was taken away after several minutes and given to the neighboring table. The next day we received a phone call from the management and they credited us for the mushroom curry, which was nice of them.
