Probably the oldest hostelry in Salisbury and certainly the most haunted - The Haunch of Venison provides refreshment in the historic downstairs bar and in the unique restaurant upstairs. The enormous oak beams, which can be seen throughout, pre-date the building by several hundred years and are thought to come from early sailing vessels. The Haunch of Venison is a «must see» place in Salisbury, listed on CAMRA's National Inventory for its historic interior and recommended by the Good Pub Guide for 28 years, has TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for three years, published in many guide books and other tourist publications. Also it proudly stands in a list of «25 Pubs in the UK you must drink in before you die». There is a tremendous heritage here, spanning back nearly 700 years – we would love you to be part of the future.

I was returning after 77 years. This week's menus was probably much superior to that of wartime rationing, but I can't remember what I ate, either then, or now.

Very good food at very reasonable prices. Walked past it so many times and never ate. Big mistake now rectified.

The soup starter was massively oversalted. They were happy to replace it with another bowl that was only mildly over-salted. The venison shepherd's pie was average. The service was excellent and the venue remarkable, maybe we chose badly.

Quirky, historic pub with a good atmosphere and friendly staff. The venison casserole was delicious although the dumpling was very hard! I didn't have the heart to complain because the staff were so lovely.

Visited this ancient Pub built in 1320. Steeped in history . Food was very good. We were superbly looked after by Zack, a young film school student who knew how to cope with our wishes and keep us amused as well as fed. Highly recommend. Sadly we missed seeing the severed hand in the wall !

Fantastic historical pub. Small dining area upstairs, beautiful beams, open fire and brilliantly uneven floors. All this as the pub is nearly 700 years old. Full of old English charm, serving nice food. Venison stew was fantastic. A must for any tourist visiting Salisbury. Make sure you book. When we were there (Feb 2017) people were being turned away having not done so.

We went to celebrate my sons birthdays but knowing that there was nothing special done. My husband and I ordered roasts which were delicious but one of sons ordered a burger which in fairness they accommodated because it wasn't on the menu but nevertheless was well charred and dry. We all had sticky toffee pudding which just had ice cream and no sauce was ok but nothing special. Service was good. I also ordered an apple juice which was very weak in flavour either cheap juice or it was watered down, disappointing. Probably won't go back to eat but atmosphere great for a drink.

This is a fab little place, with loads of historic character , the food is homemade and wholesome , would visit again if and when in Salisbury .
