We made a reservation and had dinner at Hau Tree and went back for lunch the next day. The setting is super casual right on the beach. We walked up the hill after dinner and saw the manta rays eating in the light they shine down into the water. Food was great. My daughter didn’t like her grilled cheese and the manager quickly got her a replacement. Beautiful spot to watch the sun set. It was our first visit to the Mauna Loa beach, which is gorgeous with soft white sand. Food is Hawaii resort expensive, but everything tasted great. I had a Ceasar salad with grilled ono and it was delicious. For lunch, you seat yourself, so it took some time to get a table cleared off so we could sit down-but multiple people helped out to help us get settled in. Pina colada is $16, but again, really tasty. Highly recommend Hau Tree for a casual lunch or dinner in one of the most beautiful settings in the area. Parking is free for dinner. $20 for lunch but you can use the beach afterwards, so worth it in my book.

We stopped by for dinner while on vacation- very casual right on the beach. Amazing sunset view! Food was excellent- we had Poke bowl, garlic shrimp, a cheeseburger and a shrimp Caesar salad- all were excellent. Our server, Keikilani was very sweet, had a great sense of humor and was very professional. Overall a great evening...oh and try their brownie sundae! We liked it better than the Lilikoi meringue tart... but it was a close vote!

I recommend the Hau Tree for sunset ambiance and for a drink or dessert. The quality of our dinners was poor, however - uninspired dishes, with plain white rice accompanying, and way overpriced. Even the burger sounded boring....

The beautiful scenery helped reduce the disappointment of the mediocre food. The burger was not cooked as asked, the flavor was similar to a fast food joint but at a much higher cost. Not recommended.

Enjoyed dinner on the beach. We ate here several times for lunch, but this is first for dinner in the sunset. Service was excellent, the drinks enjoyable. The food we had was really good.

Very good overall experience. It was a set menu for Valentine’s Day, and everything was very nicely done.

The fish tacos were awful. Bland, uninteresting.
All three of us that ordered them were very disappointed.
Hamburgers were good.
Service was wonderful!
Convenient after Manta Ray snorkel

Brought our large group here for a sunset dinner a few days ago. It is a beautiful spot with casual food and great tropical drinks that spills over onto a beautiful sandy beach. It is a tropical meal at its best.

Great food in an open air setting watching the sunset and a near full moonrise. Nearby saw a manta ray in the lights turned on by the hotel Mauna Kea.

Amazing location with a great view with great service and delicious food. Very casual atmosphere and quiet. We had our 6 month old son and everyone interacted with him and didn’t mind him being there. It was our anniversary so they sang us a song and gave us a dessert. I will go back next time I’m here!

This place is all about the location and view. The drink menu is larger than the dinner menu. Drinks were very expensive and not that great. $42 ribeye was actually a New York strip. Fish tacos and super salad were very good. Wouldn’t eat here again, but would definitely come back for sunset.

This is a delightful setting right on the beach at the Mauna Kea. Perfect for sunset! The menu is small, but the food is delicious. They accommodate children and families. We loved their Catch of the Day!
