Saturday - Clambake Seasonal. The amazing Clambake seafood buffet offers all-you-can-eat Keahole Maine Lobster, sashimi, shrimp, crab claws, oysters, mussels and clams. There's also prime rib, salads, grilled fish, and a decadent dessert spread.
The setting and atmosphere were great but the food was just ok.
Good food, beautiful beachfront venue. Prices really not bad for high end resort.
Can’t beat the setting, beachfront.
Great view and very casual. Only one trouble is that the Maunu Kea Hotel is a resort and there is NO open parking. I played golf there and could park at the course while I played but after the golf I had to find a new parking place. The ONLY choice is Valet Parking and the $40.00 price tag that goes with it. Both the Copper Bar and the Hau Tree are very nice. Food was not great or very bad, I expected a lot more for the costs which on par with the other resorts. I received one Mojito with no rum and had to call the waiter. If you go here , go for the sunset. One of the best one the Big Island. I would go again for drinks and the sunset but not for $40.00 parking.
Location was great. Food was ok. The service was poor. We were seated and waited over 15!min for water, another 10 min for order to be taken. The food was expensive for what you get.
Poor service spoiled a reasonably fine meal. I guess getting consistent, pleasant, efficient employees is getting even more difficult in Hawaii.
Amazing sunset! We've traveled a bit, have seen a lot of sunsets, but this location takes the cake. Reserve a table to get the best view.
Definitely NOT handicap accessible.
The menu on Open Table bears no resemblance to the actual menu! The real menu is very limited with mediocre food. This is simply a beach bar. Maybe okay for lunch on the beach but not dinner. Don't waste time at happy hour unless all you want is a beer on the beach. Worst Man Tai ever!!!!!!
The food was delicious, and it was wonderful to be eating right on the beach at sunset! The service was great and the overall experience was perfect!
Overpriced, great location and service, weak drinks and so-so food, wouldn’t return
Amazing view, great food and service
Must go to this restaurant
View is beautiful. Very loud but fine for a beach restaurant.
Fryer not working and could not get fries with our meals.
Service was okay. ‘Members’ checked in ahead of us and had the same waitress as us. They were definitely given priority over us.
Skip this restaurant and go upstairs to Copper Bar instead.
Food was overpriced, they did not have the fryer working for french fries or tortilla chips and the service was lacking. My wine was not chilled either. Sunset was beautiful.
A lovely setting for dinner, excellent service (thank you Ireland!), fresh delicious fish, and rich generous desserts. A perfect sunset dinner!
The location is the best thing about Hau Tree. Otherwise, it's very average in all ways. The food is only so/so and is overpriced. The ambience/decor is almost non-existent. The service was the best thing about Hau Tree other than being on the beach/location. Just a very average experience. It would be so EASY to make the restaurant more inviting with the design elements and it should be quite easy to improve the food, as the food is quite basic. I would neither recommend it nor NOT recommend it. It was non memorable in any way sadly.
Everything we ordered was outstanding from the poke with taro chips, hummus with crudités, rib eye, fish tacos, tonkatsu, to dessert. The servers were attentive and friendly. We all enjoyed our meals and left very satisfied. The sunset view was priceless. Excellent experience!
Great location, however, the food was very disappointing.
Excellent food and service with an impeccable view of the ocean. This is truly a great place to sip on some champagne and watch the sun go down over the ocean under the beautiful haute trees. The food was very tasty in particular the seafood trio main plate Caesar salad and mushroom with toast points for an appetizer.
Family vacation and had dinner on the beach at sunset. Excellent location, more of a beach restaurant vibe, nothing fancy. Live music playing as the sun sets behind the extremely friendly service. Will go again.
We enjoyed a pleasant and relaxing early dinner at Hau Tree. The restaurant has an ideal location with great views of the bay. The menu choices were good; we opted for salad with chicken or shrimp skewer. Quality of food and service both excellent. We were very pleased with our dining experience.
Great place to watch the sunset and enjoy a good casual dinner. We had great service!
This little spot sits directly on the beach, so a dinner near the end of the day affords a fantastic sunset experience. Food was delicious, fish was fresh, and the cocktails were excellent, especially the Fredrico.
The only downside was some persistent and annoying bugs, and one little boy hurling sand on the beach who was a little too close for comfort. Otherwise, a very pleasant experience.
Only redeeming quality is the location! The fish tacos were like cardboard and extremely bland. Salad was OK. Kids meals were overdone.
Sunset dining with the family on vacation!
Helpful wait staff! Gorgeous sunset.
We celebrated an anniversary there with our family. It was the perfect place for our grandchild-as she could play well with our children on the beach, the dinner entrees were as expected and the drinks were too, except for the dingy wine glasses.
We took our friends to the Hau Tree as it was their first time in Hawaii. We ordered drinks and we can recommend the maitai and the mangotini, as well as the blue Hawaii. All were delicious. Then we ordered the sashimi and the seafood platter, all very well presented and delicious. I had the kampachi, one of us the mahimahi, another had the chicken and the fourth ordered the opakapaka. All were fantastic. Mine had a mango salsa which I loved. Then for dessert we ordered the apple tart and the berry tart, not quite enough for four of us to share. Roger was our waiter and he was wonderful. We were seated by the rail and watched the sun go down. Since it was April, it was not too hot, although we did have some direct sun until sunset. Great for people watching on the beach!!
The service is very good here. Fish dinner was good. Ordered Hamburger cooked medium, was presented to table very rare. Took a very long time to get fixed and returned to table. The fish dinner got cold waiting for re-cooked burger. You should know how to cook a burger.
Go for the view. Stick with beer.
Go for everything else but the food. Sunset, drinks and manta rays. Online menu is out of date.
Great beach-side location on the world famous Mauna Kea beach with a nice selection of well-prepared food at reasonable prices. The service was very good, as was the live entertainment. Visited twice in one week despite being residents at a different resort - highly recommended for lunch or dinner.
We made a reservation and had dinner at Hau Tree and went back for lunch the next day. The setting is super casual right on the beach. We walked up the hill after dinner and saw the manta rays eating in the light they shine down into the water. Food was great. My daughter didn’t like her grilled cheese and the manager quickly got her a replacement. Beautiful spot to watch the sun set. It was our first visit to the Mauna Loa beach, which is gorgeous with soft white sand. Food is Hawaii resort expensive, but everything tasted great. I had a Ceasar salad with grilled ono and it was delicious. For lunch, you seat yourself, so it took some time to get a table cleared off so we could sit down-but multiple people helped out to help us get settled in. Pina colada is $16, but again, really tasty. Highly recommend Hau Tree for a casual lunch or dinner in one of the most beautiful settings in the area. Parking is free for dinner. $20 for lunch but you can use the beach afterwards, so worth it in my book.
We stopped by for dinner while on vacation- very casual right on the beach. Amazing sunset view! Food was excellent- we had Poke bowl, garlic shrimp, a cheeseburger and a shrimp Caesar salad- all were excellent. Our server, Keikilani was very sweet, had a great sense of humor and was very professional. Overall a great evening...oh and try their brownie sundae! We liked it better than the Lilikoi meringue tart... but it was a close vote!
I recommend the Hau Tree for sunset ambiance and for a drink or dessert. The quality of our dinners was poor, however - uninspired dishes, with plain white rice accompanying, and way overpriced. Even the burger sounded boring....
For the price food was well below average.
One of my favorite places on the island. Best Mai Tais on the island! Beautiful setting and good food:)
The beautiful scenery helped reduce the disappointment of the mediocre food. The burger was not cooked as asked, the flavor was similar to a fast food joint but at a much higher cost. Not recommended.
Great view, good friends and we went over to see the manta rays after eating. Very enjoyable.
Enjoyed dinner on the beach. We ate here several times for lunch, but this is first for dinner in the sunset. Service was excellent, the drinks enjoyable. The food we had was really good.
