Ha's Chinese Ratings and Reviews
Great happy hour specials - $6 for a Your Way Mule with bourbon. The Gruyere Grilled Cheese was delicious (and I typically don't even like gruyere so that is really saying something). The service was great and the place has a really chill atmosphere. I wish I had been able to stay for the live music, but maybe next time!
I have loved this place since 2013, I met my future In-Laws there, celebrated throng 24 AND 25, and had a surprise leaving NYC party for my best friend.
BUT I have noticed a change in their service as well as menu. The menu should stay fresh and change, I have no qualms with that, but the servers have changed the place completely.
Their service used to be laid back and confident, I would spend hours there with a cup of coffee and pastry, to tip 200% to the servers who let me be and allowed me space; also the late night sessions were inviting and they welcome groups of new comers and I've made friends with old staff members, Bianca, Kasey, Clint.
Over the last 6 months to a year, I've experienced unsatisfactory service there. Usually I will go in for a weekday brunch or the late night happy hour twice a month. My last 4/6 visits, I was waited on by a skinnier brunette young girl working the closing shift. She has consistently "forgot" the happy hour menus(when we discussed our reason for being there was happy hour) and she routinely flashes by the table to make sure you don't complain too much. Not to harp on her specifically, but her service has led me to find another's place to bring friends, a few times so far this year.
In short, this neighborhood hot spot has started to change to conventions rather than conviction. They used to make stellar coffee and vegetables, and allowed you to meet your future in laws there... but now, I'm feeling like an inconvenience by some of the serving staff and it continues to persist. I love this restraurant and hope to see some changes eventually.
Service was horrible. We sat down for brunch and we were rushed to place our orders. We placed food and drink order at the same time (2 bloody Mary's and 2 brunch items) the food came out way too quickly & was cold. My mac and cheese tasted as if it has been sitting there for a while. Our drinks arrived half way through eating our meal. I was excited to come here from all the reviews I'd seen- don't think I'll be coming back.
This place is a must for a trip to NYC. Easy access to the subway -- no excuses for not going! The staff is warm, friendly, and knowledgeable. The food was among the best we had during our week-long trip. Delicious, creative combinations of flavors. The cocktails are amazing, too.
Awesome comfort food with a straightforward wine, beer and cocktail list. Service was a bit lacking and it took awhile for someone to realize I had even arrived, then a 2nd glass of wine took nearly 20 minutes to be delivered. Interestingly enough, it was an empty Thursday evening and despite it being fairly empty, service left much to be desired for. Regardless, I'd come back again for food and probably just sit at the bar to make things feel a lot less inconvenient.
I loved the vibe of this place. It was dark (but not too dark) and cozy. Since we had a party of 8 people, we were at the front table by the door. This was perfect and gave us plenty of space. As well, venturing towards the back, there is a nice bar section and back seating that would make for a romantic date setting. The selection of beer and cocktails was amazing- the Frose and Winter Punch were my two favorites. The food itself was super tasty and comforting. The crispy brussel sprouts, potato cake, and mac and cheese were the perfect starters. They were portioned perfectly to share with the table and so very flavorful. We all also loved our main courses of grilled cheeses. You definitely cannot go wrong with a fancy grilled cheese for a marvelous birthday celebration. To top it off, the wait staff was super friendly and accommodating! All around, I would highly recommend this place for a dinner.
I've been here a few times and plan to keep coming back. Love the atmosphere and decor ! Mac & cheese came looking like a loaf made with pesto. Wasn't our favorite but the classic grilled cheese is worth it!
Also been here for brunch and I love the jalapeño bloody Mary's.
Terrible experience. Waited 30 minutes for an ice coffee and cappuccino until I had to go up the hostess to ask about our drinks- then she went ahead and put another order in .. Still charged us. We waited an hour for a breakfast burrito and two Sunnyside eggs w/ veggie hash - the eggs were cold. They said it was because the kitchen was busy, but the place wasn't even half full. Very disappointed. I paid with an opentable egiftcard so had to give my phone to the waitress... Ten minutes passed and I saw her casually chatting so I went up to make sure everything was okay, the "manager" was supposed to be inputting the codes for thE gift card but was texting on her own cell phone and laughing with her coworkers. I proceeded to stand there for another 5-10 minutes to finish paying. It was so unprofessional, unorganized, extremely poor service and very over priced for the experience.
Went for brunch with my best friend. The space looks like a renovated loft, with a very "hipster" vibe (exposed pipes, edison light bulbs etc). Our waitress was very nice and accommodating as was the person who kept our water filled. The other waitress came over and repeatedly removed things from our table without asking, including my napkin which she first used to wipe down the table. She had a pretty sour attitude to boot.
I had the gouda grilled cheese, which I would eat every day if I could! Cheesy, spicy, sweet, and the perfect crunch on the brioche. My friend had the potato cake, which she liked but said she wish there was something acidic on top, like tomatoes because it was very very dense. She also had a shandy type drink we was too lemony for her taste. Overall, we would definitely go back.
I met a friend here for dinner. we shared the mac' n cheese which was delicious (super cheesy, toasted on top, good cornbread), however I was disappointed with the gruyere grilled cheese that I ordered (the bread was very hard and the cheese was kind of cold). since the place is popular for grilled cheese, I expected more but would be willing to give it another try. I liked the ambiance and the service was good.
My husband and I have been there a few times and always really enjoyed their food, but our last visit there was disappointing. The main entrees just didn't work. I had risotto, and it was just a big bowl of farro with nothing else in it. My husband had a strange Japanese inspired dish that was something like a quesadilla. Neither were presented very nicely, just kind of slopped on the plates. I would definitely give them one more chance, though, in the past its been so good. I would play it safe and get a grill cheese.
We've been to this restaurant before and we never come away disappointed. The cold corn soup was fabulous and so was the macaroni and cheese. I was a little disappointed with the risotto this time around, though on other visits it was wonderful. I had the berry cobbler (with a candle in it) and my husband had the chocolate pudding for dessert, and they were first-rate. The waitress--who was very sweet--consulted with the bartender to help us find the best bottle of cider for our tastes. Overall, it was a fine evening.
We enjoyed an absolutely delicious and creative grilled cheese sandwich, their specialty. The cold pressed coffee and other morning beverages were very good as well. Somehow they lost our small order and it took 45 minutes for our food to arrive. Without our asking, our waiter was very apologetic and removed the coffees from our bill to compensate us for the wait. The room is charmingly appointed with tin ceilings, interesting light fixtures, vintage wall and floor finishes holding both large communal tables with comfortable benches, as well as several tables for smaller parties. We wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant if you find yourself in Astoria Queens!
My husband and I do not eat meat on Tuesdays so we decided to treat ourselves to the Queens kickshaw. I had the cheedar and gruyere on brioche and tomato gazpacho which was heavenly. My husband had the gouda and I had to steal a bite because of his first bite reaction! It was unbelievably good! We shared a Mac a cheese which was almost a meal by itself accompanied by perfectly prepared asparagus and cornbread. The staff and service were great and she allowed us to sit anywhere. We enjoyed it and will definitely come back!
The brunch menu was a bit limited, but the waitstaff helped us to find some extra goodies for the table. The beer selection was excellent, and I'm told the cocktails were good as well. Overall, the food was good, I'll have to go back and try the full, non-brunch menu.
