About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Fancy
On May 13, 1931, Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry's Bar in Venice. Over the years, Harry's Bar has become the place where writers, painters, artists, aristocrats, kings, and queens would meet. Among them were: Barbara Hutton, Katherine Hepburn, Gary Cooper, Giancarlo Menotti, Peggy Guggenheim, Orson Welles, Frank Lloyd Wright, Joe DiMaggio, Truman Capote, and Ernest Hemingway. The keys to the success of this small bar were: service, freedom, and lack of imposition.

Throughout its 93-year history, Harry's Bar has witnessed the 20th century in Venice. Its importance was also recognized by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, which declared it a national reference point in 2001. No other public place in Italy had received the same award in the same century.

Tips for travellers, don’t make a reservation. You can walk in to try the Bellini or get a great cocktail during the aperitivo (after the formal lunch service).

Food was excellent. The "Nizzarda" salad was underdressed, but the veal scallopini, sole in butter and capers were both fantastic. The prices were quite high for what was on offer, having been to other Cipriani restaurants before I expect higher prices but this seemed a bit off...18 euros for a side of fries (albeit, excellent) is a bit much. Also just one rosé wine on the menu for 90 euros, again a good bottle but really not much of a choice. Service was good, they accommodated needs of two older ladies. Though the bartender wouldn't make a spritz when requested by one.

This restaurant is clearly trading on its name. The service was dire - despite having plenty of staff it was difficult to get service and everything was so slow. We ordered a bottle of wine and this didn’t arrive until our main courses were finished. There was one member of staff who just stood at the serving station doing nothing to help the others running around and he blocked the exit. The food was ok but there are much much better options. The upstairs area lacked any ambiance. A very disappointing experience

I had a lovely meal here here 10 years ago. Not this time! Our 2025 visit demonstrate that this establishment has lost its way. The service was professional (Valentino was excellent) but the ambiance, especially the lighting was so neglected ( they are a listed property but it gets no attention) it was obvious this place is being run for maximum profit….and is just a tourist trap…. The wine was great, BUT the food was so bad we did not eat our main course. Sauces were terrible, portion size enormous and the pasta was tasteless.

Bottled Bellini poured into a glass for €22 – not fresh, arrived 50 minutes after food, and tasted like Fanta Exotic. They still had the audacity to charge for it. They also impose a €10 per person cover charge (coperto). Outrageous. The food? Disappointing. I had pasta with saffron and bacon for over €50 – bland, forgettable. Also ordered a chicken salad for €50, completely ruined by excessive sauce/mayo. Service was robotic and clearly aimed at turning tables fast. You’re subtly rushed from the moment you sit down. This place isn’t about tradition anymore. Capitalism has gutted a once historic bar, turning it into a tourist trap with sky-high prices and mid food. All in all, a terrible experience. Avoid

Highly disappointing. Have been to other Cipriannis + this was not on par The place was run down Overpriced for food offered room has not been renovated + even the famous peach Bellini had poor presentation in a beer glass and no real peach essence. Gave up opportunity to go to truly excellent restaurants and sadly others roll also.
