We both are lactose intlerant and they were most accommodating, checking ingredients and omitting butter from the cooking process. Would go again.
Great food, nice atmosphere! Personable staff. Would go again for shrimp and grits.
We had some out of town guests and took them to Hank's due to the quality and variety of the seafood. It did not disappoint. Food was great and the service was very attentive
The only negative is that it is very noisy.
Amazing place. Wonderful food, terrific service, vibrant atmosphere! Loved everything about Hank's and can't wait to come back. A must when visiting Charleston!
Great- start to finish
My sister-in-law was visiting from VA/France. I decided we should go to Hanks for her last night here in town. We both were not disappointed in my choice.
We each had an appetizer that was shared. The selection of seafood entrees was wonderful as well as the choices of wine and other alcoholic beverages.
Upon finishing each course our table was cleared in a timely manner. We were never rushed.
Dessert was suggested along with coffee. My sister-in-law enjoyed the fruit and sorbet. Our server brought us each a spoon so that it could be shared.
It was a fabulous last night in town for my sister-in-law.
The food was fantastic, and atmosphere amazing. The only draw back was the noise level.
A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Hanks stating soft shell crabs are now in season and availabe at Hanks. It was very disappointing when I was told they didn’t have them that day. My reason for going to Hanks ended up a dissapointment.
Food, drinks, and service were all excellent! We really enjoyed our date night and will try to return if we’re ever in Charleston again!
Great food, great service. Very nice restaurant but still works for families.
We had a big party. They split us up which was very disappointing.
The casino oysters were fantastic! Service was excellent. We liked that there were options for those who preferred old fashioned fried seafood platters as well as more trendy "foodie" presentations. The colonial daiquiri is one of the best drinks I've ever had. It is definitely on the expensive side, but worth it for a memorable meal.
Wonderful, amazing dining experience. Nicely varied menu and the Wondo and Maine Lobsters was cooked to perfection. Cappucino and pecan pie - both the best that I have ever tasted. Service by Ben was attentive and spot on. Very special restaurant, a very special dinner and a rare treat.
My grouper was overcooked to the point of being rubbery. The risotto was just not that good. I can say that the wait staff and management were very nice and replaced the fish with apologies and further checking to make sure we were satisfied. My husband got the same dish but his fish was cooked properly and was decent tasting. It is never fun to sit and watch your dinner companion eat while you wait for a new dish and then eat yours while they wait and watch you eat.
My overall opinion was the dinner was fine. My husband had dined here for a business dinner and felt the service and food was outstanding so when family was in town I thought it would be a good place to take them. However, there were a few areas that could be improved upon. First. we arrived to the restaurant early,4:40 for a 5:00 pm reservation, and were told we had to wait at least 10 minutes before being seated. This would have been perfectly acceptable if the staff wasn't letting other people in to sit at the bar. I thought well if they aren't open I understand, but that didn't appear to be the case. Also, when we were seated and ready to order our drinks our server wouldn't take the order until she came back with water first. After she filled our glasses we told her again we would like to order our drinks and she said she would be back in a few minutes to get the drink order. Really? How many times do we have to ask to have our drink order taken. The rest of the evening went pretty smooth, service was adequate, most of the food was good. One of our guest said her fish was slightly overcooked and no she didn't say anything. My dinner was fine, I ordered chicken because I don't like seafood. I don't expect a lot when I am at a seafood place and don't order seafood, but for the prices you could kick you non-seafood dishes up a notch. I hate to pay that much for a dinner and feel like I could have made it at home. Since my husband's first experience was so above average and this experience was fine I would certainly give the restaurant another try, but was a little disappointed in this experience.
Enjoyed the buzz of this vibrant restaurant. Ordered the soft shell crabs which were fried. It was very rich and I was unable to finish the dish. The crab cake we had as an appetizer was delicious! I heard the clam chowder was very good, but did not try the soup. The seafood looked very good, I just chose the wrong dish. Would recommend giving this restaurant a try.
Incredible seafood, she crab soup and shrimp n grits where epic and amazing flavors.
Outstanding cocktail menu and desserts!
Food was fantastic! We started with the tower which had raw oysters, mussels, 2 kinds of shrimp and lobster. A tower of deliciousness. One one of us had the soft shell crab which was perfectly crispy. Another had the shrimp and grits which were the best she ever had. I had the seafood Wando which was full of seafood with a nice creamy sauce. Our waiter was very nice. Not pushy at all. Very nice experience.
Love Hanks, it never disappoints! Has an old fashion Southern Seafood ambiance. Can’t beat the location.
Delicious meal from start to finish. The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. The smoked salmon appetizer was wonderful.
Great food and service. Very nice for evening dining without being too formal.
Always reliable. Great seafood and a very professional level of service.
My wife and I were there for our anniversary. She had flounder and I had grouper, both of which were very good. The accompaniment with my was very rich, but also delicious. We also had ceviche as an appetizer which we enjoyed. Our server was both professional and helpful. We would definitely go back.
The shrimp had a bad taste, sort of petroleum like. We sent them back and they did not think there was anything wrong, but there clearly was. The crab soup was grossly over salted. Also the crust on top of the
roasted grouper was too salty.
Awesome food, service & met expectations; however, noise level was high & made conversation difficult.
This was our introduction to southern preparations of seafood. The shrimp and grits were a hit with both me and my partner. The local shrimp were the best for freshness and excellent preperation. This is as loud active place, but well worth the noise for the excellent food.
Enjoyed the meal immensely and chatted with our fellow diners amiably while experiencing superior service.
Just So-So. The rave reviews on this site led us to expect a great meal. Unfortunately, we were really disappointed by the food. I generally don't write negative reviews but I want to caution people about this so you have realistic expectations or decide to dine elsewhere. We had the southern seafood platter #1, which was incredibly bland and dry. You might get better food than this at a chain or frozen food meal in the supermarket. We also got the Seafood a la Wanda, which I thought was somewhat better, though my wife didn't like it. The "bread" was practically uncooked cold dough, served with rock hard butter. The ambiance and service were good, but that didn't make up for the truly disappointing food.
First time visit to this winner of best seafood restaurant for 16 years. Perhaps their recognition by local diners raised our expectations too high. The dining room is classic looking and the waiters are all impeccably dressed. All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and efficient. But the food was just okay. The She Crab soup had way too much lemon flavor and was not very good. The Shrimp and Grits were in a tomato base which was different but not sure if better than the traditional cream base. Overall, this was a very expensive but disappointing dining experience.
Unfortunately Hanks seems to have devolved into a tourist spot in Charleston - of course, Charleston is full of tourists and we were two of them. However, we found the food to be less than we expected from a visit several years ago. Overcooked fish is nothing to be proud of. The best thing about our meal was the pureed potato side dish. Service was fine - our waiter was pleasant and did not hover. But we did feel a bit rushed even though we said we were in no hurry. In our opinion there are many better restaurants in Charleston than Hanks.
Hank's is a must go to every time I am in Charleston, food is fantastic, service is excellent. You just can't beat Hank's.
Loved Hank's and it's a "must go" if you visit Charleston!
Sunday dinner at Hanks for 4. Hadn't been here in years - and they have been around for a loooong time. The place was quite busy when we arrived but we managed to get a place at the full bar to have a drink while we waited for the rest of our party. Lots of large groups and a "touristy" feel. Sat in a nice big booth. Very good server - quick and knowledgeable. The menu is large and has lots of options for fresh local seafood. We tried the gamut - from tuna tartar (very good) to ceviche (a tad rare, but still nice), crab cocktail was very good and the special salad with shrimp (too much greens and not enough of anything else). Entrees came out fast and proved decent. The special soft shell crabs were great, the fried seafood platter had a nice light breading, the grouper with goat cheese risotto was too much - the fish lovely but the goat cheese and balsamic sauce was overwhelming - think gravy. Overall we were very impressed with Hanks as we had avoided it before as touristy (which it is - but they manage to keep it local and fresh). I will return.
The food was outstanding, the service attentive and friendly. A great place for a special occasion and seafood presented at its best. Reservations a must. I keep coming back!
Great service and atmosphere. Delicious food.
Wonderful service and food! Annual trip and Hank’s never disappoints! Thank you!
Great night, great food, great service - we hand friends and family with us for their first visit - Hanks did not disappoint
Service was great and food was as wonderful. Looking forward to going back again. Martha. Marshall
There were 6 of us including 2 small children at 5:30 and couldn't have been treated better!
Sometimes in a nicer restaurant we would be hesitant to include small 'crumb smashers' but no negativity whatsoever. Food was outstanding....nothing but great quality seafood and service.
Our daughter's anniversary and bridge run weekend....Wonderful time!
