We visit Hank's about once a year. It is remarkable that they remain at the top in their field for over 18 years that I can recall. The bouillabaisse is not to be missed. Seafood tower as well. I recommend Hank's to all first-time Charleston visitors.
We were a few minutes early for our reservation but there was room at the bar so we enjoyed a well-made cocktail while we waited. The hostess found us when our table was ready. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and food preparation. The food is the star of the show. The shrimp and grits was the best I've ever had and another in my party said the same about the bouillabaisse. We highly recommend dining at Hank's!
Food was expertly prepared and flavorful. We had the rare tuna appetizer with fried green tomatoes and the tuna tartare appetizer, along with a special salad. The two appetizers were perfect. The salad was unremarkable and had too much cheese. The cheese flavor, while not unappetizing, overwhelmed every other taste in the salad.
Our waiter was good but wasn't particularly helpful. He also didn't pay attention to our answers to his questions. Upon an initial inquiry, both of us said we were from Charleston. A few minutes later, when he came back to the table, he asked us what brought us to Charleston. Not a big deal but if you're going to engage me in small talk and ask me questions, pay attention to what I tell you.
For such a full room, the noise level was more than acceptable. We didn't even really notice others around us and were able to engage in pleasant, private conversation. Will make a return visit I'm sure as soon as we work our way through the rest of the great restaurants in Charleston.
Our waiter, Ben gets 5 stars for his outstanding personal service and knowledge of the wine list and food. Try the crab cakes because they are amazing! Hands Down- Hank's Seafood is the best seafood restaurant in the Historic Charleston District.
Great atmosphere, food and service. We especially enjoyed the booth seating, the waiter was very knowledgeable and made it a pleasurable dining experience. Very convenient downtown location within walking distance of many hotels. Will definitely return.
We ate our way across Charleston over a 4 day period, Hanks was in the top restaurants. Staff was very friendly, knew the food and wine pairings well. Noise level was low enough we could carry on a conversation without raising our voices.
She Soup was best we had of 4 different locations. This stuff is good crack. Seated Tuna was cooked to perfection by barely being cooked. Good sear cool center. I had the daily special and again fish was cooked perfectly. Not over done. We did not have deserts as we were stuffed. Food portions were generous
Highly recommend eating here
Meal was very good. Very noisy. Unable to have much of a conversation. Pace was rushed.
Once again we loved our dinner at Hanks. Seated shortly after our reservation time, long enough to get a drink at the bar and say our hellos. The seafood tower was fabulous (surely better than Hall's which is very good) and all of our dinners were cooked to perfection. Favorite seafood p-lace in Charleston.
My sister and I had dinner here after hearing such great reviews. Wonderful service from Casey! The food was delicious. My sister had a combo with grouper and shrimp and I had the fried chicken. Highly recommend Hank’s!
outstanding. had the swordfish with spinach and goat cheese risotta.
Been going here for years and we believe this was the best dinner..rare tuna...shrimp n grits...we have ever had. Love the new bathrooms.
Excellent raw tuna tartare. Very subtle dressing. Beautiful seared tuna dish and Scallops. Excellent meal.
Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was outstanding - as usual. I have never had anything from the menu that I didn’t enjoy.
Great restaurant! Service and food were awesome. I asked for a variation from the menu and was accommodated with a smile and no hesitation, "of course we can do that!". This is a little more upscale than the average seafood restaurant in Charleston (white linen table cloths, waiters in white coats). But, we were ready to be pampered and were not disappointed. Great wine selection and menu.
Great food and we had a large time at the bar. We come every year to Charleston and always eat at Hank's
Great food! Good service! We always eat there when in Charleston! Can’t beat the food consistency and the wait staff if top notch! Get the grouper
Excellent food and service, great menu for people with celiac disease. No problems with cross contamination.
The fried oysters were the best I have ever had--to die for.
Old school ambience great menu selection of seafood and local dishes Seafood a la wandoo a great dish worth trying.
Hank's is an old time seafood restaurant. White paper table covers masquerade as white cloth. The service is top notch. The seafood was fresh. The noise level was very energetic. Hank's is obviously a South Carolina mainstay.
As always, food was great and service good. Only concern was fact that despite reservation, we weren’t seated until 30 minutes after the reservation time. This could have been mitigated by a comfortable place to wait and have a drink, but there was absolutely no place to go. Still one of our favorite places to eat, just need to accept these concerns.
What a great meal. Really good service. Had the roasted grouper and my wife the salmon. Highly recommend.
I felt rushed - entrees came out the second the salad plates were lifted. In and out in less than one hour and it felt like they were trying to turn the tables as fast as possible. Food was too salty for my liking. The server was attentive.
The food was not as good as it was in the past. They do not offer the sweet potato fries with the platter anymore and won't make substitutions. That's a problem if you have allergies. I'm allergic to shellfish, but not to fish, so I couldn't order a platter as they all have shrimp.
It was great
The food was excellent and the service was efficient, but somewhat terse and the pacing was very fast. We were served our appetizers, entrees, and dessert in just over an hour.
I was hoping for more, people spoke highly of the food which is why we went, but we were not impressed.
Great dinner and overall dining experience. First dinner while on our vacation to Charleston and so far the best yet.
The service was excellent, only exceeded by the food, great meal!
Food was very good and The wait staff was excellent. Noise level was very high and diminished the enjoyment of the experience.
When you ask friends about Charleston. They instantly recommend food places. So. This was a friends recommendation. The she crab soup was excellent. The Seafood Ala Wando was great. The pecan pie was good. But cold in the middle. Only complaint about Charleston is why are beers $8 and desserts $ 10 for a piece of pie. But I knew that going in.
Disappointing meal. Ordered the tuna. It was “stringy” and tough to eat. We were so looking forward to bringing friends here because our meal was delicious the last time we were here. Service was good. Definitely not worth the price.
My parents were visiting from the north and wanted to have a downtown Charleston experience. Hanks provided that with great food and even better service !
This is our first visit to Charleston and we decided to try this restaurant based on reviews and also on the recommendation of the bar tender at the hotel we are staying at. We were not disappointed in the least! My wife and I both ordered the flounder and it was fabulous. There is a reason reviews are favorable and the place was busy. Great place to eat!
Great service and food. The menu selections and wine was excellent. Highly recommended to all.
Hank’s Seafood is truly a world class eatery. We loved the ambiance, the wood paneling, the service, the attention to detail, the noise level (a bit high, but expected) and of course the food! We split a calamari which is the best we’ve ever had. My wife loved her broiled shrimp platter, and I devoured the just off the boat grouper. We’d come back to Charleston just to go back.
Was in the area early, 8:30 reservation we arrived at 5:30 they gladly took us, greatly appreciated. The service was excellent and attentive with great advice on food and the area, especially from a fellow Jerseyan. The she crab soup was excellent. My wife fried seafood platter was very good. I wanted to try shrimp and grits, was semi disappointed by the tomato sauce thought it was just going to be slice tomatoes, the color threw me off, but it tasted very good. The best seafood we had during our visit to Charleston
The food is solidly good. Nothing too spectacular or "cheffy" (which is a relief since it happens faaaar too much in Charleston). The menu would be improved by indicating which dishes contained local ingredients. The wine list is good and prices reasonable. Service was v. good since the waiter that we had wanted to do his job in an informative and efficient manner and not apply to be our friend.
Excellent restaurant in Charleston. Great selection of seafood plates. Service is excellent. Nice ambiance in a very traditional place. There are many good restaurants in Charleston but Hanks is definitely one of them.
