Hank's Oyster Bar - Alexandria
Saturday & Sunday 11:00am-12:00am
Reliable and great for your lobster or clam roll fix. Love their seafood and the coleslaw. Good selection of beers. One of our regular go-to spots in Old Town but be sure you have a reservation.
So delicious! Love Hanks every time we go. Heard the table behind us raving about their fish and chips, which we will try next time! Had two trout dishes and both were exquisite.
First time there, it was outstanding. Oysters for appetizers then boullibase and steamed mussels. All excellent.
Best Food around.
Hank’s is always satisfying. We like to eat the bar, but this time ate in the dining area. Was sat next to a leaking ceiling/ HVAC(?). Chairs uncomfortable. Waiter was friendly. Oysters great. Bouillabaisse outstanding, especially the broth. Reasonable wine list. Will come back.
Great food and bar! Highly recommend trying all the varieties of oysters and the lobster roll was one of the best I've had.
Won't be going back only thing I liked was the drink crab cake didn't taste like it didn't have any crab meat inside the fries were burnt
The food was great. I’ve had oysters here several times. This time they were just OK. They ran out of a couple good ones. The shrimp or excellent. I’m taking off to stars one or the ambience/restaurant. This place is always packed which is a good thing and a bad thing. The chairs are really small like outdoor style. I don’t understand why they don’t remodel or get a larger space in old town. There’s no need to play music because people just talk louder in such a small space. I’m taking off another star because the drinks were absolutely horrible. The second time that I’ve ordered drinks the same drink twice and it came out tasting completely different the second time. Go for the oysters and a light dinner then go to another bar and drink.
Oysters and service were great, no issue there. My REAL problem was the crab cakes. No backfin, all filler, and not cheap. Also their signature "lobster roll was more mayonnaise than lobster. Go for the oysters, beers on tap and wine.
Very good food. Service was very friendly but pretty slow. Would go again for the delicious oysters and entrees, but it was pretty crowded and noisy.
Never a bad meal at Hank's and I try different things each time. This time the shrimp and avocado salad was very light and flavorful. Best key lime pie too!
Everything was ok but the lobster rolls.
You can’t screw up a lobster roll. Chunks of fresh lobster meat with a little mayo and seasoning.
So what was the stringy stuff that looked like cole slaw. Back to the kitchen chef.
The service was quite good throughout our meal - hit all the marks of attentiveness. Two of our party had lobster rolls and enjoyed them, I had the scallops and enjoyed them. The noise level is not "energetic" (Open Table's term) ... it's downright loud when it's full (which it is most of the time).
The restaurant is pricey (I'd say $$) but enjoyable if you're wanting to spend the money.
Hank's is always one of my favorite dinner spots. The oysters and specials are always excellent. I can't recommend this place enough. If you are coming with a party of 2 or more, make a reservation, this place is usually busy.
I waited in the bar for my date and it was very cool and the service was awesome. I would have preferred to just stay at the bar and eat some food or try the oysters - since it was a date, we took the table I reserved. It was okay at the table...but it felt like every other restaurant that has good food I’ve been to. I recommend hanging in the bar - plus that’s where you get the happy hour specials !
From service to food, great local spot. Thank you to the whole gang.
Service was wonderful. Food was good, but overpriced for the quality.
The best dining experience you will have in old town Alexandria, and D.C. MD Northern Virginia area for that matter, hands down! Excellent staff and service. Best oysters, as far as quality and selection I have ever had, period! I would give this place 10 stars if I could!
Great food for a reasonable price. Very good wines pairing with the seafood.
Everything about Hanks was amazing! Started off with the fried oysters and the special punch which were so delicious! Not for sure if the sauce for the oysters were made in house but it was mouthwatering! Between my boyfriend and I, we could eat about 5 servings of just that!
We were informed that the special punch changes every week and has not been repeated in the past 3 years! The chefs did an amazing job with the weekly punch and I’m dying for the recipe!
The entire experience was top notch from the service to the food. We will most def be returning to hanks in the next few weeks :)
As always, perfect service, fresh, amazing food, a good drink and a good book to read. I dined by myself, and loved it
Best lobster roll, best fries, best ceviche and best waiter! Will be back to show my appreciation!
Oysters and crab cake were excellent! Service was spot on!
Service was prompt and friendly. Oysters were fresh, cold, and delicious. The dining room is noisy when it’s busy - energetic is the way I would describe it but don’t come on the weekend expecting to have a quiet conversation. Overall, Hanks is always a winner!
Food and service outstanding. The challenge is it is very noisy and makes it hard to have a conversation
Outstanding oysters and soft shell crab!
Will always dine there on future trips.
Friend in from Chicago
Amazing oysters! The cocktail sauce was the best I've ever had. Wish I could have tried more things on the menu! Heard the lobster roll and crab and corn tamale were amazing, but my friend did not enjoy the soft shell crab. (I have some temporary dietary restrictions). I got the mixed seafood grill. Veggies were a little under seasoned, but the seafood was all amazing. I devoured it!
We had a great meal at Hank's! Our server was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful! The oysters were delicious! We LOVED the watermelon salad-gorgeous and delicious!
Server was great and very attentive. Ordered ceviche with jalapeno but didn't taste the pepper. Also ordered side of marinated beets. They treated like they were just emptied out of a can, no additional flavor at all.
Just moved to the neighborhood and it's one of our favorite spots already! Had dined at their Wharf location before - definitely a smaller space in Old Town but the food is just as good and it has a fun neighborhood vibe. Definitely try the crab and corn tamale on the summer menu - so good!
I cannot get past the prices of this restaurant compared to the very dumpy and dingy atmosphere. The dinners average $20-35, which is fine for fish, but the dining experience is too unpleasant for those prices. I arrived on time for my reservation. Although there were other tables open, I was seated right at the top of the stairs to the basement and directly across from the dirty dishes bus station for the whole restaurant. We got to experience the hub bub of every gross dirty dish in the restaurant going by us bumping our chairs each time they went. There should not be a table in that location!!!! Was I sat at this location because I was with a very quiet, well behaved 8 year old and not fellow happy hour buddies? It was darker than night where we sat although it was beautiful out - the restaurant is dimly lit to hide how dingy it is. My son said the bathroom was DISGUSTING and asked me to wash him off when he came out. We could barely speak to each other in the midst of the dish commotion and noise. Our dinners were good. But they also clearly are trying to rush you along and oversell on drinks to try to turn the tables over many times. Maybe they could use some of that money on paint or a ceiling. I've been there twice now and just think it is not worth it. You can go to Hummingbird or Bastille and eat fish or other food in a clean quiet environment for the same $$.
The tuna tartare was divine as were the fried oysters which is the best I have ever had and I travel extensively overseas and in the US. The seared scallops were cooked perfectly.
Great raw oysters; especially happy hour (only 5:30-6:30 in the dining room). Incredibly fresh fried oysters, seared scallops are a regular favorite, and the mussels are the best around. Haven't been disappointed yet! No "regular" bottled beers (read: Bud Light) but pretty good alternatives. Good beer and wine selection for the rest of us. It gets very loud, however, when full. Still, a favorite!
Amazing everything! Thank you for a great night out.
I like the place; unfortunately this visit was disappointing. It proves Anthony Bourdain's advice not to go to restaurants on Mondays. My food (grilled seafood) was pretty cold, with clear signs of being reheated. This is a restaurant you go to for food, not ambiance: the feel is of a noisy bar.
Disappointing and barely average food experience (except oyster selection, quality and service good) made worse by subpar service from start to finish with the exception of the hostess and busboy (girl). Would recommend for oyster bar but not dinner. Not a bad restaurant but with so many superior options in this area cannot recommend.
The Po Boys are a must!
Our favorite restaurant! That’s really all I wanted to say but am required to write 50 characters so here you go
We started with cocktails, and I had the Hanky Panky which is a lemon based cocktail. It was fabulous, and after tasting mine, another person at my table ordered one for her second drink. We tried the Pacific oysters because our server, Luis, recommended them, and he was spot on. They were fantastic! I had the corn and crab tamale which is sooo good and gluten free too (I have to be for medical reasons). My husband had the scallops which were perfectly cooked. He loved his entree too. We split chocolate mousse (well, I say "split," but my husband ate about 3/4's of it!). Luis brought us some complimentary dark chocolate pieces, and they paired perfectly with the end of the Hanky Panky. I was surprised by how deliciously the two went together. We will definitely be returning! We had a reservation for 6:15 but were not seated until about 6:50, so I'm hoping they will work on getting better about either the times they accept reservations or how long patrons must wait.
