Hank's Oyster Bar - Alexandria
Saturday & Sunday 11:00am-12:00am
Great Oyster Po'boy - oysters, bun, coleslaw all have great flavors that align.
I had hear good things about Hanks Oyster bar so I was excited to take my girlfriend there for dinner Saturday night. We made reservations and arrived on time. The entrance was crowded when we arrived and we ended up standing in the doorway while waiting for our table. It's nothing new for a restaurant to be crowded in Old Town on a Saturday night however it would have been nice to have a small area to wait without having to stand in the doorway. After about 5 minutes we were escorted to our table. The cramped theme continued in the dining area. Tables are far to close together which makes you feel like your sitting on top of the guest next to you. The noise level was to a point where my girlfriend and I could not have a pleasant conversation across the table. We found ourselves yelling at each other in order to be heard. The food however was tasty however the portions were small considering the price. $130 for two entries and some oysters was a bit much. This is probably a great place to go for happy hour with your buddies but I would not suggest taking a date.
I like the food and drinks (coctails were pretty good), didn't like grilled calamari (it didn't taste much). Beet salad was very good as well.
Seated promptly on time. Service was excellent. The seafood was fantastic. Probably the best Oysters Rockefeller I’ve ever had.
Food portions were very small (large plate). Oyster po' boy lacked adequate seasoning.
Very good place for casual dining
After church brunch
If you love oysters, this is the place to come! The oysters were super fresh and very tasty! We had both raw oysters and fried and both were delicious. Also noticeable was the quiet ambiance-- we could actually talk without amped up music competing in the background. The ambiance itself is simple and nothing fancy, but we loved the quiet!
Very convenient to hotel and good atmosphere
Food was excellent! Fresh oysters to start followed by lamb chops which were perfectly seared. Wife had an entree with scallops which she loved. Friendly service and casual atmosphere. I also recommend the mules!
We frequently dine at Hank’s and usually really enjoy the food and service. Not so much this time! Hank’s is always noisy, but the noise this time was just unbearable! I had the mussels which are always quite good, and I did enjoy them. My husband decided to try the scallop entree, and, though tasty, we were both surprised to see how small the entree turned out to be. For the price, the serving should have been much more generous. Also, the service was way below the usual for Hank’s.They were very busy, as always, but our waiter was not attentive at all. We had to wait for quite a while to place our order, and then again to order a second round of drinks. Also, my husband ordered a side which our waiter never brought. We will go back because they have the best oysters anywhere, but this was certainly not our best experience at Hank’s!
Great meal as always.
We were here on vacation, meeting a couple of friends, one also from out of state. My husband had a knee injury, so had rented a motorized scooter to get around. Since Hank’s is not accessible due to entryway stairs, he had to leave the scooter outside on the sidewalk. They seated us right in front of the window that was in front of his scooter so we could keep an eye on it. Two of us ordered the large oyster plate, which came with fries and slaw, another ordered the small oyster plate which didn’t come with fries and not as many oysters, and the other friend ordered raw oysters. We ordered the chocolate mousse for dessert. Our server was very knowledgeable about the oysters and wine, and service was quick and friendly. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals & would definitely go back!
Best fried oysters ever!!
Hank's is my local go-to for warm atmosphere, excellent seafood, and consistently great service. I've eaten at the bar, in the main dining area and this past time, a real treat: the table in the window area!
My husband loves the variety of fresh oysters. My favorite is the trout with lemon and capers. I highly recommend Hank's.
We had oysters on Thursday night and enjoyed the experience so much that we cancelled our Friday night reservations at a steakhouse and returned to Hanks for mussels. This will be my go-to for at least one meal with every visit to DC!
Great atmosphere and food, as always.
I ordered the oyster pi-boy but the bread was for a lobster roll. I wish they mentioned it I would have ordered something else .
Excellent food, great service, no nonsense presentation. Great bartender.
The seafood stew was simply amazing. Lovely wines by the glass. Service was outstanding.
One of my go to places in Alexandria for a good meal. Always hot, fresh and delicious. Service is always good and can’t beat the goldfish and chocolate. I love Hanks!
The service was good, but the food was not that great for the price. My wife had the avocado salad with shrimp. She said it had too much seasoning. I had the Ipswich fried clams, Large Plate. The large plate meant the order came with fries and cole slaw. The fries were excellent. The slaw was a little lacking in flavor, kind of bland. The clams were a little tough an somewhat ordinary. I thought the $31 price tag was a little high for a meal that was little more than a "cafe" type meal.
Very well taken care of! New favorite spot!
Excellent oysters as usual! Great service at the bar.
The restaurant was surprisingly good. The noise level is very high ~ impossible to have a conversation. However, the food and service were both great ~ ambiance was as you would expect in a New England clam shack.
Our favorite restaurant in the area. The closest we get to the food we miss back in Boston. Doesn't matter which location, the quality is always top notch.
First time visit- we went for an early dinner and they had availabilities. We sat in a quiet area and, even when the restaurant filled up later, we still had easy conversation. Service was friendly and efficient. The server recommended the wine punch with blackberry-infused vodka and it was delicious. We split the steamed mussels appetizer and I couldn’t stop sopping up the broth with bread. Both my mixed seafood grill and my husband’s rainbow trout with lemon caper butter sauce were delicious. The duck fat roasted potatoes were to die for. We were really happy with our meal and hope to bring guests in the future.
Great lobster roll! Great waiter!
Excellent dining experience. Service was impeccable and the fried oysters were among the best I’ve ever tasted. The dark chocolate at the end of the meal was the perfect way to finish.
Excellent service and great food
Overall it was a good experience. I made a reservation, and when I arrived I was told I was checked in and would wait for the next available table. That isn't how it normally seems to be for reservations but I went with it. We didn't have to wait too terribly long. My companions and I shared the dozen mixed oysters which was a good idea. For our mains we had mussels, lobster roll and bouillabaisse. The lobster roll was pretty blah... do not get it. The other food was good. I would suggest having a few more "land" options if non-seafood eaters are dragged here :)
I love Hank’s. Great atmosphere and good food and service was wonderful. I just feel the prices are a tad high but I keep coming back so it doesn’t deter me from eating there. It is just a little pricey.
We had reservations but had to wait over 30 minutes to be seated. There was no place to wait. The woman at the front of the house was surly when we entered. If I hadn't eaten there before and knew the food would be good, would have left. The bar tender saved the day and comped us drinks. The waiter was great and so was the food. Just unfortunate that the person asdigned to greet you is unfriendly and had attitude.
Hank's Oyster Bar is one of my go-to restaurants because they do seafood so very well. This visit didn't disappoint. Shared oysters from MD/VA with a friend, we had a lovely bottle of cava, and a perfect lobster bisque. Finished with their signature small bowl of chocolate chunks. Yum.
Good oysters. Very quiet and lights a bit too bright for a romantic or fun night. We were in the bar so maybe it's different in the dining room.
We love Hank's. The seafood is fresh and delicious. The service is very good too. It's a lively place and fun for a get together.
Loved our meal- my parents especially enjoyed their oysters! The only small issue we had was the wait between being seated and being greeted by our server/ordering drinks and apps.
Great meal. I had corvina which was so well prepared with some Brussels sprout leaves and a delicious creamy yet light sauce. My companion had fried oysters which were actually lightly fried and were also very good. A busy place on a Friday night for sure.
We ordered th lobster bisque soup- there was lots of lobster in it!!!😊 The bisque looked and tasted like Campbell’s tomato soup☹️. I he fish of the day was trout- just ok. The appetizer shrimp and calamari was plentiful and delicious. The service was good. Wine
The oysters are always great! Fresh and fried. Lobster bisque is awful. It tastes like canned tomao soup with some tough lobster pieces.
