Hank's Oyster Bar - Alexandria
The fried oysters were excellent, cooked perfectly. Nice choices of oysters for every taste bud requirement. However, the service was not what we would have expected. Our waitress was rude and what was worse than her demeanor was the fact that she got our raw oyster selection incorrect. When paying 2.75 a shell, you would expect to receive the correct oysters.
One of the best dining experiences of my life!
Great food and large portions! Even the small plates were large! Great oysters and very fresh salad. A bit nosey but always a fun place for a good dinner. Great service and helpful waiter . We do love Hanks!
We love all of Hank's location, but especially the Old Town Oyster Bar. The staff is amazing, the food is delicious, the oysters are fresh, and the ambiance is perfect. Still a favorite for us.
New menu. Disappointed that the shrimp and avocado salad had been removed from the menu. However, food always delicious.
Tasty food and drinks!
Ordered lobster bisque and although it was good, it was more of a tomato soup with lobster. On the other hand, had a steak sandwich that excellent!
Always try to arrange a meal at Hank’s when I visit the Alexandria area and they NEVER disappoint! The oysters were amazing, and then followed them up with a Lobster Roll that - to use a southern euphemism - would make a bishop kick a hole in a stained glass window. Love this place!!
We eat here all the time and love it - however this experience was disappointing.. Friday night - incredibly crowded and so loud my wife and I could barely hold a conversation. The waiter was nice but rushed us through dinner - less than an hour start to finish.
My mussels tasted very “fishy” and the red sauce had zero flavor. My wife’s trout was swimming in an inch of butter but also strangely had little taste.
Beet and Caesar salads were fine - cocktails were also fine.
Perhaps just an off night - this is one of our go-to spots in OT so hopefully a blip.
Great atmosphere. The place has a wonderful vibe. Great staff. Inviting neighborhood bar. But the food didn’t blow me away. But IWILL go back - and give them a second chance for sure. And try something else on the menu. (I did order steak at a seafood restaurant!)
I go to Hank's often and love it. This week on a Thursday night it was extremely loud -- hard to have a conversation at your table. Also the food disappointed for the first time, the roasted Brussels Sprouts came out soggy. I ordered the Lobster Bisque and was astonished at the very large serving -- too much really, and while the chunks of lobster meat were plentiful, they were a bit tough. So this visit I give Hank's 3 stars and encourage them to try to do something about the noise. Note -- great service, and I sent back the Brussels which were taken off my bill.
We had reservations but the table wasn’t ready - sat at the bar which was not a big deal. Martinis were $15 each - a bit pricey we thought !
At dinner our server was knowledgeable about the food choices . Oysters were Fresh and tasty. and our salads and ceviche were
Also tasty and fresh tasting. Entrees were noted to be good as well. I’d definitely return to Hanks and just skip the martinis!
Just great food and service. Always. Look forward to the next visit.
Overpriced, but decent food. Good mixed drinks. Trout and Mahi Mahi average.
Fantastic experience after having not eaten at Hanks in a few years (living out of the area). Will definitely come back!
The service and the food were wonderful. Will go back again.
Great seafood with ample proportions, great service.
Hanks is always a favorite of my wife’s and mine. Go to date place and the food is outstanding.
The food at Hank’s was okay. If you are looking for good service in Old Town this might be a good place to visit. If you are looking for value (great food at a reasonable price), look elsewhere.
Great raw oysters
Great fried oysters
Ordered from the daily special menu. The mixed grilled seafood plate with green beans and potatoes was outstanding. Also enjoyed the lamb shank, which was very tender and flavorful accompanied with cheesy grits. The lamb was a bit pricey for the size of the portion, but I also was very hungry and could probably have eaten 2 portions that evening.
Oysters were fantastic. All the meals quite good -- seafood. The only down side was the less than stellar service.
The bar makes great drinks - and the oysters here are always spectacular. Most important, the staff know about the oysters and can get you exactly what you want. Portions are large (perhaps too large). Always good service.
Love Hank's Oyster Bar (Old Town edition)...they never disappoint!
Exceptionally slow service - every table around us was trying to flag down the waiter as well. Was
Probably 20 minutes after we sat that someone asked if we wanted a drink. Just seemed like they didn’t have remotely enough people working. Even on arrival, we couldn’t open the door and waited on the steps a while because they didn’t clear people from in front of the doorway. They happy hour at the bar was packed, and the tables around us seemed overserved and we’re excessively loud. But the food was amazing here, as always. It was sad the service didn’t match.
Though a little expensive (it is fish) it was worth every penny!
My wife and I went here on New Year's Eve for the first time, and we don't plan to go back. We tried some items on their special menu, which were pretty disappointing. We shared the ceviche, which was not very flavorful and was mostly calamari. I tried one of their special cocktails and was not impressed. We both split two entrees, the bouillabaisse and the crab cake. The soup was tasty, but the mussels had lots of sand inside. The crab cake was delicious, but very small for the price. While we expected to pay more than usual due to the holiday, we thought the prices were a bit unreasonable for the size and quality of the dishes. Seating was also very tight due to the holiday (I assume), and service was average.
As always, Hank's came through with superior seafood and great service. Have been there many times and look forward to all future visits.
One of my very favorite restaurants. I visit over and over. The food is consistently good. I always try their "punch"--it is different every time I visit.
Our first visit. Great service and excellent food. Of note was Hank's Manhattan, the fried oyster dinner, caesar salad and chocolate mousse. The environment is energetic, the seating is quite tight, but the service and food make for a great meal.
Oysters and service was awesome!!! Had cool daily specials. Unfortunately, we ordered the shell on shrimp, def had that "Clorox" preservative smell and taste. Dont know if that's where they bought if from or them. Either way, very noticeable so the chef should know!!
Some of the best scallops I ever had. Just incredibly noisy.
My family loves going to Hank's in Old Town. It's become a holiday favorite. Everyone who works there is so friendly and attentive. And the food is great. So much better than Hank's at the overpriced Wharf (noisy, bad service and tasteless lobster roll). I'll take the King Street location any day.
amazing experience as always!!!
As always, the food, ambiance and service were wonderful.
Great oysters. The fish tacos are must try. Some of the best I have had.
There are no better oysters anywhere! Need a fix from Hank’s every so often. They are melt-in-your mouth. Today, Fried—and they were delectable as always.
We did not have room for dessert but had to have the wonderful bread pudding, so we ordered it anyway, packaged to go and they included the divine whiskey sauce that is the perfect finishing touch.
We love Hank's in Alexandria. The food is always great and the service team is outstanding. This is our favorite spot in Old Town, whether stopping for a small plate of fried oysters and beer or a great seafood dinner with friends. We are never disappointed. Go!
Noise level very high at dinner but excellent low level for a late lunch. Excellent food and we have been going there for years. Try the mussels, any kind of oysters, and their greens. Love the chocolate chunks at the end of the meal.
