Hank's Oyster Bar - Alexandria
Would try again just to see if my first time was an aberration.
Oysters were great, the other dishes we ordered including the crab tamal and ceviche were just ok.
Always reliably great!
Oysters at happy hour were a great price and very good.
The noise in the dining room is intolerable. We got there early to get the window table expecting it would be a quieter spot for our party of 4. But at a table nearby, two men with their loud conversation interfered with our own. We've run into similar situations at Hanks before. We love the food but the only place to eat & carry on a conversation is at the bar. And then we must be a party of two.
It was my BF’s bday and we had a phenomenal experience. Our waiter was terrific! Expect us back...!
Since I've dined at HOB before, I decided to stray from the "surf", and see if the "turf" items on the menu were any good -- and much to my delight the burger was delicious! Our waiter was pleasant and accommodating; especially as one of our party was late, fortunately his order was brought out in a timely manner soon after ours.
Extraordinary..we went back the next day!
I went for clams but they did not have any. I ordered lobster bisque, but did not like it at all. Too much sherry. Instead of bread and butter which would have been nice, they give cheddar gold fish. (tacky for a nice restaurant) Very loud and crowded. Not good atmosphere at all.
Great food, pricey though. Service was great but 8 of us were $50 each for lunch.
Great servers! Some of the best Oysters I’ve ever had.
I mentioned we were having a special occasion but no one said anything to us about it.
We have been going to Hank's for years and have loved every meal. The wait staff is consistent and excellent. The meals are very consistent and of high quality. I love the seafood grill and my husband loves the lamb burger. The key lime pie is to die for.....
I had the bouillabaisse and raw oysters. The oysters were good, cold and fresh which you expect at an oyster bar so no big deal. The bouillabaisse wasn’t good at all. A very strange soup base with too much pepper. Rather than dice onions they place in long onion strands which doesn’t help in soups . Lots of shellfish but almost no actual fish. Again I can’t figure out what was in the broth, certainly no white wine and no clam juice as usual. Something bland and whitish and not good tasting. The noise level is impressive. But some acoustic tiles guys.
love the food and loved our waiter....however... got there a bit before my noon reservation and checked in with the hostess at the same time another woman did. I asked if I was the first to arrive and hostess said yes. The other woman and I waited. A group came in with a reservation soon after and were sat. I waited. The other woman's dining companion came in and they were sat. I waited. Finally about 15 minutes after my reservation was set, I asked - gee, are you sure there is no one here waiting for me?? just then I turned to see my guest sticking her head around the corner from the dining area - exasperated because she had given them my name when she was sat and was told there was no reservation in my name! ARGH! The hostess proceeded to act like it was my fault that I had not wandered through the bar and restaurant area myself looking for me guest. ugh.
Very good seafood dishes. Great location in the heart of our Alexandria. So sorry that they were out of fried clams the day that we were there. Maybe another time
Wonderful food& service
We knew they had an oyster special, but was really pleasantly surprised with the oyster hour. I had scallops and my husband had trout. I would have liked to have the sauce from the trout on my scallops. I think something they should consider. We will be back!
Was really excited to try Hank's after walking by a few times on our trip. We made a reservation to dine-in on the last evening of our trip and love the atmosphere and menu options (lot of vegetarian items!). However, our server seemed to lose interest in our table towards the end of our meal and disappeared. Pretty bummed as we wanted to order a few more items but ended up having to hand our credit card over to someone at the register so we could finally leave after not receiving any service after 30+ minutes.
Would recommend if you sit at the bar or plan to spend a lot of money (guessing we didn't spend enough to get service!), otherwise, I would skip.
Restaurant's ambiance and appetizers were ok. The major down side to the dining experience was that the server was aggressive with up selling more oysters. We originally asked for six oysters but he insisted that we try all fourteen oysters from East and West coasts.
Really disappointing first time. Waitress kept dropping and breaking dishes near our area and was not very attentive. Got my order wrong and didn’t do much to fix it or apologize other than having me wait for the right dish. Overall wasn’t great to entire area. Food was good but I know better places with similar entrees so I won’t be back unfortunately. I was scouting it out for my bday dinner next week. Really let down.
Expensive beer & booze, terrible crab cakes and branzini. Oysters were ok. Best think on the menu- Lamb Burger. It’s a seafood restaurant...save your money and avoid Hanks
Always, the oysters -- and a wide variety, as usual. Plus the Sunday special -- fried chicken, first rate.
The hostesses and bartender were all extremely attentive and courteous and made us feel like regulars. We had a great time!
This is without a doubt the best place in Northern Virginia to have oysters. We always come here for them. After spending time in OBX we still like Hanks better than any oyster house on the island. Keep up the good service and food. Always a pleasure.
We were not happy with the menu. There was no flexibility with our request. The server did not offer to check to see if our request could be done!
Enjoy the meal I had and plan to visit again. Some other items on the menu I would like to try.
Great waiter. Good food. Had asked for a specific table when made reservations several days in advanced. Not able to be honored. Seated someone else there. Oh well
While the seafood restaurants along Old Town Alexandria waterfront compete to see which can concoct the most overly-prepared menu items, Hank's knows the real secret to a great seafood dinner. It's the freshest seafood, prepared to feature the natural flavors without drowning them in the latest trendy hot sauce and layers of "stuff." I can always count on Hank's for the best seafood in town. Combine that with a friendly, knowledgeable staff in a room in which you can hear your friends' conversation and you've got an outstanding dinner.
Extremely good food in a pleasant atmosphere. Great service.
Our Old Town Favorite! Claude, the manager makes us feel at home. Tim is our favorite server!
Had a friends dinner and got there early (5p) before the dining room opened and started with cocktails and oysters in the very chill bar area. Very good bar tenders who made some signature drinks that were awesome. Happy hour specials had a select group of oysters for $1.50e. Most were local/east coast and great. Then went in to dining room and had full dinner. The crab cakes were great. Shrimp and calamari app was great. Shrimp PO boy was good but an odd fit. Overall highly recommend.
Wonderful place to enjoy oysters! The Lobster Bisque is good, too.
It is quite good overall. It is my favorite seafood place in the area.
Our waiter was terrific. Friendly but not obtrusive. Gave very good advice about the menu. Food was excellent. Fresh oysters.
Great food. Great service!
Just delicious fresh oysters and delicious fresh well cooked maincourse. Excellent device YUM
Very very noisy but the food is great
Never been to Hank's before and I can tell you this might be the wife's and I new goto! We were sat quickly on a Friday night, server was right there to get us some drinks and offer the happy hour specials. Oysters came out very quickly and were FANTASTIC. And the drink recommendations, which we took, hit the spot. 5 stars, no doubts about it. The goldfish and the dessert chocolates were an awesome touch too!
