Only diners. One very poor main course, bland under seasoned small portion of over cooked sea bass. When paying top prices you do expect a dish to be quality.

The service was very well intentioned but not the staff is not trained or experienced to serve Japanese food. Dishes were served in random order with no sense of timing for the various starters and main courses. Sushi and sashimi fish quality was just adequate and the sushi rice was a bit too hard. A5 wagyu don was good. The seabass main course very poorly prepared with the fish overcooked and very tough. The side vegetables were well cooked and presented. I hope we just visited on an off-night and perhaps the chef was away.

Ordered triple shrimp and tuna tartare as starters. 3 big shrimps all cooked in different ways came out with different sauces on top, yuzu sauce, truffle sauce and orange sauce. they were so unique and delicious. Tuna tartare was perfect, starting from plating and taste. We ordered waygu and cod for dinner and they were to die for. People next to us were having Kaiseki course menu and heard it was amazing. We are coming back for Kaiseki.

Definitely a new hidden gem on east side. From the moment I stepped inside, I was enveloped in an ambiance that exuded tranquility and Zen-like serenity, setting the stage for an extraordinary dining experience. It was definitely on quieter side because they are of soft opening, but I can imagine it will get louder very shortly. The food was nothing short of extraordinary, a symphony of flavors meticulously crafted by culinary artisans. From the sashimi, and perfectly rolled sushi, cod (highly recommend), wagyu plate, every dish showcased the restaurant's commitment to culinary excellence. The ingredients were undoubtedly fresh, and the attention to detail in their preparation was evident. Each dish was beautifully presented. The staff members were attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. I highly recommend if you’re in the area. Definitely go before it gets too busy.

I think this place might be my favorite place in NYC. Definitely need to go before it gets too busy. Tuna tartare was so pretty, and the salads here are not the regular salads you will get at other restaurants. We ordered cod and waygu don. The cod dish has to be one of my favorite dishes, I would definitely come back again for that, and waygu don was perfectly seasoned. The service was amazing and can’t wait to come back.

What went well: The staff was highly professional, kind, and incredibly helpful. The restaurant itself was also well-decorated and chic. What needs improving: The food. Constructive criticism listed below from most to least important. 1. We ordered sukiyaki for three people, and what we received was not sukiyaki. The bowls laid in front of us could be best described as nikujaga (Japanese meat and potato soup) without the jaga (potatoes). The dish bore no resemblance to sukiyaki whatsoever. We were very disappointed knowing good wagyu had gone into the dish. If Hakurakuso wants to charge over one hundred dollars for a serving of sukiyaki, here is what they must do in order to avoid disappointment: - Realize sukiyaki is not a stew or soup. When cooked properly it should have a thick sauce resulting from reduction of sparing amounts of warishita in a very hot pan. - Serve sukiyaki cooked at the table with a portable burner (induction or gas). By cooking themselves, guests can enjoy wagyu hot and cooked to preference instead of lukewarm and overcooked. Cooking at the table also helps achieve the desired sauce consistency mentioned above. - Include raw egg for dipping the meat immediately after it cooks in the hot pan. - Include many more vegetables, preferably at the table for cooking on demand. Our bowls only had small amounts of cabbage included, and sukiyaki is supposed to be a vegetable-heavy affair. - Provide bowls of rice with the sukiyaki. Sukiyaki is not enjoyable without rice due to the intense flavor of the sauce. 2. We ordered rice after receiving our sukiyaki-like dish without rice. The bowls of rice were dry and tasted like frozen rice had been reheated in the microwave. 3. The house sake we were served was room temperature. It would have been much more enjoyable if chilled or heated. It would also be good if Hakurakuso could offer more than just a limited wine selection; it would be best to have various sake, shochu, and Japanese beers available.

Thank you for bringing these points to our attention as it helps us strive for improvement. The reason for using clay pots is to ensure that the food remains warm for an extended period. It's important to note that Chef Kelly specializes in Kanto style sukiyaki. The description you provided seems to align more with Kansas sukiyaki or Osaka-style sukiyaki. I would like to clarify that we did not microwave the sushi rice. We carefully selected IWAI rice, known for its superior quality.

I had the so called “kaiseki” course here but it was far off from what kaiseki should be. There were no hints of traditional Japanese kaiseki, more of a French/Japanese mixed fusion course so if you are looking for a traditional “kaiseki” course, definitely not the place to go. That said, the food itself wasn’t that bad. To accompany the course we ordered some white wine, and to our shock they did not have a white wine we ordered chilled! First time experience of ordering white wine (Chardonnay) and being asked if we wanted room temperature or chilled. Overall food and drink was not catastrophically bad but probably not worth the budget.

Hey! Thank you for your feedback, I would like to suggest that you might see some mixed fusion or mix of French and Japanese from the plate choices and plating of the dishes and we sincerely apologize with issues regarding the drinks. Due to our situation with soft-opening we just now finished our full list of drinks for our menu. We will fix these issues, Thank you for pointing them out! -Hakurakuso
