Japanese
Hakubai Japanese Restaurant, you don’t have to fly to Japan to enjoy the finest in Japanese cuisine. The unique Kaiseki cuisine of the Hakubai Japanese Restaurant has been described by the New York Times as “rarefied” and “excellent.”

Kaiseki is a distinctive and delicate cuisine with roots in Zen Buddhism and the
traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The multi-course dinner is served on an exquisite
array of porcelain, pottery and lacquer dishware at carefully timed intervals.

This restaurant is not good value for money. It is very expensive for what it is and the food was fine but not outstanding. There is a lot of staff to serve yet I had to wait for a long time to get somebody’s attention to get the check. The ambiance is dull, being in the basement of the hotel. Some of the guests next to me had a meat dish on a hot skillet and my clothes smelt of that dish after I left the restaurant.

The best Sushi we have ever had served to us outside of Japan. Cannot more highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to experience Sushi and Sashimi at its best. The cost is commensurate with the quality of the food, but if you factor in travel expenses, it is much cheaper than the cost the same food would be in its native country.

If considering Hakubai for a special dinner I would definitely recommend the kaiseki over the sushi dinner - the sushi was enjoyable but probably not worth the premium it comes at. I did visit on a Sunday night however and the freshness of the fish might have suffered due to this. The ambience and the staff were both great. Not recommended for people who enjoy a drink with their meal, alcohol is at a ridiculous upcharge that I just couldn't find it in me to justify.
Tl;dr: Its one of the few places I could find in the area for high class sushi on a Sunday night, not recommended for heavy drinkers - the kaiseki probably shines more than the selection of sushi. The Maguro was the star.

I love this restaurant. I have spent a great deal of time over the years in Japan. This restaurant made me feel as it I were back in Japan. The Hakubai lunch course was excellent. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough. A real treasure.

The food at Hakubai is some of the best in New York. It is a quiet and sparely designed Japanese style space. The fish is superb. The wait staff is professional and never intrusive or chatty. While it's a bit expensive, It's a great place for a business meal, as it's easy to have a conversation with the lower noise level.

Lovely discovery on Park Ave: I had the Okonomi Sushi Kaiseki, which was a perfectly-sized almost traditional kaiseki, lacking only a gohan dish at the end. I'll come back to try the Omakase Kaiseki, which requires a day's advance warning. I cannot praise the service enough; they were great about answering my many questions.

Great ambiance, food, & service.

It is a a bit pricey. But I think it well worth it. We spent almost 2 hours for the Kaiseiki dinner. We were well served all this time with excellence dishes, clear explanation and each dishes serve in between timing was well calculate. I had the Sushi Kaiseiki and my wife was having the Special Kaiseiki. I didn't get to taste her different dishes. But mine were good enough. Will return there again.

Food is quite good, but it is very expensive for what it is. It is very much a business/expense account restaurant. They are never even half full, and would be were they to drop prices. Hard for two even without drinking to get out for under $140 including tip.

The atmosphere is nice (quiet enough for a conversation) and the service is quite nice. But I am not sure about the food. It wasn’t bad, but I felt it was overpriced for what it is, and it wasn’t among the top sushi I had. It is ok for a Japanese restaurant in the US.

This is one of the best "real" Japanese restaurants in New York. The food is excellent, though the menu is fairly narrow in scope. Service is also excellent, but it helps if you already know something about Japanese cuisine--the staff explanations are a little vague.

Food, service and ambiance were all excellent - we went to experience authentic Japanese cuisine and we were not disappointed - this restaurant goes way beyond the usual sushi place :) Very quiet - no TV screens and limited cell phone reception (as it’s located below the ground floor) so no loud conversations on the phone

We had the Bento box and it was very nicely presented and tasty. We missed the kaiseki lunch since it required a 24 hour advance notice. That will be our meal next time we are in NYC. Lunch seems like a good bargain, compared to the dinner offerings.

It really felt like we were dining in a restaurant in Japan as the ambience, the Kimono-clad servers & the many Japanese patrons made it seem so. The shabu shabu wagyu set was really amazing. We could have a mix of set courses & ala carte dishes at the same table. Each course was beautifully presented, explained & tasted really fresh & amazing. This was a meal worth raving about.

As a FREQUENT CUSTOMER, suggest you train your staff to EXPLAIN the menu KNOWINGLY & CAREFULLY. The manager must responsibly undertake the error of their staff.
