Japanese
Hakubai Japanese Restaurant, you don’t have to fly to Japan to enjoy the finest in Japanese cuisine. The unique Kaiseki cuisine of the Hakubai Japanese Restaurant has been described by the New York Times as “rarefied” and “excellent.”

Kaiseki is a distinctive and delicate cuisine with roots in Zen Buddhism and the
traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The multi-course dinner is served on an exquisite
array of porcelain, pottery and lacquer dishware at carefully timed intervals.

Great food, service and one of the best Japanese restaurants I have been to in NYC. Highly recommend. An overall experience that many restaurants could take a page out of this playbook.

The surroundings were subdued, plenty of space between tables so it was comfortable for having a conversation. Food was bland and boring. The menu was confusing and difficult to decipher. Our server was not helpful. She seemed to have an attitude and was unpleasant in how she treated us.

I'm all about healthy, clean eating and normally you can't go wrong at a higher end sushi restaurant, but I was mistaken. For the price you pay, you'd think they'd have higher grade ingredients such as natural soy sauce and rice vinegar. Natural soy sauce contains no additives such as wheat or gluten. Luckily, I always bring my own just in case but didn't feel I should have considering what I was paying to eat there. Sashimi was top grade but very small thin slices. Sushi rolls were good and sushi was fresh. All in all, what I COULD eat was good but way over priced for poor quality ingredients.

Excellent quality of the food . Many small rooms with a few tables each. Quiet environment where it is possible to have a good conversation, which is rare in this city. Service is good, well mannered people, could explain a little bit more .

I had a beautifully memorable dining experience at the Hotel Kitano Hakubai Restaurant on Saturday, November 2nd, 2019. I chose the Special Kaiseki with a flight of Saki. Yes, it was expensive, but worth every cent. For 2.5 hours I was delighted to be served so many small, delicious, and interesting dishes that I lost count! These small items were presented imaginatively, some in delicate artistic glass containers, others were arranged on a large curling leaf (banana) or brought to me sizzling on a small cast iron grill placed aesthetically over a bed of pebbles. My waiter had infinite patience with my questions. He was also attentive without being obtrusive. The restaurant environment was peaceful, even contemplative. If you would like an experience of Japan without the long plane ride, the Hakubai at Hotel Kitano NYC is the place.

This restaurant is not good value for money. It is very expensive for what it is and the food was fine but not outstanding. There is a lot of staff to serve yet I had to wait for a long time to get somebody’s attention to get the check. The ambiance is dull, being in the basement of the hotel. Some of the guests next to me had a meat dish on a hot skillet and my clothes smelt of that dish after I left the restaurant.

The best Sushi we have ever had served to us outside of Japan. Cannot more highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to experience Sushi and Sashimi at its best. The cost is commensurate with the quality of the food, but if you factor in travel expenses, it is much cheaper than the cost the same food would be in its native country.

If considering Hakubai for a special dinner I would definitely recommend the kaiseki over the sushi dinner - the sushi was enjoyable but probably not worth the premium it comes at. I did visit on a Sunday night however and the freshness of the fish might have suffered due to this. The ambience and the staff were both great. Not recommended for people who enjoy a drink with their meal, alcohol is at a ridiculous upcharge that I just couldn't find it in me to justify. Tl;dr: Its one of the few places I could find in the area for high class sushi on a Sunday night, not recommended for heavy drinkers - the kaiseki probably shines more than the selection of sushi. The Maguro was the star.

The food at Hakubai is some of the best in New York. It is a quiet and sparely designed Japanese style space. The fish is superb. The wait staff is professional and never intrusive or chatty. While it's a bit expensive, It's a great place for a business meal, as it's easy to have a conversation with the lower noise level.

Lovely discovery on Park Ave: I had the Okonomi Sushi Kaiseki, which was a perfectly-sized almost traditional kaiseki, lacking only a gohan dish at the end. I'll come back to try the Omakase Kaiseki, which requires a day's advance warning. I cannot praise the service enough; they were great about answering my many questions.
