Haikan is our second Sapporo Ramen shop in DC after Daikaya. Haikan means, “pipe works” in Japanese, an ode to Atlantic Plumbing Building where we are located. At Haikan, we focused on creating the taste of ramen from the showa period, the golden age of ramen in Japan. There are over 1000 ramen shops in the city of Sapporo alone, and we are excited to share a completely new line-up of traditional Sapporo style ramen in DC. In addition to ramen, we are serving a playful selection of Japanese-inspired kozara (small plates) to share, or to start with, or to make a whole meal of by picking a few of them. Haikan's bar serves a collection of Japanese-inspired cocktails, and a concentrated selection of Japanese sake, shochu, beer, whisky, and more.

Ramen

Our noodles are custom made for us in Sapporo, Japan. The stock is made in-house and simmered for about 8 hours with high quality bones (chicken, beef, pork) along with kombu, onions, and garlic producing a clear broth that's delicate yet complex. All of the bowls (except the veggie) are topped with garlic, onions, bean sprouts, ground pork, chashu, nori, and scallions. The veggie comes with egg-free noodles and topped with assorted vegetables making it vegan friendly

Great Ramen, fast friendly service. Nice casual ambiance, tastefully colorful interior. Moderately busy on a Sunday afternoon. Opentable texted me and I texted back saying I was indeed on the way. Train was delayed so we arrived 20 minutes later than reservation time. There were many tables available and we did enjoy a nice meal but Hostess said she would have to mark us as a 'No Show' on Open table. This was disappointing.

Server was rude, forgot lemon and lime for my water.. had to ask 3 times, more concerned about cleaning a dirty table than getting me the lemon and lime and there were other open clean tables for the best guest, ordered 2 parcooked noodles when I only asked for one to-go, didn’t take it off the bill after his mistake, and I think lewis knows it’s automatic gratuity so he doesn’t really care except about alcohol orders. Wish we had Alex or Tiffany but I’ll still be coming back for the food so his service didn’t ruin that

Always love dining here. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is lovely. The outdoor area is mostly enclosed and heated, so it's still a good experience in the cold weather.

Perfect neighborhood gem. This place is always a sure win, great for date night or a stop before a show at the 9:30 Club. Don't sleep on the vegetarian ramen - it's just as great as the others (some black magic at work there, no doubt).

Overall we had a great experience. Bartender was attentive, and helpful & the food was delicious. Towards the end of my time, at the bar, I was very disheartened to witness the latin male manager at the host stand deny two [black] women from being able to sit at the bar, while simultaneously ushering two other [white] women to sit in the seats instead. This was after the black women were told by the hostess that they could sit there, and that the bar was first come first serve. The male manager proceeded to run up behind the women as they're preparing to sit, and tells them that the "first come first serve" policy is no longer the case, in order to justify seating who he preferred. When it was communicated to them that they were told they could sit there, he didn't care to accommodate them at all. To add insult to injury, we were willing to get up from our seats sooner in order to make it work for both parties to have seats at the bar, and the manager would not allow us to do that either. When the women were understandably upset by the way they were being handled, the man's response was "ok, well you can leave." Is this how your management staff is trained to treat paying customers? Or is it just paying customers of color? Either way, the behavior was disgusting and unacceptable, regardless of who is on the receiving end. While I would like to come back again, I was thoroughly disturbed by what I witnessed, and am hesitant to return if there is a chance I will be met with racism and gatekeeping, based on who's in charge on a given night. Definitely something that needs to be addressed.

Over all, the food and service was amazing! However, we had made a reservation for outside, but the patio was closed. It shouldn’t have let us make a reservation, because we showed up and we’re told we had to wait 30-40 minutes for a table inside by joining the waitlist.

So delicious! Our group came for dinner and drinks before we went to a show at 9:30 club. This was the perfect spot before a show. Not too bloated but definitely full! Our waitress was amazing, helped some people decide what to choose, and made sure they were happy with their choice. I ordered the shoyu and it was sooo good! The broth was so hearty; probably some of the best I've had. Even my husband who doesn't like ramen thought it was really good! And for those who are wondering why we went to a ramen spot if he doesn't like ramen...they have broth-less ramen! The guys in our group LOVED it. The waitress recommended they get an egg on the side too and make it creamy. Their bowls were sparkling clean after they ate. Definitely will come back! Solid ramen spot!

Prompt service. Knowledgeable bartender. Ordered the vegetarian dish with lotus root, etc.. nicely done but very small bowl for that price. Calamari was good. Couple of chewy pieces but batter was light and crisp. Saki recommendation was excellent! Got mango and green tea Mochi icecream - former was delish but latter was disappointing. And 20% gratuity added to a tab for ONE person - I am fine with this if I had been told up front. Can get steep with a large table... Good experience overall.

This was my first time back to Haikan after start of COVID. The food used to be special- incredibly flavorful and creative. Today everything was very mediocre (smashed cucumber, calimari, veggie ramen). Used to leave here anticipating next trip back. However, after today’s experience do not want to go back.

A great place for some food after a night of drinking with friends. The staff was friendly and treated us with hospitality and quick service. We made different orders between our group of 6 throughout the hour and a half we spent there, and the staff worked together to take orders and deliver food. We didn’t have to rely on one server, everyone helped everyone. Gratuity was included in the bill, but that’s how it should be done! I was happy to leave extra tip on top of that! We made a reservation for 6 of us at 9:30, we stayed until they closed at 11.

We had a wonderful time! The appetizers were fantastic. We both had the whiskey mule and martini and they were refreshing. The ramen broth was so flavorful! For dessert we had the strawberry mochi; chef's kiss. The music was really good, we couldn't stop swaying and moving our shoulders. 10/10 would go again

The ramen is delicious! So good. The appetizers were also very good. I should've gotten the rice beer instead of the Sapporo. It was delicious. The dessert - the custard - was excellent. The only things that weren't great were the loud racing cars (the restaurant can't help that) and the wobbly table - we moved and had a fine table. I love the Shio ramen so much. So buttery with a hint of the sea. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and made it a fun evening. Thanks for a great time.
