Gyu-Kaku - Topanga Canyon Ratings and Reviews
Unfortunately this place has changed. Some of their food items are different/no longer good, and some are altogether gone. The garlic noodles which used to be amazingly good are now just okay. The Harami as on the edge of spoiled. The avocado salad is still really good which is the only positive thing I can say about the food. The prices went up and the happy hour prices and choices are now pathetic All four of us decided that this was our last time dining here which is so sad because we used to really enjoy our Gyu-Kaku nights.
We scheduled at 7:45PM on a Tuesday night. We were greeted when we came in and seated right away which is great. However our table - is not really ours cause we have to share with the other couple and have the most awkward seats. I can’t even move my arm freely when I try to cook meat. The wait of food is ridiculous and I don’t how it can possibly take that long - for raw meat! The portion is really small and ordering is a pain cause one order is taking approximately 30 mins so we are scared to order more since we need to leave by 9. Overall it’s really not worth it for the portion of the food and service we received.
This location always has great people serving you and good cuts of meat but I will say they need to work on their equipment.
Several times they’ve had issues with starting the grill and they also need to work on maintenance as lights were out and this is happened in the past.
We picked a bad night. Who in their right mind goes to a good restaurant in a busy mall during holiday shopping season 😂. Fortunately we made reservations and were seated pretty quickly. Our server Jenn was excellent. She took great care of us amidst the chaos of the crowd. The food was very good and although it was like being at home (I did the cooking 😂) we had a great time. We will definitely return another night when it’s not so loud and crowded.
I definitely recommend a meal here.
My first time here for my grandson's birthday, which I noted to Open Table and repeated to the receptionist upon arrival. The noise level was distracting. Five of us were jammed into a very small table, given that the center of it was the grilling area. The food was fresh and our server was upbeat and personable, but food items were delivered to the table in such a haphazard way that no one could keep track of who ordered what. The bill was on par with much more upscale eateries. My grandson's birthday was never acknowledged. While the novelty of grilling your dinner might be fun for some, I will go elsewhere where someone cooks it for me in an atmosphere where I can hear the person talking across my table for the same price as I paid tonight. It's not for everyone.
We are foodies and always eating out. This day Gyu Kaku disappoint in the food a lot. Meat was super tough couldn't chew it. The food lacked flavor this day. I have no idea what happened or if there was new people in the kitchen but the food was not good. Also hostess all of the hostess we've been there lots of times have no charisma, have no sense of what good customer service is, we try to ignore it and just feel sorry for people like that but they should hire people that actually love their jobs and be enthusiastic and energetic. every time we go hostesses are in a bad mood, like they hate everyone there trying to get a table and making faces. horrible.
I love going to Gyu-Kaku! It is about the only restaurant I can think of where I feel like I got really good value for my money. There's lots of food choices and everything is delicious! I especially like the fried rice. It comes in a ceramic bowl and it's so hot, the rice gets crunchy. So good with everything!
We had a great time and service was excellent, but only our fire kept on going out. I would have to ask any server to stop and turn it back on again over and over again and after I learned what they were doing to get it working, I tried it myself several times too just to keep the fire going and that was annoying. Other than that, food was good, and our waitress was really sweet.
Service was ok, food was not bad, it's fun to BBQ without having to clean it.
I don't think we'll be back to this location though because it is just quite warm inside before we even start the BBQ, and it gets warmer as soon as you start.
We asked the server to switch our seats to the front which is not as warm, but even cold beer turn room temperature quite fast... Not ideal environment :/
It was Father's day and we've been here before on busy days and not so busy days. This is my boyfriend's favorite restaurant, but he was disappointed at how they catered to us. First of all our drinks took 20 minutes to get. My miso soup never came to me after 30 mintues of waiting and asking why it hasn't came only to find out the miso pot was down, as I was told. Our dumplings we ordered came out cold. Alcoholic beverages took another 20 minutes to get to us. We asked what took so long and the waitress told us the bartender was lagging it. And it wasn't even busy. We have came on busy days before and served us great, but our waitress was not having it. Giving an attitude, never checking on us. We had to ask 2 other waiters to give us some food and drinks. My boyfriend complained to the manager and the manager was helpful. He was awesome. But we weren't the only ones to complain. There were 2 other couples where we sat at who weren't happy about the service. We will be back, but hopefully not to service like that again. Overall the food is good, but that day was just not pleasing.
This is one of our favorite restaurants because of the interactive cooking. We always enjoy the food and atmosphere. However, this particular day we were not as happy as usual because the hostess was rushing us to get out for a party of 9 that was waiting. To be clear this was unacceptable and we let her know that. We also brought this to the attention if the waiter. At the end of the day it is not my issue that you overbooked. I will be rating appropriately on yelp as well.
This was my second visit to Gyu-Kaku at Topanga and I loved it again! Food was amazing, noise level was great because the mall and restaurant had just opened so it wasn't so loud nor a creepy dead silence in the air. I would recommened this for like birthdays, graduations, anniversary etc. because its fun and at the end you get to do some smores over the grill and ice cream to eat along with. Gyu-Kaku never disappoints!!
Everything was really good except their reservation procedures. If you are 5-10 minutes early, they will not seat you. They said i had a specific reservation time and they seat walk ins before that. When my reservation time came, the walkins they seated took all of the available tables and i had to wait another 15 minutes. As Seinfeld says, "They know how to take the reservation, but they don't know how to hold the reservation".
