Gyu-Kaku - San Mateo Ratings and Reviews
I like this place , and all my family is always happy to be here , but last time we got very very bad customer service, our waitress was very unprofessional, she mixed up our food with other table , didn’t bring the rest our order, and at the and she give us a totally wrong bill with double charge ! The rest of the people, who work there is very nice , good and hard working young people!
Services has improved. At least our waiter show up to our table for couple of times. He forgot couple of our ordered items. It delivered right away after we asked. It wasn’t a very busy day. We get our table on time with reservation ahead. Meat quality is average. The ramen got have bowl of soup. It will be great if they put more. Only concern is dirty restroom.
Food was good and our waitress was pleasant too, but I wish she could be more attentive. I asked for no dressing on my salad which was included in my lunch selection, and I was given a salad with dressing. I immediately notified our waitress who took it away but later brought me another salad with dressing on it. I didn’t bother to tell her again and tried to eat a little, but ended up giving my salad to my husband since he likes the dressing. I like my salad plain without any dressing, or with simply a dash of lemon juice or balsamic vinegar. My husband commented that the chef had already put dressing on all the salad, so our waitress probably couldn’t do anything about it. However, I still feel that we customers should be given the choice on whether we want dressing on our salad.
Good food, but service really sucks here. I have been here several times as we like the food. But the constant changing of servers throughout the course of one meal is ridiculous. Not only that, but they do not check in with you to see if you need anything. It also took almost thirty minutes to flag down the bill.
Wish they would improve their service here!
I love this place! We went for our anniversary and had a reservation. We ended up waiting a while, but didn't really mind. The manager comp'd our drinks anyway, very nice staff. We were very happy with the quality/amount of food. We got the Kobe Beef for two and love it!
One of the workers who was cleaning the table next to us splashed water on my friend's purse and her clothes without an apology, instead, he brought us a stack of napkins on the table. Besides, they wanted us to move to another table when we were still eating and drinking because they needed our table for the big group. I feel that was kind of rude.
Gyu-KaKu, San Mateo, has a terrible seating procedure/attitude. When it is busy, one has to wait even with one shows up on time with a reservation. Okay, I understand. When it is half empty, one has to wait because they "the section is closed". When five out of six show up on time with a 6:30pm reservation on a Thursday night while the sixth is parking, the five were made to wait until the sixth arrived after parking, while the restaurant is 60% full and the table is empty and ready. I don't understand. The attitude is just rude.
If one is hungry for Japanese Barbecue, I recommend that one try Guy-KaKu's much more polite and customer friendly competitor, Juban, in Burlingame.
Arrived on time for reservations at 5:30 P.M. on the Monday before July 4th. Every table was filled. Was the restaurant overbooked? We waited next to the host stand a bit more than 10 minutes to be seated. The place was packed with walk-in diners waiting inside and outside the entrance. After we were seated, service was uneven as we waited another 10 minutes before a server arrived to take our order. The vegetable side dishes (including the "assorted veggies" which we did not order) arrived 10 minutes before the appetizers were served. The marinated meats and rice bowls were delivered another 8 minutes later. The grilled asparagus and garlic spinach were surprisingly good. You have to turn the spinach quickly with the tongs to prevent burning on the grill grate. The assorted veggies included two button mushrooms, sliced trumpet mushrooms, exactly two thin slices of zucchini squash, two little shishito peppers, two cherry tomatoes, and a foil packet of CANNED corn to be warmed on the grill grate....definitely awkward and a challenge trying to eat individual canned corn niblets with chopsticks. The fried calamari had a nice crisp batter with a spicy dipping sauce. The pork gyoza were okay with a shoyu dipping sauce. The marinated yaki shabu beef and spicy pork were tasty. Our server checked in on us one time after the final delivery of the marinated meats. We had to ask for water later....We'll give this place another try - like on a non-holiday weekday when hopefully, they're not slammed, and perhaps the service might be better.
Used to come every weekend, and I can tell a trend of how the service here goes from good to bad. Now everything is as slow as possible. I had a reservation at 10 pm, and I didn't get water till 20 min after I sat. Till 10:45 pm all I got was a corn. No water was added and I had no mood to order dessert. Even checkout took 10 min. And this is not the first time I had such an experience. Definitely won't come every week like before.
