The food was amazing! The kalbi short rib is by far my favorite. The service was a bit slow since it was packed on Fri night but they were super nice and even comped my tea without prompting after I asked for it a couple of times. The only thing I wish they had were the exhaust hoods over the grills, all my clothes smelled like BBQ, but it was delicious and totally worth the load of laundry!
Terrible handling. We had a reservation at 7:45 pm on Saturday. The staff called us at 4:35 pm stated the cashier had some issue and could not accept cards, so it is cash only. We are ok with that. And at 7 pm another staff call us stated their order system has some issue so they will close the store and they want to cancel us. We were heading to the restaurant and was a gathering with our friends. We told her someone had called us earlier and we had prepared the cash for it. Is this the issue? Can we still go? The staff said she needed to ask the manager and hang up the phone. We called back and asked again. Get the same response; she needs to ask the manager and then hang up. It is very rude! We called again, and finally, another staff picked it up, and we asked to talk to the manager. The manager is the worst among all of the staff we spoke to. Nasty attitude and not trying to solve the problem but yell at us “ we have many calls need to call to cancel!” “I am new here, and I am trying to fix the mess here!” “What do you want from us?” Very poorly managed. And I am not surprised the staff hangs up my phone under this leadership. Awful experience, and I will never heading back.
We have had a challenging relationship with Gyu-Kaku since it opened several years ago. We have had some decent meals and some not so decent ones throughout the years but as the only Japanese style yakiniku which also happens to be a popular chain in Japan we used to enjoy we always "wanted" it to be great and have supported it for years.
Since the pandemic the place is a shell of itself and this was our first and surely will be our last trip to the Callowhill site.
Around the bar as you entered the restaurant they seemed to be using this area as an equipment storage area. I saw a colander sitting in a box as I went by. Also in another booth which most likely was non operational the employees had left all their clothes, belongings etc. rather than storing them somewhere away from customers.
The bathrooms were filthy even by train station standards. We arrived at opening and the floors were filthy, trash had not been emptied and there were even many toilet seats broken. Nothing like spending $100 on lunch in a restaurant you are too scared to use the bathrooms in. Maybe they will get cleaned the mop and a smelly bucket were still sitting near the bathroom but in the customer seating area.
Restaurant cleanliness which has never been great through the years has fallen way off, sticky floors and tables throughout, chipped wood, dirty windows etc.
We ordered our normally favorite appetizer the Tuna Volcano roll but were told the "fryers did not start up". Our waiter told us they could fry it in oil in a pot and rather than just say no thanks we went for it. Big mistake, the rice was fried so hard it was inedible and the tuna on top tasted as though it had sat in the fridge too long.
My wife normally goes just for for the Japanese draft beer they always had on tap. When we tried to order they alerted us they "have not had draft beer" for months. Perhaps it's time to update the huge picture menu which shows beautiful looking draft beer the
This place rocks
The restaurant was pretty good. We went in during the early afternoon, we were seated almost immediately. The value of the pre-fixed choices were ok. Wish there was a "make your own" combo so you could choose different combinations and still maintain to a budget & leave feeling full.
I love the manager she was so nice and caring and so helpful ! The new waiters she hired they was awesome as well ! Keep up the great work ! I even liked I was a little late and I didn’t get rushed as well ! Love it there !
Food was great. But the restaurant was a little smokey - the fan may not be working as well??
Perfect for a small group of friends or maybe like a third date!
The food is great. Rice came to late but our waiter didn’t count that in our menu. Great choice for a weekend night.
My experience was not as I had remembered pre-COVID. Went for early Saturday dinner. Dinner menu was not current. Apparently more extensive menu online. Draft beer was not working. Ordered seaweed salad and was told they were sold out. No soup spoons or cutlery. Was given prewrapped plastic knife, fork, spoon and napkins that you get with take out. We were told that this was due to COVID. We’ve dined at other restaurants and have always been given proper cutlery. Overall the service was very slow but, I realize that they may be understaffed and our server was very polite and working hard. Unfortunately a disappointing experience this visit.
The taste and meat texture went downhill, it used to be very good. Service is ok, our waiter was good, but some others need more training, for instance, when we just arrived and was waiting for the person to check us in and show us the table but he was not there(maybe busy), two waitresses at the door could’ve greeted us and told us that someone would be there a little bit. But instead, they stared at us and walked away, we were all just standing there and trying to figure out what was going on. And food quality, idk what they did in terms of marinating the beef and pork, they are not at all balanced, too sweet in most cases.
It was hair in my food, too hot, and bad service. Waited an hour to get service and a hour to get check. They also gave us the wrong bill
First family night out since covid. We liked that it seemed they were limiting tables etc….. and of course the food was great!!
I’ve been to several locations of Gyu-Kaku and this place is the worst. It needs some work. The seats are worn out, the paint is chipping and the AC hasn’t been fixed for weeks. Eating over a hot stove when it’s 90 degrees in the restaurant is not a good experience. The bathroom was dirty.
The staff was very attentive but asking these guys to work in these conditions is not right.
The food and service was very good but the place in general was not very hygien. The bathroom smell weird and a little bit dirty. The dining area is not very clean as well.
Nyree the bartender deserves a huge raise! Angel on earth!
This was a great experience. I enjoyed cooking my own food over the fire! And the rice I got to accompany my main dish was soooo good! I’ll be visiting again!
It was nice experience

Me and my Girlfriend one year anniversary
The meal and experience was very good. My only issue was that when I went to use the restroom to change my son’s diaper, there was no changing table accommodations. Unfortunately, I had to change my son on the floor.
We walked and had to wait for 10 minutes after we talked to the host before we were actually seated
Due to beef shortages, they were out of several of the dishes. Our server told us they would swap in others that were in stock. He then had to be reminded to bring the swapped offerings. He also forgot to bring some additional dishes for which we had paid and did not realize it at the time.
Also- we had two tables- 1 grill did not function at all, the other only partially.
Food flavors are great, experience is fun, but watch out for subpar service and not getting all you paid for.
Our Father’s Day lunch was terrific!
Excellent food, great service- more than one waiter/waitress stopped by to check on everything. Great menu bundle specials for everyone.
Went to one in Toronto and New York City. Good services and food. This one is not up to the level of the others. Food is mediocre. Service is minimal. Not enjoyable in any standard.
We had a great experience and amazing food! John the manager was outstanding customer service 100%— delicious food and clean! Totally recommend this place :)
Great time for my first BBQ experience! Our server gave us great instructions and yummy recommendations.
nice place but need to wait for half hour to get the food
Must try amazing flavors!! Everything was good that we tried!
It was amazing honestly all around! Our server was so friendly and even sat us when we arrived. The food was absolutely wonderful and we will definitely be back :)
Went for Mother’s Day! Food was good as usual however they were having issues with the grills. It kept burning out.
Great time and our waiter/ waitress (we had one in training) they were both great
Great restaurant and dining experience. The food portion is sufficient and good meat. The staff was helpful and service was great.
Will definitely go again
We love this place .
Food and Drinks never disappoint!!!
No all you can eat. Service was a little slow. But overall it was an enjoyable meal
Two words...Shina & Valeria. If these two weren’t there this place would be a COVID casualty.
ALWAYS AMAZING!!! staff is always nice and helpful food is great
