Gyu-Kaku - Midtown Ratings and Reviews
Second time's the charm? :) It was still good. Due to the energetic noise levels at lunchtime, it was hard to hear the servers explain the sauces, cooking time etc, the BBQ restaurant may consider advising the servers to adjust their voices accordingly. Otherwise, the food is great. The mille crepes is to die for!
I went here with my boyfriend and out 2 friends for his birthday and we did the $80 3 course meal which was amazing! the food was great. Only thing I personally think this place is for two people at a time not good for groups, just because the grill in front of you is small and it takes a little bit of time to cook the meats. especially when your starving like we were it was torture lol... but hey a group is still good I would personally just like it for me and my bf. The mai tah drink was ehh Ive had better, I couldnt even finish it I had to force myself, and I dont have to force myself to drink anything alcoholic..the server was nice attentive changed our grills when needed, its very romantic very dimmed lighting..
I wanted someplace fun and I wasn't disappointed. Who doesn't love BBQing indoors?! The food was surprisingly good but the meat kept sticking to the BBQ grill so they need to give the tables individual oil to brush on or they need to switch to ceramic grills. I would go again just for the fun of it.
My group had a delicious assortment of meats to grill ourselves, salmon, salad and cooked food. The waitstaff was very pleasant and helpful ( I especially liked that they split our dishes into separate portions for the three of us!). Haven't been to other locations but this one has a lovely, tranquil decor in a convenient mid-town location. I will probably return to try their special seasonal menu.
The communal cooking aspect is fun, and the raw materials (food) is fresh & well-seasoned...so the results are tasty. It's a nice place and the service was fast, efficient and friendly. Note...if you're not going with one of the specials, it's pretty pricey...so look at those. We got a special for four for about $88, and then with three drinks, three or four sides and two desserts, practically doubled the tab - which took it from the realm of "great deal" to fair price, but not exceptional - just don't get caught by surprise when the tab comes. In fairness, you spend a lot of time in this type of restaurant (a little over two hours in our case), so the table turnover is slow, and they do need to make money.
This is a fun place...not fine dining but entertaining. They kept brining more food before we had a chance to eat appetizers; so we felt rushed. And it's a bit expensive, but consider that you're paying for the entertainment of cooking your own food...if you find that entertaining.
Went 2 couples, had a nice dinner. Food is great. Then the bill arrives. Two men give their CCs to split the check and a few minutes later the waitress comes back to tell us that both cards declined. The error is UNABLE TO INITIALIZE.We told her that its the machine error, not card error. Manager arrived, told us in front of everyone how cards aren't good. So the 2 women gave our cards. Manager arrives saying these are bad also. The chance of 4 cards of 4 people declining are astronomical. He asked if we have cash but we didnt. Eventually he came back and said that the machine isnt working and that we should wait while they fix it. They could have at least given us free drinks or dessert while we waited almost half an hour!
I can't say enough; Gyu-Kaku is one of my favorite places to go. The food is great. Recently we had pork belly, short ribs, prime rib, duck, the assorted veggies and the SMORES (and of course saki bombs).
This place is great. I mean, how can you go wrong with cooking your own marinated meat? Seriously, this is one of my greatest enjoyments in life. I have been here a handful of times and will continue to go back. Great for all ages!!!
Went for late lunch. Food as usual was excellent. But the service and the timing of the food delivery was off for some reason that day. We had to wait for about 20-30 minutes just to have one of the entrees to be delivered. Luckily, I was busy catching up with a friend that it didn't matter as much.
Maybe they were short-handed that day? Maybe the cook was new? Maybe the staff was changing?
I still like Gyu-kaku. But I suppose, I have always expected good service and good food from them.
I have been here twice now, and it definitely lived up to my memories of the first time! My first trip was a date with my now-fiance for his birthday on a recommendation from a friend, and it was delicious. This time was to celebrate his new job and our engagement, and it was even better this time. The menu is massive, the food is incredible, the service is great, and the experience is unforgettable! I am a healthy eater, and often I have trouble finding just one dish, but here, I found enough for numerous visits, and the desserts are amazing enough to make me indulge :).
I was here on a Saturday with a friend for lunch and got seated next to the window. Although there wasn't much going on at the streets downstairs, it's still nice to have a view. Lunch specials are available everyday and they are at very reasonable price. Portions are not big but they are quite filling. My favorite ended up to be the strip steak, despite the fact that I had high hopes for Kalbi.
Great place to have a unique taste of BBQ, Asian style! Though referred to as a restaurant serving Japanese barbecue, it serves types of Asian sets. Unless you mind doing a bit of grilling yourself, this is a good place to talk over a lunch. Not loud as other Japanese restaurants in the neighborhood over lunch. And do try the s'mores!
We usually opt to go here during their happy hours which on weekdays are really early or really late but on weekends they have a GREAT almost all day one that falls right during brunch time. Quality meats, excellent sides and yummy desserts. Their drinks are pretty good too so if you're looking to imbibe they've got some great specials. Even their non-alcoholic drinks are tasty! Great place to get your grill on.
This was our 4th time - one for each our stays in New York. We keep on coming back to this place for a reason. The food is great, it is fun to do your own cooking and the service is efficient. And they will not rip you off. One thing this time was that our contact waiter only showed his face at the arrival - what purpose does a contact waiter have then?
Despite the bit of cheesiness going on here (all staff stop to simultaneously greet you in Japanese, the big adverts for specials at the table) Gyu-Kaku has a lot going for it. It's casual enough to have a laid back atmosphere, but high class enough to be serious about their food. Marinades are always done consistently well, and the wait staff is always considerate enough to make sure you're taken care of. Follow their cooking time suggestions for perfectly done BBQ.
Oh yeah, and go for happy hour 3-6pm for great deals on food and drinks. Better not, don't...I don't want to spoil it for myself!
This is a fun place to go to. It's like a Japanese/Korean BBQ fusion place. There are lots of different types of food to choose from that you can grill. They also have cooked food, ie. bibimbop and ramen. The Happy Hour prices are more worth it for the amount of food they serve for each dish.
Hadn't been at this Gyukaku location in a while and the overall quality seems to have declined. The cuts (karbi short ribs for instance) used to be better. The Sirloin was good, but as I remember it you didn't have to order the more expensive cuts to have a decent meal.
Waited 10 minutes for a waiter to acknowledge that we even existed and the place was not busy at all. Once we finally ordered the food took 35 minutes to arrive. I will let this pass because my wife and I have been loyal customers at the midtown and the east village location for about 6 years but if this happens again I will make sure that the midtown location will not get our recommendations.
This is the first time we've been to this place and the experience was amazing. Tho the portion was small but it is a lot. It is a bit pricey for such small portion. The service was impeccable. The green tea layer cake was to die for. I will definitely come back again with friends.
