Gyu-Kaku - Kapiolani Ratings and Reviews
It was my uncle's first visit to Gyu-kaku & we wanted him to experience the AYCE dining because he can EAT! He really enjoyed it so we were all very happy to start the New Year right. We go with the middle range AYCE menu. Joe was a great server who always checked on us & kept our orders coming.
We really enjoyed the all-you-can-eat option. We tried the middle priced AYCE & Dylan was a great server. Even with challenging customers on the table next to us, he kept this cool & gave great service thru the meal. Props to him! We also like their app where you earn points for dining.
My recent trip was for my birthday with my husband. I made a reservation about two weeks ahead of time, in case it was busy during the week, and I'm glad I did! We arrived on time for the reservation but it still took about 20 minutes to seat us, which was pretty disappointing. I took my sister and her husband when they came to visit recently and we had the same wait time without a reservation. The food was excellent, as usual. I wasn't a huge fan of our waitress but she seemed a little busy so I don't think it was anything more than a little stress. Overall, I'd suggest anyone to come here. It is a fun dinner experience with all-you-can-eat dinner options that start at $30 ($35 on Friday & Saturday). They also have hot sake, which is always a good thing!
The vegetarian bibimbap did not have much vegetables and the one with the beef did not have much beef in it. So it would be hard to recommend vegetarians or vegans to the restaurant. Our server Ai- was excellent and so was the Apple Saketini.
The dinner for 2 at $60 was worth the price.
I think it’s a fun place for young people and young families.
The food was amazing as always! We did one of the All-you-can-eat menus. Our server was so informative and helped us out when we got indecisive. The only issues: There was a little bit of a delay getting our table even with the reservation. Also, 2 employees kept trying to get us to leave even though we were still under the 90 minute time limit.
It was pretty busy on Saturday night so our server was busy tying to accommodate all of the tables. We had enough time to eat and get full and she let us stay a little longer because the service was slow. Overall, it was really nice to have reservations and be seated very fast.
Had thanksgiving dinner here, something my fam usually does because we’re Asian and not real big on turkey. I also like a lot of meat variety. The $40 all you can eat menu was great, lots of quality choices. Our server Joe was very attentive and helpful. Service is a big deal for me, having come from a fam of restaurant operators, and I’d be more than happy to have Joe at one of our restaurants. Polished about 25 plates of main dishes plus about 10 starters, a few veggies, 5 desserts and a pitcher of beer. We def got our moneys worth, plus no thxgiving prep or cleanup! Make sure to download their app if you dine there often for the free food. Wife kicking me bc I forgot to scan my receipt so didn’t get the $140 worth of points. Oh well, another excuse to go back again soon.
Came to celebrate a birthday with some good friends. Didn't mention the occasion to the staff, so didn't expect anything. The service was very punctual, with frequent check backs and requests were answered quickly (like changing the grill, etc). It was a busy time, so the attention to our table was even more appreciated.
I enjoyed the experience more than I thought I would. I cook a lot at home so the idea of cooking my own food whrn going stills baffles me. However, I enjoyed most aspects. We were never instructed on how to control the heat, and didn't know where the control was at first, so our flame got a little out of control at one point. Once we figured it out it was fine. I would go again for the Lychee Splash. Great drink.
The overall experience was a good one. A La Carte items were a little steep and the portions seemed a bit small, but the choices are great and the quality of the meat and veggies are nice. The service felt rushed and our server needed a break because she was running around all over the place and apologizing constantly. Food came out quickly and the overall experience was fun
Placed a reservation days in advance but still didn't manage to get in the restaurant 20 past the reserve time. The meat that was served looked like scraps in the way that they were cut and plated. Granted it was late in the night, I expected more for paying the price we did. Not to mention it was for my brother's graduation and early mother's day get together. Server seemed to be the only one working; kitchen staff did not exist that night.
Every time we make reservations, we end up waiting about 20-45 minutes after our reservation time. This has happened about 5 times. The excuse is always because they're busy. If they're busy every night, Gyukaku should adjust its procedures for accommodating reservations within a reasonable time. Service once we are seated is always good though.
The number one thing I noticed was the great customer service. Our server was amazing. I think his name was Irie? He made my boyfriend and I feel comfortable. He had some great jokes too! We decided to try the Ultimate All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) which is $45 per person. A wide variety of items to choose from. He told us his favorite item on the menu so we could try it out. The only problem I have is the price of the AYCE. The rule is we can order an unlimited amount of appetizers, but we can only order two types of meat per person. The amount of meat given to us is small compared to other AYCE places. If the server is busy, we cannot order more meat within the time limit to make it worth the price. In all, Gyu-kaku could either increase the amount of meat on the plate or reduce the price of the Ultimate AYCE to $35 per person and the Premium AYCE to $25 per person. Honestly, I would go back for the Ultimate AYCE if the price was $35 per person.
