Gyu-Kaku - Edmonton, AB
Great food, good atmosphere, reasonably priced! You cannot ask for more! Oh and the staff were extremely friendly!
Ok for the amount of food and price. Everything was heavily seasoned so might be a turn off for some. Nothing special that you couldn't get at Korean BBQ Definately a once in a while place.
Host had me doing laps for a table confusing and frustrating, the server was very good, the food was above average in taste, price was a little high for what we got but the experience was positive, I probably won’t be coming back anytime soon but It was a good date
Tasty! Not expensive!
We put in reservation on 13, 2019 at 8:15pm.
We arrived 2 minutes late and we were hoping to already be seated by this time. We waited 30 minutes to be seated. This is unacceptable and irresponsible. Please train your staff to ensure that reservations are put as a priority.
I’ve been to other Gyu-Kaku locations and never have felt So irritated and frustrated within the first 5 minutes I’ve walked in a restaurant. First of all, your host - I understand that while you were training your hosts and servers, that you want them to be loud as they welcome guests into the restaurant. I’ve had the same experience in other locations, and I never minded it at all. It gave me that “oh we’re kind of in Japan” type of vibe. However, in the location and the way the restaurant is set up, when your host yells, he literally blows our ears out. He should NOT be yelling in the staircase as in literally amplifies his already VERY loud voice.
Another concern would be with the way this host handled the situation. I understand that it’s a Friday night, and it’s super busy, but this host would constantly express their frustration publicly AND loudly for all customers to hear. This isn’t a retail store, nor a pub. This is a restaurant. People want to eat their food in peace and not have an employee yell across the room and speak to us very obnoxiously whenever we’d ask a question.
The food was great, don’t get me wrong. But please don’t expect a lot of us to come back to this kind of atmosphere because it was horrible and irritating.
A paying customer that just wants to eat good food in peace.
Had the same server as las time, the service is getting better compared to the last time experience.
Two must try items on menu: Bacon chips and premium beef tongue.
Love this place and food!! Only minor issue was it took some time to be seated after making a reso and the waitress forgot 2 things we orders on separate occasions. They are just getting going though, so overall we loved it!
Took extra 37 minutes to wait for a table.Should not let one to made reservations if this is the case for every parties who arrive on time.
Food and service were fine
Everything was great! We will go back.
After order our meal, we wait for half an hour until they turn the stove and another 15 mins to serve the dish.
This is my second visit. I don't suggest going Friday at lunch. It is very busy and service was slower.
It was pretty good, great value and food!
Tried Gyu-Kaku for dinner. Despite having a confirmed reservation, we weren't seated for about 15-20 minutes after checking in at the front. Customer reception (eg: queuing those with reservations vs. walk-ins) is an area that could use some work.. seemed chaotic. I still recommend that you make reservations to avoid an even longer wait.
I've tried other "grill-your-own-food" places and I did like how Gyu-Kaku's grills were better ventilated. We tried the $65 Meat Lover's BBQ Course and steamed chili dumplings. For 2 people, this was a hefty amount of food. We really liked the salad. The chicken karaage was average.
The cuts of meats that were served were very flavourful and mostly tender. Of the meats, I preferred the savoury (less sweetened) cuts of meats more.. They also provide 3 dipping sauces (ie: ponzu, sweet and spicy) at your table and these were good. Noticed they also offer gluten-free dipping sauce & marinade options, which is great.
Grilling was easy and fast. Service was pretty good considering how busy it was.
All in all, this was a good dining experience.
The food was really flavorful and delicious! Our server was pretty good. Not overly attentive but he was friendly. They seemed a bit disorganized and not ready to go at 5pm (our reservation was at 515). Overall though we'd definitely go back! The food was good!
We had a reservation at 2:45 PM, but we were not seated until after 3:00 PM.
Our server was good and the food was what we expected.
Really different experience. Excellent food and great value.
Food was good, but could have been paced a little better. Several appetizers for one of the fixed meals for two came out at the same time. The meats were tasty, but quite chewy, especially the filet. The cocktail I had was nothing special. What can I say, it’s a chain.
Everything was excellent except the service. Hopefully it’s just growing pains because they just opened but the server forgot to order a few of our items. Our table didn’t have chopsticks on it and we had to ask 3 different servers to get some as our fried foods sat there getting cold.
Food selection is great, the marinate of each meat/seafood was amazing! Ambiance is nice and i like that it was a smokeless grill - you don’t smell like the food you had after eating there. Service was alright, i had mentioned that it was my son’s birthday but they ignored it. But overall it was good and would love to go back again.
Food was bland. Couldn't understand server had to ask multiple times for water and drinks. Food took a while to come out. The worst part was the food was bland. You were out of seaweed, some of the drinks we wanted.
Our reservation was at 9pm but they took longer to sit us. The food was amazing but the service could have been way better. They waited until the end of our meal to bring the rice. Too many people and not enough staff. The bartender was friendly tho. I'll probably give it another try when they are not busy.
Very slow service. We booked the table but we still waited for 30min for a table without apologizes or any compensation. I would suggest if the restaurant cannot handle that many customers, please remove some reservation slot on Opentable.
Overall pretty good!! One thing I would suggest is have our server make sure the guests has everything they need before coming to the table and coming by more often to check on how things are going. But food and service were pretty good though, and great attitude; you can tell they truly wanted to take care of us! Oh one more thing, make sure you have enough chopsticks and beer glasses! It’s awkward for servers and bartenders to have to explain these inventory shortages to customers. But seriously, pretty good restaurant!
On arrival we had a really awkward welcome. The gal that first tried to assisted chuckled as i said hello only to inform that the table we booked was still occupied and that the occupants were not going any where any time soon. She said it would be a long wait! She giggled as she said this. I did not appreciate this.
Another host came by - he was much more professional and made efforts to get us onto a table right away. We were brought to a table that was still soaking wet from it being wiped down (they should have had us wait a few more mins while the we table and furniture dried out)!!
Zoe served us and was great. I found some inflexibility while trying to order. I also notice quality difference from items. I visited a Gyu Kaku in Orlando 3 weeks ago and their garlic mushrooms were of a better prepared quality. I felt like ours just had mushrooms wrapped in foil and chunks of garlic thrown in.
Rest was ok.
A fun night out with friends and good food. Service wasn't as good as the first visit but would definitely go back.
Food is great and an amazing value. We had lots of fun and enjoyed a new fun dining experience
Our server was super nice and informative about our food. The food was absolutely delicious and filling. However they ran out of all ice cream flavors except vanilla and offered us smores for dessert but didn't have the skewers for it. Overall an enjoyable experience. Will come back!!
They took a while to seat us. The waitress never came by to refill our drinks, change our grill, or ask if we wanted dessert. She brought our bill without us asking before we got to order our dessert. Very bad service!
Great restaurant! Lunch specials are a very good price! Recommend upgrading the rice to the stone bowl bimbimbap(?). Interior is also very beautiful.
Nice place, great food. Highly recommended, will go back again
The server was new, the service was terrible for today compared to the last wonderful experience.
Good value, quality of food was good, service was friendly and responsive. We will go back many times.
The service here needs work. We had a reservation and our table was not ready, the overbearing host insisted they needed more time to clean it several times. We didn't have a problem with waiting but he kept announcing it. When we got seated the table wasn't really clean, the tongs were not replaced and there was still food on the table. The bottles were covered in sauce. When we ordered sake the bottle was sealed and the server didn't even offer to fill our cups. Just put it on our table and left. We also got our sake after our appetizers arrived. The servers were not attentive, you had to flag them down but they were friendly. We had to ask for refills and grill replacements. Portions here are conservative for the recommended people they advise.
However despite the service the food was delicious! Really great flavors and loved the sauces. The meat was well marinated! Hopefully with time the experience will improve here.
Great food and a fun time. Really good value for the price as well
Overall my experience wasn’t so bad, the speed of service is what killed it . We were seated upstairs and that was great but there was literally no server upstairs . We wanted to order more food and rice, we waited 5 minutes for a server to come , knowing that it took that long to get a bowl of rice ... we didn’t want to order more food .
Service is good - the waitress is very attentive to our requests. Food was okay, the portion sizes are very small compared to what is shown on the pictures.
Gyukaku seems to be the hottest ticket in town right now. I made a reservation for 9:00pm and unfortunately our group of 4 waited 45 mins to be seated at a table. No problem, we enjoy each others company. In the meantime, we chose to sit at the bar and have a drink. They have a wonderful selection of Japanese whiskeys as well as original cocktails plus some interesting spins on some traditional favourites (adding Sriracha & pickle juice to Caesars) that were quite tasty. When we were seated, our server was knowledgeable and friendly in guiding us through the process of what we could expect from the experience as we were all first timers for Japanese BBQ. We decided on doing one of their combos (the samurai combo??) mentioned in the menu and it was good value for how much food we received. Some notable items included the beef brisket, the filet mignon, the chicken thighs, beef noodles served in a stone bowl, and oddly enough, we all loved the salad we were served. To heighten the experience, included in the combo were appetizers (Karaage chicken, edamame, salad, among others) and dessert (choice between s'mores or ice cream) and all were delicious. In the end, before spending money on drinks, we all paid ~$50/person with a tip included in that sum. Gyukaku does a great job when it comes to educating patrons on what to expect from a Japanese BBQ experience as well as executing when it came to service and the quality of the food, but within our group, we discussed that a place like this could potentially benefit from instituting a 2.5 hr time limit on stays to ensure that customers turn over at a fast enough rate to avoid long wait times, especially during peak dinner times on Friday and Saturday. That being said, it won't deter me from coming back again hopefully sometime in the near future. :)
Highly recommend this place. Amazing experience and excellent food. Worth every penny!
We weren’t too sure what to expect but the experience of grilling your own marinated meats and veggies was fun. The negatives were that our calamari arrived cold, the server was inexperienced and our grill had one side hot and the other ineffective.
