Gyu-Kaku - East Village Ratings and Reviews
Food was great. But the server was horrible. The table was not big enough for 8 ppl; he never came by to ask if everything was okay nor did anyone come change the grill plate once. Never have I experienced such bad service at gyu kaku. Very disappointed as a regular.
Gyu Kaku is an excellent place to go for a casual, but fun, night out. I often take my partner there on dates, and the tables are great for groups. It's super fun to be able to cook your own food at the table- talking over some grilling steak is what makes Gyu Kaku such a great place for dates and friends/family nights out. It is on the expensive side, especially for a student like me, but considering the quality of the food and how much you get, I would say that the price is fair. The steak is amazing, with lots of options, and their Spicy Tuna Tacos are excellent! I would definitely suggest checking out Gyu Kaku if you're looking for a unique dining experience, with excellent food.
First I was told the burners were not working and that I could wait if I wanted to (I had a reservation) The manager then instructs the hostess to seat us all the way in the back in a corner....Did I mention I passed the main dining area which was sparsely filled with young Asian diners?
Btw, the only other patrons in the area we were seated was another black couple.
I won’t be dining at that Gyu-Kaku (34 Cooper Sq) or any other location ever.
Food was great and the experience was even better. Fun to grill the food right at your table. The waiter brought us a few wrong dishes and didn’t bring us everything we ordered but it got corrected in the end. I just wish they did a better job of explaining the menu since it was our first time there. Overall, a great experience! Thank you.
Gyu Kaku is always a fun time. The experience is slipping a bit - I recall years ago when the restaurants had a cleaner, nicer feel. Some of the restaurants, like the Beverly Hills location, need to be gutted, scrubbed and rebuilt. This one on Cooper Square has seen better days as well but it hasn't reached the stage of torn seat cushions or gum under the table.
As for their meat preparation and selection, it's always great. I just wish they would have served the Bibimbop in the hot stone bowl like they used to. It's always better with a little crunch to it.
We always come here for Japanese BBQ. Thus far for the price it's great. The drinks are always awesome and they're consistent the the 3 we've been to ( flushing [ has more veggies for any vegetarians out there], midtown 53rd and Cooper sq). Their happy hours are the one of these best too.
Maybe it was a different time and crew but service was horrible and the new menu takes away the better options they once had. I was a frequent diner but I don’t know if I will be going back anymore. Such a shame. They should stick with the old saying, don’t fix what’s not broken.
Fantastic restaurant for everyone, experience Japanese/Korean BBQ diners and first timers. Staff was helpful, and the meat is of a very high quality. In addition, it's just a whole lot of fun to cook things in front of you like that. Other menu items are also good, but main event is the meat. We fed 6 using a meal meant for two and only got 2 extra things.
I have been going here for years, but their new management is terrible! They did not honor our reservation (we had to wait 40 min) and it was so crowded in the waiting area that we were constantly being pushed. Once we were finally seated, we were served MOLDY food twice! Their excuse the second time was that “all of it is like that”. They have also changed the menu and raised prices. When I complained to various employees throughout the night, they all encouraged me to write an email to their new management because even they were unhappy. STAY AWAY!
Good food and friendly ambiance (there were multiple birthday parties thrown here), but our grill was faulty and hot oil constantly splattered towards us. It actually got on my face TWICE, and I was trying to call the server to do something but they were hard to reach. It’s a legitimate safety hazard and they should check the grill to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
This was such an amazing experience, I came here for my anniversary with my boyfriend and it took a bit of convincing to get him to go but it was worth it! We did make a reservation and we did have to wait for our table for about 15-20minutes but the experience was worth the wait! It is a noisy place but it is still romantic and personal. I definitely recommend coming here for special occasions or just to have dinner the food is amazing!!!
We arrived at 8pm on Saturday evening. We had to wait only a short tim despite the businessmen of the restaurant. The menu is geared for everyone. You can choose a little or a lot. Great for sharing! Quality of the food was terrific. Th service was spot on. All in all a fun time.
