Gyu-Kaku - East Village Ratings and Reviews
Went here for valentines day. The food was really yummy and you can tell that the meat was fresh. Although pricey, the experience was worth it. The waiters were very helpful and taught you how to cook the meats properly if you didn't know how to already. The drinks were really yummy and we are excited to come back for the happy hour cocktails which are half off.
My boyfriend and I always find ourselves coming back here for date night and we never regret it . We do always wait a bit when we have reservations but never for long. We always order something different and always enjoy it, the waitress we had was Oy and she was so nice and sweet she even explained some Japanese phrases they say which I thought was really cool, she changed the grill after each meat we grilled and kept checking in on us, I really liked her service. It’s definitely noisy but it’s a popular place and is expected
Unfortunately my experience at Gyu Kaku was not good. The food tasted good, cooking the meat on the grill was fun and it was very inexpensive. BUT both my boyfriend and I got extremely sick before even making it home that evening. Last time we ate at Gyu Kaku we did not feel well after either but thought we just ate and drank a lot. This time was pure proof that unfortunately we got sick because it is CHEAP FOOD. The pain in my stomach, I cant even describe. Steak for 6 dollars, we honestly should have known. I would not recommend Gyu Kaku to anybody unless you are just going to drink at Happy Hour. The cheap price is not worth the stomach pain. I will not be returning to Gyu Kaku and I am warning you now!
I love this place and go back many times. The turnaround time for server is quite rapidly, we do not see the usual faces anymore. There is a mixture in the crew, some are very nice and efficient and alert, while some just provide the standard with no wow factors.
However, we will give them the time to master the place and provide excellent service on our next visits. Maybe at the end of the day, the technician will check out the burner to ensure fire will distribute evenly not just on one side only. Opening the rim does not solve the problem.
We will be back as this is our favorite place for gathering!
Food was great. But the server was horrible. The table was not big enough for 8 ppl; he never came by to ask if everything was okay nor did anyone come change the grill plate once. Never have I experienced such bad service at gyu kaku. Very disappointed as a regular.
Gyu Kaku is an excellent place to go for a casual, but fun, night out. I often take my partner there on dates, and the tables are great for groups. It's super fun to be able to cook your own food at the table- talking over some grilling steak is what makes Gyu Kaku such a great place for dates and friends/family nights out. It is on the expensive side, especially for a student like me, but considering the quality of the food and how much you get, I would say that the price is fair. The steak is amazing, with lots of options, and their Spicy Tuna Tacos are excellent! I would definitely suggest checking out Gyu Kaku if you're looking for a unique dining experience, with excellent food.
First I was told the burners were not working and that I could wait if I wanted to (I had a reservation) The manager then instructs the hostess to seat us all the way in the back in a corner....Did I mention I passed the main dining area which was sparsely filled with young Asian diners?
Btw, the only other patrons in the area we were seated was another black couple.
I won’t be dining at that Gyu-Kaku (34 Cooper Sq) or any other location ever.
Food was great and the experience was even better. Fun to grill the food right at your table. The waiter brought us a few wrong dishes and didn’t bring us everything we ordered but it got corrected in the end. I just wish they did a better job of explaining the menu since it was our first time there. Overall, a great experience! Thank you.
Gyu Kaku is always a fun time. The experience is slipping a bit - I recall years ago when the restaurants had a cleaner, nicer feel. Some of the restaurants, like the Beverly Hills location, need to be gutted, scrubbed and rebuilt. This one on Cooper Square has seen better days as well but it hasn't reached the stage of torn seat cushions or gum under the table.
As for their meat preparation and selection, it's always great. I just wish they would have served the Bibimbop in the hot stone bowl like they used to. It's always better with a little crunch to it.
We always come here for Japanese BBQ. Thus far for the price it's great. The drinks are always awesome and they're consistent the the 3 we've been to ( flushing [ has more veggies for any vegetarians out there], midtown 53rd and Cooper sq). Their happy hours are the one of these best too.
