Gyukaku is a chain. Anywhere else is fine but really shoddy and poor in Boston. The fire kept on going out at our table and the servers and managers insisted it was fine. They refused to change our table because they claimed other open tables were reserved. We couldnt' eat our food and they didn't acknowledge or compensate us for our troubles. Really bad.
Arrived an hour early and got seated an hour early; amazing given how popular the restaurant is. It's a Japanese barbeque spot and they usually serve high quality cuts. Today they were a little ragged and our server seemed to forget we were there but it was overall a fine experience. I've been here a dozen times and love it; I wish it were cleaner (I'm a germaphobe. Raw meat eeks me out) but it's a well maintained restaurant with mostly friendly staff. Their ramen and filet mignon are great.
I had been to Gyu-kaku many times, usually i had fun and feel it's worth the money, but this time, on a date with my wife for lunch was not a happy one. the grill keep going out , 30 minutes and goes out 5 times. pretty much food was not cooked nicely and we just keep wasting time to get them to come back and start the grill back up over and over again, until i finally had asked to change table (this should have been offered after second time it goes out) the guy that came over to fix the grill had some attitude issue as if we're a huge inconvenience to him. we end up being the one that's apologizing for changing the table. No manager came and apologize for the experience. by the time this was fixed and table was changed, we already felt like we don't want to eat anymore. Finished up our meal and left (we had done the all you can eat 45 bucks a person, and you can imagine we didn't eat up to what 45 dollar worth per person since we spend most of the time waiting on fire and grill to heat up again), This time totally NOT worth it. I didn't even want to finish my beer and so we paid and left... it's a huge let down. we probably wouldn't want to return again any time soon. at least not on a celebration date with my wife, that was our first meal of the day and turns out made our whole day unhappy.

Bar service was terrible. This is absolutely a beer and wine only kind of place, cocktails took 45 minutes to get to our table and then didn't have any ice in them! Manhattans were also served in mason jars, so it looked like hardly any drink. I guess they don't have rocks glasses? When we did switch to wine and beer, we ordered a bottle of wine, which they didn't even pour for us. Just put it on the table and left.
Food was good and plentiful, just don't go here hoping for a nice drink with your dinner.
The food was served at really slow pace even though their all-you-can eat option had 90 min cutoff. We could have eaten a lot faster and possibly more if they served the food faster. Their food is not even cooked so I don't know why it took a long time to prepare.
This was my third visit to Gyu-Kaku and once again I am impressed with the food quality and the kindness of the staff. I had to add more people to our reservations and when I called the restaurant about this, the staff were incredibly kind and understanding. Last time they ran out of several items and each of those items was replaced with something equally delicious. My personal favorites are the spicy tuna volcano and the addicting cabbage. I am definitely planning on coming back here!
The food was surprisingly good value for the price; especially as the reputation was that it was on the pricier side of restaurants. Make sure to get one of the combos; I recommend the Surf N Turf combo, which makes sure that you will be constantly eating and constantly enjoying the experience.
The food is great, very particular style of cuisine, so not much variety if you are looking for anything not-BBQ or not ramen or fried rice. I love the pork toro there - haven't seen that option anywhere else. The dessert with the red bean fish is delicious and I get it every time. Highly recommend for a fun night out. Service was impeccable.
Gyu-Kaku in Brookline has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Boston. This location is a lot busier than the one in Harvard Square, but I still prefer coming to this one because of its location is closer to me. My friend and I enjoyed our dinner a lot tonight, food was fresh and our server Wendy was really attentive, as well as the rest of the staffs. We didn't have to wait too long for our food, and waitstaffs were available to change our grill when it gets burn. Tonight was a much better experience compared to my previous one 2 weeks ago because we were stuck with a waitress(forgot her name) she was really slow, forgetful and we waited really long to have our food, sometimes we had to remind her twice what we've order.
This place is a must try. Make a reservation because this place is BUSY - our first time coming we didn't make a reservation and the wait time was 2 hours so we just came back another day with a reservation on OpenTable. The concept of grilling your own food is fun and makes dining with another person exciting. We did an all-you-can-eat dining experience, everyone at the table needs to order it which makes sense. The grill, however, is small and really should only be used by 2 people max. It was just us two so it was fine but if you're with a lot of people you might be waiting a while to actually use the grill and eat your food. Our server, named Friday, was exceptional. She was attentive and explained the entire menu to us. Good food, short cook time, flavor was on point, and environment was awesome. Definitely will be back.
It was my first time going to a Korean BBQ restaurant and it was also my birthday. It was such a great first time experience. I had their surf and turf course. You definitely bget your money worth in food. The service was great. All the staff was knowledgeable and willing to help if I had any questions. Loved it!
The items on the Premium All You Can Eat Menu was worth ordering as the premium meats are only available on that menu unless you order a la carte. Please note that if one person at your table orders an All You Can Eat Menu, everyone at the table needs to order the same. That wasn't sensible since my 12-year old eats like a bird and I had to pay for her All You Can Eat price. I rated 2 stars for value due to this. The food was delicious and the pace the plates came out were well timed although there was a slight wait as the restaurant was busy.
Make sure you make a reservation else expect at least half-an-hour to an hour wait on a Thursday. Staff were very nice and knowledgeable.
We were seated late, then basically told to hurry up and get out. We waited almost 20 minutes and no drinks or food had been brought to the table. The manager was called and did not care about the service he just wanted us to leave. We will not ever return!
Our server Alfa was amazing, as well as the other waiters/waitresses that helped out, like the manager and Wendy. One thing that was iffy was the grill had to be changed way to often, which is not the fault of the staff but it felt annoying having to bother the staff to keep changing. Hopefully more dessert would be added to the AYCE. I also know that the AYCE is timed 90 minutes and it is understood why there is a time limit, however I don't think it is fair when our waiter is no where to be seen half the time and it is hard to get someones attention. Not talking about this past experience but the experience before when I first did AYCE. We ordered one round and finished within 15 minutes, and when we wanted to go for another round our waiter was not seen for about half an hour and the other staff was busy with their tables. I understand people are busy with their tables, but with a 90 minute eat time I feel like its mostly waiting, so this needs to be changed.
