It was honestly the best dining experience we have ever had. Sitting in front of the kitchen and seeing the staff work together made my husband and i feel as if we were watching Top Chef live. And the Food, best steak we have had. Epic night!

Unbelievable food and service! Our server Blair was very good, made sure everything was good. The wine that was chosen for us was very good and an amazing price and value for the wine. Overall it was amazing experience for us while visiting from Vancouver and would highly recommend it to anyone going to LA and would definitely go back the next time!

We were a party of four celebrating a 30th anniversary. We searched on the Internet for a restaurant of high quality to celebrate in style. We considered several stand-bys such as Pacific Dining Car, Musso Franks, Nick and Steffs and Patina at the WDCH. We chose Gwen based on the reviews on Open Table and the interesting menu. Although pricey we were prepared to pay for a quality experience. Publishing the wine list on their web site gave me the opportunity to decide in advance on a Spanish Tempranillo. It turned out the be an excellent choice. We all ordered steaks and they were cooked rare, as we requested despite the waiting making it clear that the chefs do not approve of rare and that the steakes would be medium. We thought this was an odd statement as anyone paying over $50 for a piece of beef should have some say in how it was to be cooked. The cocktail that one of our guests ordered turned out to be awful and it was returned to the bar with no replacement offered or requested. In general the service was spotty with errors made. One of the appetizers we ordered never appeared. When the food arrived it was usually placed in front of the wrong person. One of our guest's wine was topped off with one from the wrong decanter. The wine steward was horrified and offered our guest a glass of another, less tasty, wine. He should have offered a glass of the wine we ordered! The sillest detail of the evening were the knives we were presented with to cut our steaks. The waiter took the time to explain what each knife was made for and out of what materials. ALL FOUR KNIVES WERE DULL! If the knives were so wonderful why were they not sharpened? The side dishes were tasty and nicely presented. Desserts were fine. An 18% tip was added by the restaurant; no problem. A restaurant of this cost should have had a higher quality of service! Get rid of those ridiculous knives and give the guests proper, sharp steak knives!!

Second time here. Tasting menu this time. So good (again). And great, unpretentious, helpful people. And (who knew at a steak place?) one of the best salads (market salad, I think it’s called) I’ve ever had — and I’ve had a lot of high-end restaurant salads. Overall a terrific experience. We’ll be back. Thank you, Team Gwen!

My husband and I had a wonderful meal at Gwen on Saturday. We were out Christmas shopping, and went on Open Table to see what was available around 6 pm and lucked out to get a reservation.
We were seated upstairs, which felt removed from the lovely main room at first, but once other guests started to arrive, it was fine. The decor is warm and elegant, with dark blues and gold accents.
We started out with two delicious cocktails, then both ordered the tasting menu (it is definitely a very expensive restaurant, so this was they way to go at $85 p/p). We shared the charcuterie plate, and warm, crusty homemade bread, a tasty scallop with persimmon, next was our favorite - a salty mushroom pasta - to die for, then a NY steak for two - topped off with a flour-less chocolate cake. All in all an excellent dining experience!

We dined at this meat centric concept of butcher shop restaurant expecting this second restaurant of wonderful Curtis Stone (ala Maude) and brother Luke to overwhelm us with excellence. The scallops were superb. The salad very good. But, overall we were disappointed by small portions big prices, too wet a miniature 3-4" lobster roll, very good but not excellent 32oz rib eye.
Then came the coup de grace. Not only the shocking $100 corkage (2 bottles), but an added 18% surcharge on the entire bill, which the wait staff said was not a tip. He explained that "this 'service charge'goes to the house for salaries and is not a tip." Not believing this, I asked for a manager, and he corroborated that this charge goes to the restaurant, who then uses it to pay employee salaries, because "we don't pay minimum wage. We pay them well." So, I'm stymied. Really ...at $135 for a steak I'm being told that there isn't enough money to pay their employees without adding on another 18%?
I must give them kudos for integrity: removing both the outrageous 18% surcharge for salaries and the $100 corkage that came with little wine service but nice glasses. So, if you decide to dine here, I recommend that you negotiate your bill in advance, lest you become victim to the policies that (I hear) is the brainchild, Ben Aviram. I can only hope that Curtis and Luke Stone see wisdom in replacing him or repealing them.

We enjoyed our time at Gwen. They do a great job of making you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. The restaurant is a full on production so you should expect an amazing overall experience. The 5 course meal was the way to go for sure. They let us sub the normal meat with a 30 day aged bone in rib eye which was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had.

Definitely give this place a try!

I made reservations for my children who are 20 and 25. It’s their first thanksgiving away from family. Gwen was appealing because they live in Hollywood and could walk there. I loved the menu—a set menu of delectable courses. The kids loved it, especially the first course—a veloute. Claire loved the Brussels sprouts as well. The turkey was tender and flavorful. They called after to say it was the best thanksgiving dinner they’d ever had. That made me feel good as a mom. For $85 a person, I was able to find a special experience for my children that kept away any holiday blues. Well done, Gwen!

What an afternoon! My husband and I booked a table at Gwen for our Thanksgiving meal. It was a prefix menu and a lovely one at that. We showed up a little early and we were escorted to the bar until our table was ready. We sat down and we each had a delicious lemon drop martini. Anyway, I’m sitting at the bar and I look over towards the kitchen and I see...OMG... Curtis Stone! I had no expectation that he would be there on Thanksgiving day. I felt the need to say hello and tell him what a fan I was. Never once have I made one of his recipes that wasn’t absolutely fabulous. He is a chef extraordinaire! I walked over knowing he was terribly busy instructing the kitchen staff, but I had to take this opportunity to say hello because who knew when I would ever see him again in person. So I called his name and he came over. I told him I was a huge fan and that I owned all of his cookbooks and was terribly excited to be at Gwen for the first time. We shook hands and had a lovely conversation . I was thrilled to be able to say hello. Further into our dining experience, we went through several courses . When it came to the main course, who came over to serve our meal but Curtis Stone himself! What a lovely surprise and a TOTAL treat for me :) What a delightful man he is. Full of friendliness and humor. This totally made my day! Do not hesitate to book a reservation at Gwen. The food is extraordinary, the service is tops and the ambiance is wonderful.

It was ok. I felt it to be so unfriendly. Staff was so serious. Loosen up, it is just food.

Our waiter came across so condescending and forgot our beets and had to remind him. They arrived after the fact.

Then he asked us if we wanted coffee, so my guest ordered a decaf expresso. It never came and then he showed up with the bill. Who knows what he was thinking. Glad this restaurant automatically includes a 18% gratuity because I definitely wouldn’t have given 20%

The food was delicious and the place is beautiful. 👍

Beautiful interior, outstanding quality. Open kitchen is always cool too. But you need to be prepared to pay 400 USD for a steak to share with 5 people. On the higher end, even if it was very good. Well, I guess you pay also for the great design. Congratulations on that.

Very attentive enthusiastic welcoming service. After watching the energetic cook staff prepare the meals, you’ll be tempted to try them all. Enticing butchery display upfront near the entrance.

This restaurant has amazing food, excellent service and great atmosphere each time we been there. Friends of ours introduced this place for our anniversary and we love it since. But we stop this past Friday and we were a little disappointed. Great food and service like always but it appears to us that they have a new bartender? The cocktails we order were horrible! It felt like I was drinking Water instead of a Manhattan, same for my husband. I try his and same effect. I decided to have wine instead, to see if I get better results to find out wine was not great either. I could tell this wine is been open for awhile. Quite frankly it was disappointing for a $38 dollar glass of wine. Again the food and service are great but the cocktails they need to step up to the great label of there food and service.

Excellent service and sommeliers. The dining room is beautiful. I must admit, I was expecting a lot given how highly recommended this restaurant was, and we didn't come away from the meal feeling like it was a "must" or that it was particularly memorable. The lamb appetizer was amazing but nothing else stood out. No interesting flavor combinations, textures etc... We've had better meals in LA at less spendy restaurants.

Somemlier was beyond rude. The Wagu upgrade was extortionate and we were not told of the price when it was offered. Walked away with an additional US$185 increase thanks to the Wagu beef option. They also add on their own tip - which ended up being US$90 for a meal for 2 people! Food was fantastic - but staff need lessons in customer service.

Server and host were both incredibly rude, patronizing and unhelpful--to the point where we did not have enough water glasses or silverware to eat and drink and had to assist in clearing our own plates when our entrees arrived. It was 5:30pm on a Monday and the restaurant was empty. We were there with a well-behaved child who is very accustomed to eating in restaurants. There clearly lad no interest in serving him or us. It was my husband's birthday dinner and they ruined the evening.

We were excited to dine at Gwen. The service was horrendous. Our food was served to only a portion of us at a time. We had to wait for other portions. Our main course came out to only 3 of us. There were 4 of us. The meat tasted great but was Luke warm. The sides came out after we finished and our friend never got his meal. The corkage was $50.00. Obsurd!!!! The wine was stored in the hallway and I had to ask over and over to pour more. When we were leaving the waiter came up to my friend and I and said “ he was wrong but might lose his job”!!! We had to pay $160 per couple for a horrible ding experience. They wouldn’t even waive corkage fee.

Waited 30 minutes without an update from the hostess despite making a reservation. I understand sometimes the schedule can fall behind or a party stays longer than anticipated, but acknowledging the wait, giving an update, and apologizing afterwards would be much appreciated.

Once seated, the service was good. The interior design was beautiful. The expected meat-centric menu with use of high quality ingredients, was good however there were no unique dishes or any standout dish, except for the bread, that bread was delicious. For the price point, I expected more out of the food.

My wife & I went to Gwen at the recommendation of my parents, who ate there on September 1st or 2nd.

We sat at the chef's counter, which we highly recommend for twosomes or threesomes. It was lovely and quiet and terrific to watch how meticulously each dish is prepared. The chef's counter seats were also surprisingly comfortable.

The restaurant is gorgeous. We loved the art-deco meets 1970's mash-up of decor.

Overall, Gwen struck us as a bit over-priced but we are glad we went. Would we return? Probably not. We did not think the cost encouraged repeating the experience we received (over $300 for 2 people and only 2 drinks).

If you have the spare funds, it is a lovely place.
