Guu - Davie
This was our first time at this location of the Guu franchise. The food and service was great and it was what we expected. Compared to the other locations, it could use a small update on their decor and ambiance. It's still nice, but comparatively to their other locations, it's lacking a bit of that "izakaya feel".
We have loved Guu ever since the original Thurlow location. Every Guu has a different style, ambiance, and menu, so we were excited to try the Davie location since it was our first time here. We’ve never had a poor experience at Guu for the past two decades... until now.
First, the portions were smaller than average. Second, every dish was served lukewarm. We informed the server about the food temp which she offered to reheat but we declined as it seemed like a hassle. Frankly, even the $3 green tea was warmer.
For an average $40-50 dinner we typically spend at Guu, this is the first time we decided not to order more due to the disappointing experience and left still hungry even after multiple dishes. Unfortunately, although the food tasted good, the value was lower than expected. We were speculating whether the drop in quality and value at the Guu on Davie was due to the pandemic and increase in overhead.
Afterwards, we ended up going to McDonald’s to fulfill our hunger. Anyhow, we don’t mind spending more, but the size of the dishes were small which made us feel like getting gouged twice.
We recommend all the other Guu locations but would hesitate with the Davie location.
Delicious food. great presentation. welcoming, attentive, courteous service. Hiro the manager is great, accommodating. Patio very Covid-conscious in spacing, hygiene.
Food was really good, but portions were pretty small for its price. Great service, Ambience was very positive, lively crowd!
Such a great meal! Sake flight was great and good value. Karage, miso black cod were outstanding and the sashimi was nicely presented and oh so fresh! But the stellar service by super genki and friendly staff really made the meal a fun night out! Subarashi!
Great service + price = excellent experience!
Came here for happy hour on mother's day, the patio was nice and spaced out, wasn't too crowded. 10/10 for service. Highly recommend!
Great find. We had the Shabu Shabu, and it was delicious. They are a little understaffed, but the people working made up for it with hustle and super positive attitude.
Quite a unique Guu experience. Loved the multitude of sharing options, accompanying sake and fun staff! The location however brought back memories of Northern pubs and wild nights.
Great food and great service!
The food at other locations of Guu is so much better. I wonder if this is really part of the Guu group
Great value price/what’s in the plate
Great value for the portion.
The service was very slow, we had to remind the waiter to have water multiple times and had to ask him almost 3 times for the bill at the end of the night. It didn’t seem too clean, the floors were very sticky and they still had mouthwash in the bathroom ( not very COVID friendly). The food was good, but not worth what they charge for it, and the portions were smaller than I was expecting (and from what my friends had known from other locations). Was nice to be able to sit outside. Glad I tried it, but wouldn’t rush back.
the straws break so easily. They broke more than twice a night and at the end we had the drink without straw.
My friends and I went into the restaurant at 3:15pm, no one was around to greet us and it was empty- understandable as I knew they just opened not long ago at 3pm for Happy Hour. A guy came in 1 minute after and shouted at us that they are not opened. I knew for a fact that he was wrong. When I made reservations online, the earliest time available was also 3pm onwards. Then he told us to sit and wait for 5 minutes. As we sat down suddenly the guy came back to shout at us that he can seat us down.
Then when we were ordering, I got to the end of the menu and was about to ask my friends if they wanted to order desserts when suddenly this same guy grabbed my menu and started collecting my friends and walked away.
No one checked on us to see if the food was tasting good etc.
We were actually relieved to see a kitchen staff come out with our food and served it to us instead of the other guy when the second dish started coming out. Overall, the food was also meh. The Ebi shrimp was not crispy at all. The batter was soft. Do not order the Oden. Soup was bland. Toppings are bland. It’s basically dumping toppings into this “soup” and letting it soak in the flavour. The honey bacon fries are like Costco fries but with ketchup and mayo on top and bacon. Takoyaki was actually not bad. The chicken karaage was kind of over fried.
At the end of the meal, the rude guy collected our payments and at this point he seemed happy that we were leaving.
Def not what we expected and would not go back again. The level of customer service needs some serious improvement. Really left a bad taste in our mouth. I’ve been to different Guu locations in Vancouver and this is the worst one.
Food took a little longer to come out than expected
We’ve been there so many times. I thought there are numerous menu, a lot of choices, and comfy seats even.
Guu on Davie has got to be the worst izakaya's in Vancouver. Everything about this places repels me...uncomfortable vibe (the volume of their music was like sitting in front of speakers), decor and vibe sucked, food here compared to the other Guu's is subpar to say the least, and service was meh. is I really wanted to like this place and even went back to give it another shot but that just reinforced just how much I do not like this resto. Sorry. Adios. 👋
Excellent casual Japanese Tapas and dishes, excellent buck a shuck oysters, great fish, amazing service and staff. Will definitely be back. Not too busy (went on a Saturday night) but can be a little loud
Especially good for winter
Waiting was taking shots with customers
No one spoke English
Food was bland
Always such a great time at Guu. Friendly staff, amazing food and great vibe. This is a must try place for everyone
Love all Guu locations! The staff are always friendly, attentive, and the ambiance is warm and inviting. Very relaxed atmosphere and a great place for dinner with friends and family. Even good place if you're with kids.
Excellent service and food.
The service was comically abysmal although they weren't busy. We waited half an hour after ordering our drinks, hailed the waiter again, but finally had to ask another waitress. The drinks were very weak, although we'd asked for doubles. The food, when it finally arrived was so-so, very different like the excellent Guu Garden. The squid was so salty it was inedible. The tea also didn't arrive until we'd hailed a second waitress. The outdoor deck was pleasant and that's the best I can say about this restaurant.
Amazing tucked away patio in the west end on Davie St for oden and excellent innovative Japanese izakaya and tapas.
Out dinner reservation was at 5pm and the restaurant only has 1 table dining when we got in. Food was good with good value. However we felt like we were being rush through our dinner from ordering to finishing our meal. We finished our meal at 6:30pm and the restaurant was still 80% vacant. Very spacious and seems like it will be good for large group.
I love Guu on Gastown and on Nelson, but this one one Davie is not good at all! The menu is different, it didn't taste remotely Japanese. I'm born and raised Japanese so I have a pretty good idea of what Japanese food should taste like. Definitely go to the other Guu's in downtown Vancouver, they are awesome.
The biggest problem for us was the combination of din from customers exacerbated by traditional izakaya greetings (by all staff) when somebody came or left. It was totally distracting. The food was... OK. What we like of what we ordered were chicken karaage and an oyster-on-bruQDschetta dish, both had nice basic flavours supplemented by imaginative sauces. The tsukemono ("pickled things") was attractive but rather expensive for what turned out to be a jar of 3 or 4 different little vegetables (two by two... like the ark?) in a mild pickling broth. They have a "house beer" - a Pale Ale, but at a $12 price point (half litre?) I thought it was a bit pricey.
Tldr: don't waste your money.
Disappointed to say the least. Unlike many people we knew we were going for Oden and Shabu shabu but we're still disappointed. The price of items is terribly high . "Wagyu" which isn't even from Japan less then 100grams is 23 dollars. There is no vareity in vegetables and they don't have mushrooms or cabbage. Which is basically of shabu shabu. The only saving grace was the karrage. The soup bases were ok but everything else was a waste. Drinks were expensive. Our waitress constantly forgot things and didn't offer quality service that made up for the prices of things. There was a male waiter who seemed to be carrying a majority of the work. The set up also doesn't feel like an Izakaya and felt more like a creepy yellow basement. I won't be going back.
When I heard Guu Kobachi closed down and a new Davie location opened up, I was expecting something similar, but no the ambience everything including the food is totally different. To be honest I was very disappointed, dont think I will go back again. I am guessing they dont want to spend too much on the renovation when they took over the new location.
The quality of the food is below average, not worth mentioning.
Guu Davie has a variety of dishes- Oden, Shabu Shabu, sashimi, their fresh sheets..I could go on, but really, they're an awesome izakaya. It's a fun dining experience not to be missed
Will not return. Most disappointing Guu ever. Waited 15 minutes for a pitcher of beer, 35 minutes till first dish was finally served. The salmon was so awful, other food were terrible as well. Location might be new so servers might still be in training hence the slow service, but food quality was no excuse.
Much better izakaya food available in Vancouver and for lower prices...the various incarnations of Guu continue to be unimpressive (but still stay in business somehow)
