Gusto Ristorante is a Northern Italian restaurant with a touch of the South at the Sea Turtle Marketplace in Hilton Head Island.
The executive chef and owner Giancarlo Balestra with his wife Nancy bring the vibrant flavors of his native hometown of Rome, Italy to Hilton Head. The couple who met in Rome 28 years ago discovered their shared passion for food and adventure and have since owned and operated restaurants in Aspen, Co, Winter Park, Fla and Saratoga Springs, NY. They fell in love with Hilton Head and decided to jump into this new exciting culinary adventure, hence the name Gusto, which means flavor and taste in Italian but also means a zest and enthusiasm for a delicious taste of life. The restaurant has a full bar, extensive wine list.

                                                                                      We absolutely loved Gusto when it was on the south side. Glad they were able to score more space where they are now. Just our feedback on last night, eating outside was as lovely as could be given then planes screeching in for landings and taking off. Not terrible but super loud and distracting. The setting is wonderful minus the flight plan. Maybe pick an inside table if this would bother you. Wait staff was lovely from start to finish. Very attentive. They forgot 2 requests from us and we just let that go. Upon ordering entrees they were out of a couple of things by 7:30 unfortunately so recommending an earlier reservation than 7:15 if there is something you love just to make sure or call ahead. Our 2 pasta dishes had very little sauce and were dry. Given the request for more salad dressing as some of our salads had no dressing on parts, we just ate some of it and let that go. Not worth asking again. The other dishes looked great and our guests were happy. I’ve had better at this restaurant in terms of the food and it could have just been an off night. It used to be one of our favs and will def give it one more try! We love to support local. Drinks were tasty and again, wait staff was excellent. I only rated lower because of the actual food.

                                                                                      Our server (Joey) was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable about the menu and was very personable. If you have kids: there is not a changing table available in either bathroom so they told us to change our baby on the front seats by the hostess stand. We were also SHOCKED at the price of our toddler’s meal—a kid size portion of buttered noodles with two meatballs was $26! They did not have a kids menu available (which is fine—they had options readily available) so we didn’t know the price going into it.

He offered us a choice of waters, failed to mention extra charge for other than tap. Wine list did not list by the glass choices. We were asked to say what we wanted but we didn't know the vineyard or price of various choices, The menu clearly stated that sides could not be substituted. My husband hates mashed potatoes. He was offered double vegetables in lieu of the potatoes but neither of us is real keen on squash medley. Any other Italian restaurant usually serves pasta on the side. You might want to look into that. At that point we walked out. Will never return.

                                                                                      We celebrated my Husbands’s 79th birthday with dinner at Gusto . Everything was wonderful . Our server Joe couldn’t not have been nicer . The food is delicious. We had gnocchi osso buco , the ribeye special … cooked perfectly . They topped it off by bringing a cannoli with a birthday candle . Thanks so much for a memorable birthday !

I enjoyed the puttanesca and garlic bread while my husband feasted on fried calamari and gnocchi osso buco. We shared the super Tuscan red wine and it all went together beautifully. Service, ambiance and food was superb. We can’t wait to explore more of the menu.

We were greeted warmly, seated promptly, and treated to attentive service from a team of people who seemed to enjoy their work! Our server was super busy so several others pitched in. Owner was bubbly and checking on guests at each table. Spaghetti Carbonara and Capellini Positano were fresh and full of flavor. Patio dining was a lovely setting. A truly enjoyable experience.

                                                                                      Shrimp and scallop pasta special was okay. Shrimp was cut in pieces, scallops was tiny bay. The entree was watery and lacked flavor. The second angel hair pasta dish lacked flavor and taste as well. Meals were overpriced . Coffee was cold and cannolis were small for the price. We went due to several reviews, we must have missed something. Good luck going forward.

                                                                                      I had been going to the Gusto's in Fresh Market ands was disappointed when it closed and rejoiced when it opened. Had a disappointing first experience in the new place but chalk it up to Covid and new place. I ate the Cannelloni special which was superb in every way. Visually , portion and taste. The house cab was good and service was quite good. The restaurant was busy and the hard surfaces bounced noise around. However, I loved it all, and will not wait as long to go back

                                                                                      We both had sole fish that was outstanding. The vegetable medley was sautéed, fresh and tasty. Outdoor seating was very nice and the service was excellent. Highly recommended!
