The Gulf Stream Bar & Grille
The Gulf Stream Bar and Grille’s creative menu offers coastal cooking with a New England Twist - taking delicious recipes from regions along the Gulf Stream, adding our own New England style and offering them to you. We use only the highest quality products, locally sourced and organic when possible. All of our dishes are house-made with the freshest ingredients and we proudly support our local farmers and fishermen.
We are housed in an original Quonset Hut, built in 1942 as part of the US Navy’s PT-Boat Training Center at Melville. The space was converted into a restaurant over 30 years ago and began operation as The Gulf Stream Bar and Grille in May 2016.

Excellent food, the specials were terrific. And how often does the chef come out to make certain everyone and everything was great. Not once, but three times. Thank you Chef Sulley
Excellent meal! Staff was great too. Made for a memorable dining experience!
Staff was amazingly helpful and friendly. They also had an amazing live jazz guitarist and singer performing to make the ambiance special. Overall, a great experience!
Super Live Country Musik!
Worth going a little out of your way to get to this one. Bright and open. Great views. Portions were not gigantic but everything was delicious
Some unique food to New England, ie Southern and Caribbean. Just because a piece of fish broke in half, they gave another one, complimentary of course. Chef came to our table to apologize. He and server were friendly, always smiling.
Service not good, staff new nothing about the food. Fish so heavily fried, it was all batter no fish. They charged us for bread and never told us..not attentive to us during meal at all, and it was not busy, empty actually. Never go there again, don't recommend it at all..way to over priced for what you got!!!
In simplest terms, not good. Off the mark despite other reviews suggesting otherwise. Ordered salad with dressing on side, entire bottom of bowl covered in dressing, lettuce had sand in it and multiple pieces were rotting. Waffles for the chicken-waffles were hard as a rock, completely overcooked. Waitress was nice but could only say that head chef was on vacation. Plenty of other places to spend your money if you are on vacation. Maybe it was an off night, but with plenty of other solid choices in the area I would go elsewhere. Hope this just an off night for them.
Everything was excellent. My wife and I were very satisfied with all aspects of the experience. Definitely would go again.
Love this gem! Third time there and all of the food is delicious. Fish and chips, Debris nachos, debris sandwich, chicken waffles, chicken bacon sandwich, and loaded fries are all amazing. The view is lovely and casual and on weekends they have really talented acoustic style singers.
Great food, not crowded, excellent and picturesque waterfront views of the marina and boats, especially sitting outside in nice weather. A great place to spend a summer evening.
I love Gulf Stream, we always have a great time there. It has a great ambiance and a historical location. Free parking on site is a definite plus for Aquidneck Island in the Summer.
Jeff and Megan were awesome. The young lady we met at the hostess stand was welcoming. Food was excellent can’t wait to go back
I've been to this restaurant before under previous management; this version is about the same, decent, nothing special. It's not fancy and doesn't pretend to be -- I like that. My meal sounded interesting on the menu but was pretty bland until I doctored it with hot sauce and salt. It has a air of a local hangout, which I like. I'll probably go back, but will stick to a hamburger or fish and chips which I think is likely more their forte.
Seated outside as requested for sunset. Jeff our server was awesome and attentive with a million dollar smile. Let be music was relaxing. Food was delivered in a relaxed manner not rushed Drinks were excellent a wonderful dining experience. We are glad we went and will be back
We tried the Gulf Stream Bar & Grille for lunch on Fathers Day. We were a little early for our reservation, but the staff was able to seat us immediately. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, the food was good, reasonably priced and served quickly, and we liked the ambiance of the restaurant, both inside and the available seating on the outdoor deck.
The food here is very good!!!We had the debris nachos and the calamari, they were excellent! Not sure if they were short staffed this evening but we had several different people waiting on us, so it was a bit confusing, however everyone was very nice!! There was a bit of a wait between our appetizers and our meal. When our meal arrived my veggies and potatoes were cold. The bartender happened to come over and ask how our meal was and my husband told her my potatoes were cold. I had only taken a few bites of potatoes, not the veggies yet. She immediately brought me hot potatoes. My steak was cooked perfectly, except it wasn’t hot. My husband has come here for lunch several times and always had a great meal. We will go back. Maybe my food sat while they finished my dad and husbands meal ? My dad had the stripper he said it was hot and excellent and my husband had the chicken an waffles and they were excellent. We will go again, I liked the atmosphere and the food was good.
Fish undercooked. Average at best.
Great food, great people and can I say good value. Thank you Rita and Sulley...be back when the weather turns nicer...
Great food and casual atmosphere! Peel and eat shrimp was delicious!
Great seafood! Our family had a great time!
Great Food, Beautiful view...will defiantly go back!
Great music and location, slow kitchen and the food was meh. It's too bad because it has a ton of potential!
Off the beaten path which is good in and around Newport. In a marina and you can watch the boats. Music on Fri and Sat night and you can still carry on a conversation. Kind of a Southern menu and tasty except for the nachos. They serve them cold with a pot roast meat and very little cheese.
Will go back there
Awesome calamari best I've ever had! The key lime cheesecake is excellent and different from any I've ever had before.
We have been there twice and the first time it was good so we went back when friends from down south . The second time was not so good. Overall this is an ok restaurant located in a unique spot on the water with hundreds of beautiful boats to see. The menu is somewhat limited, smaller portions, and they have some unusual offerings such as alligator and some other southern type cuisine . There were five of us , three of whom were from the south and two ordered the southern meals but didn't think it was very good or authentic. The hake was raw and had to be sent back to be cooked, the side dish of beans and a vegetable were very dry. Two people ordered the muscles and raved about them but there were not many on the plate and the rice mixture was super hot and spicy without that warning.
We gave our GPS a workout to find the place, not far or difficult in the end, we just didnt realize it was in the old Navy/Melville area of Portsmouth. Food was unexpected as well - a little cajun feel I remember from trips to Louisiana, clearly sothern (they had alligator bits!) but very fresh and apparently local ingedients. I had pan-seared Hake & Hoppin John, really delicious and totally unknown to my New York City native Italian-American palate. I took the leftovers home and enjoyed it all again this week. Service was exceptional throughout. Even the salad was notable - simple, fresh, but the tomatoes were roasted and the house vinaigrette was light and just great. We went out for Father's Day looking for "something different near the water", we found it and totally enjoyed it.
Wasn't sure what I was going to order, initially--first visit!
Choose Mussels Etouffee--out of this world...traditional Creole...great tasting! I am ready to order same again, soon---that is the effect I left with! Will be returned NH soon!
We live in Newport and were just looking for somewhere new and casual.
Kinda stumbled on the Gulf Stream Grill. Had great meal in a fun atmosphere with live music. Shared a calamari (tossed in a great sauce). I had the mussels etouffee - I lived on the gulf for a few years and this was really good. Our dinner out last week was at the Spiced Pear - we were both laughing because we enjoyed this much more for a lot less.
We'll be going back. Probably shoot for weekday evening, I think the deck will be very busy on the weekends during the summer.
Atmosphere was very nice and I really enjoyed the mixed drinks and the food was great. The menu was small and unusual with a more southern style to it, but nice to be different and very tasty.
We were initially frustrated when we arrived and there was no parking left in the small lot. We had finally found a spot (not sure if it was ok to park there). We got to the hostess and she told us that they were not seating anyone for 1/2 hour because the kitchen was really backed up. My husband asked if we could just sit down and have drinks at the table and wait. She said yes. Our waitress came right over, got our drinks quickly and immediately took our order. It took awhile for the food to come out but it was really good! Our waitress was great.
We went for a nice lunch on the water and got exactly what we came for. Great food, good and attentive service, and a nice casual ambiance. Gulf Stream is definitely my new spot!
Waitstaff acted like we were regulars. Can't wait to come back.
This was the second time we ate here. The first time, I had the soup special and the calamari. There was chorizo in the soup (which was good) and then chorizo was sprinkled on the calamari. By the time I ate the calamari I was picking the sausage out. Went back this time and ordered the calamari without the chorizo and it was wonderful. Dad ordered the beef short ribs which were tender and he loved it.
I have gone for Paint Nite and the service at the bar is phenomenal! There were several people clustered waiting for a drink, and I waited at the end until he could get to me, I was surprised at how quickly he came over to me after taking care of everyone else.
Atmosphere is wonderful. Inside and outside!
The Gulf Stream Bar and Grill is a bit off the beaten path and it was well worth it. It is right next to a marina so it is very picturesque. We had a cloudy day but the sunsets must be magnificent! There is outdoor seating but many windows to see the views if you are sitting inside. Most notable was the very friendly service. Our server was Jeff and he was super cheerful, patient and helpful. We had great live music by Christopher James. There are many cocktails to choose from and a good beer and wine list. The food was very good too. The steamed mussels were tasty and so was the special- sashimi tuna taco. The pecan pie was a delicious ending. I am not from the area so won't get back often but I would put it on your list- especially on a nice warm evening-and get there before sunset!!
Excellent food great waitress. Musician Chris was awesome! Great time for our girls night out!
Great new find. Food was creative and delicious and atmosphere was fun.
