Underrated gem in Durham. Great food and outstanding deck. Lovely all around
Love the outside patio.
Food was fantastic and quality consistent! Will go again and prices are very good!
Had a great time. The beer selection was excellent. The schnitzel and brotzeit tasted great. The ambiance was fantastic!
We had some delicious food outside in the first fall feeling day of the year. Our server started out really great but quickly went down hill which was unfortunate. We were not cared for in the way of waters being filled and we had to hunt down our server for our check, and then he wouldn’t split the check. It was odd.And one dish we had was not at all good. Overall, it’s a wonderful restaurant. Our experience could have been better though!
I had the rib eye steak. It was the best steak I have ever had. The dessert was delicious. I had lemon thyme ice cream. They give you the right size for dessert.
Amazing food and beautiful patio. The service was a little slow, but we enjoyed our meal and drinks. An awesome place for a celebration!
We got drinks and brotzeit to start, followed by the schnitzel and steak for dinner and finished with desert. It was all fantastic.
Food was delicious and authentic German. We sat in the outside cafe and enjoyed it. The service was outstanding. Also stopped by the on-site bakery. Delicious!
Everything about our dining experience was great, from food to ambience it was a great evening!
Excellent service. Good food , but a limited menu. I had the chicken livers. Very well done, but could use more favor. We will go back again.
Service was very slow this particular night.
Wonderful vibe! Feels like old Europe What a jewel.
Excellent whiskey sour, dinner and dessert. Bread perfect. Wait person attentive and friendly. Ate outside on patio in cool weather so ideal! Salad was only disappointment as rather bland.
Nice outdoor atmosphere. There is an extensive drink menu and beer choices are plentiful. While the food was delicious, the food menu is rather sparse with German cuisine choices (ie only 3 choices for main dishes -schnitzel, etc).
I hadn't been to Guglhupf in over a year because I was disappointed with the new menu. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the small plate offerings had been expanded. I enjoyed the eggplant salad and pork croquettes, but I still miss the fried oyster salad that was on the old menu.
We love this place and we love what they have done to the menu. They have kept the best schnitzl this side of the Atlantic, and changed things up with new takes on middle European food. We sat outside with out golden retriever, and the staff was wonderful with him.
Food was very good. Noise level was very high inside. They don't have an elevator to the second floor so hard for handicapped people since the first floor is a small area near a very busy bar. However, the food makes up for the noise, etc.
We were in town visiting Duke University and came across this Gem. Everything about it was amazing! Our entree’s were delicious, and so were the desserts. Because the Bakery closes early, we were sure to come early and buy some treats from there as well. I’ve never had pretzels that were so light and fluffy on the inside. I only wish we lived closer, because I would definitely go again!
The lentil salad is superb.
Each dish was beautifully prepared and presented. The flavors were exceptional! I had 2 vegan small plates that were thoughtfully created and so delicious. My husband had the short rib, our friends the seafood special. Everyone raved about their dinner. Alison was so very cordial, knowledgeable, accommodating and efficient! The only slight disappointment was the wine list, but the terrific cocktails and beer made up for it. We love the casual, unique ambience. We had a delightful evening that exceeded expectations.
Have been to Guglhupf countless times. We decided to try a few new things and were not disappointed. The sausage platter was fantastic as was the eggplant small plate (please make this a permanent addition to your menu). My husband's fish was prepared perfectly for him as part of a restricted diet. The wine is always great. Our server, Lara was, as always, fantastic with accommodations and recommendations. A shout out to Patrick for all his help and, of course, the chef, who provides continuously great, inventive cuisine. Keep it up!
The wait time for our food and drinks was a bit long, which led to a frustrating experience. But the food was great and we had friendly service. We love the patio dining area.
Guglhupf is a great place for a date night. The small plates are great for sharing and the atmosphere is comfy and enjoyable.
Love their patio! Perfect night with great food and service!
Dinner was delicious and the atmosphere was great.
Since the N&O had just written a very good review - it's why we tried the restaurant - the noise level may have been adversely effected by a very large crowd. We were in a corner table upstairs and we still had to "shout" to each other to be heard. If you plan to go, consider seating in their outside garden dinning area - it's lovely! The food was really good, and the service excellent! Their draft beer was also very good. All in all, worth trying.
Great evening to dine outside and enjoy the quiet and the decor. My rib eye was done just right and was tasty. My wife ordered the clam dish and it was delicious. We had thought the schweinhoxen was on the menu from the review in the newspaper this week but it was not. Disappointed about that and wish we had known as we have over an hour drive and would have waited until it was on the
menu. Next time I will call ahead to make sure.
We had a wonderful dinner here with friends who were visiting from out of town. Everyone loved their choices. The wait staff was knowledgeable and helpful. A great choice for a delicious dinner.
Thé aubergine salad is beautiful and extremely tasty. The halibut is the best ever!!
I feel that they changed the menu since I was here about 6 month ago—and it’s quite good! Smaller portions with an appropriate price. Excellent tasting; I’d call this more nouveau German cooking—German inspired
Ingredients arranged in a different way. Pastries, of course, always delightful. Well worth the trip.
We love good, authentic German food... and finally found a place in RDU to have it. This place was much better than we had expected. Every detail was perfect. The building and decor is so cool and inviting, it makes you just want to go and hang out in the Biergarten all day. Food was amazing and the staff perfect all night. Definitely a place to revisit!
Having lived in Germany, I felt that Guglhupf was a great slice of Germany in NC. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for an authentic experience.
The food was great ... the wine is good but the portions are rather small for the price ... the ambiance is very pleasant ...
If you like German food this is a good place for you and your friends
Excellent food and great beer! It’s a little noisy, but no need to talk much with how good the food is.
We loved Guglhupf. The schnitzel was very good, as was the beer. The ambiance great and they listened well to my reservation notes.
The foie gras is outstanding and the pork shoulder is moist and tasty. The drinks are beautifully made and served.
Our meals were very good and the beer selections were amazing. Our server seemed a bit inexperienced and not very attentive. The biggest disappointment was the dessert selections. Considering what the bakery produces, the menu choices were lacking, not very descriptive and quality was poor, while prices were too high! It was a very disappointing end to what otherwise would have been a positive experience.
We had dinner outside on the patio. Varied enough selection that 4 of us with different dietary restrictions could all find something to eat. Food was good, reasonable sized portions. Wait staff was competent, not too pushy. Noise level on the patio was OK, indoors was way too loud.
It was our first dinner experience and everyone seemed happy. I didn’t know to ask for my tomato salad to be timed with the rest of the food so it came first and only I had food for a while - but it was a wonderful salad and I shared. One friend got the wrong entree salad delivered and the replacement was a little slow in arriving. Service was very accommodating, and my food choices were delicious. Music could have been a little lower.
