Guaymas Ratings and Reviews
I had fond memories of going there 15 years ago so I was a little disappointed to see the place looking a little run down. Over the food was good but the guacamole had been refrigerated, a sin in my book, it needs to be made fresh. I won't be in a hurry to go back.
Guaymas is not what it used to be. Not sure if they're under different management from 5 years ago but they've lost quality. some of the food was bland, the guacamole lacked seasoning, the pico de gallo had wilted cilantro, the tacos were served with cold tortillas, the michelada is a beer with bloody mary mix, they've lost their authenticity while the price suggests 4 star quality. Felt like they were catering to a Marin County clientele with deeper pockets who didn't mind surburban chain restaurant food.
Great spot that we went to an a whim for Sunday lunch. Casual setting, lots of seating right on the waterfront and a delicious menu. The service was great although it did take a bit longer than expected for our order to come to the table, considering it was pretty slow when we were there. Also they have a lot of pigeons hanging around who are way too comfortable hopping on tables to eat scraps of food as soon as you step away...
Took our server about 10 minutes to come to our table to take our drink order. Chips and salsa was delicious except for the two hairs in the salsa. Poblano was excellent and the chipotle prawns flavor was excellent but were cold. Rice and beans flavorful and hot. The service was very inattentive and the lights were too bright. Its a great location near the water but service and food quality has slipped and unfortunately not in any hurry to return.
Very nice restaurant with good food and good service. The noise level, however, was a big problem. Not the noise from the other patrons but their background music. We asked twice to lower the music but they barely did so and it was annoying. It was still so loud that we had to make an effort to hear one another talk at the table.
Other than that, it's a good restaurant.
I made reservations on Open Table. Arrived to find a table for two outside. Asked if we could have told that is for handicap folks ok. Two seconds later a couple sat down at table neither were handicapped. My friend and I went the hostess and manager and asked why we were not seated there. The manager said nothing a real sap and the hostess a bubble head. I will never go back and have told five friends the experience. Poor way to run a restaurant!!
I’m Mexican so I am very critical about Mexican food. Guaymas’ food was tasty, yet nothing better than other restaurants we frequent. Chips were a bit tough. Not fresh. Guacamole was just mashed avocados. No salt or pepper. I had to add the green salsa and lime juice from my drink to it to get flavor. Chiles en Nogada were excellent! Ceviche was marinated in old, bitter lime juice. Tomatoes were not fresh either. Skin peeling off from sitting so long in the fermented lime juice. The ambiance was perfect! Got to see the Blue Angels show! Prices reflect the location. Freshness was just not there. Day of the week, Saturday early afternoon.
Group of 6. 5 had beef fajitas that were sizzling and had mounds of vegetables. My enchiladas were very tasty--bits of dried chili peppers in the sauce which meant to me that the sauce was made from scratch. View was lovely--fleet week planes were practicing. Staff attentive and pleasant. I would recommend.
Please see "Private Note to Guaymas" below. Service, very scarce, food came very late, we were actually thinking of leaving the place, many people (waiters) all milling around like not knowing what was what, management should hire a food server designer, someone to update staff on how to treat and engage a customer, at one time there must have been 7 to 10 waiting for plates at the service area by the grill. almost laughable. No one approach us for the food delays, if i didn't call a waiter, not our waiter, for an update on the food, i don't think we would have stayed for dinner. No apologies for the lateness of service, even when there was management staff present.
I had heard good things about Guaymas (don't recall where), but had never dined there. So we thought we'd give it a try before heading to a music event in Tiburon. What a mistake.
Asked for seating indoors or outdoors, we asked for a table indoors - and were seated right next to an open doorway on to their deck. We might have well been outdoors.
We shared a chicken fajitas. The food was less than mediocre - totally bland and tasteless. The wait staff were marginal.
We will not return.
We saw online, you sold tamales, however when we got there you had no tamales.
Table was wobbly hostess had to level it out with a folded card board.
I have had Mexican food at much lower scale restaurants and the food was one hundred percent better at other locations.
Service was not that great either.
You did not have bottled water
The patio area is way to crowded, and the tables are way too small to accommodate all the plates even for a party of two.
Don't plan to return after this bad rxperience.
We've dined here, usually for lunch, four or five times since the late eighties. It was inventive and delicious thirty years ago. The luster seems to diminish on each new visit. On Sunday for our party of seven, service was very good, the food was pretty and tasty, value was average (...no appetizers, a couple of salmon entrees, a burrito, four salads, two beers, two glasses of wine, no desserts---$260), but Guaymas no longer thrilled. And the outdoor patio floor needs a good cleaning and more attention ought to be paid to glassware and utensil cleanliness.
Food is decent. They were great 20 yrs ago, now it seems that they are resting on their laurels. Prices are decent, but not cheap, so definitely expect better and more creative food. Service is attentive, friendly, and helpful. If it were not for the service, this would just be another mediocre taco joint....Chipotle anyone? Take the ferry accross to the Ferry Building and go to Mijita's instead. Guaymas really needs to step up their game.
One of the loveliest places to dine outdoors in Marin. The patio views the dock to Angel Island and the twinkling lights of San Francisco. They provides gentle heaters at night that take off the chill. Nearly every dish I've had here was good. However, this evening I had the Mar y Tierra (skirt steak and shrimp) with sautéed vegetables in a well seasoned fresh tomato sauce. It was incredibly delicious! Highly recommend it for the food, the fantastic views and relaxing patio.
