About Grotta Azzurra
Founded in 1908 by the Davino family Grotta Azzurra was named for the blue grotto on the isle of Capri and designed to evoke the beauty of one of the worlds most famous caves in the world, intensified.
Enrico Caruso feasted here after performances, and Sinatra called it his one and only favorite Italian restaurant, making it the site of many a “Rat Pack” evening.
Shuttered for six years, Grotta Azzurra has now been stunningly renovated and rebirthed by a descendant renaissance for dining in Little Italy, with multi-talented chef Frank Castellana recreating the finest in Italian Cuisine.

Grotta Azzurra Ratings and Reviews
They took us right in and sat us at a great table for 6. The service was fast and the wait staff were very attentive. The was large portions and tasted awesome! They brought our orders out in a timely fashion and cleared the table just as quickly. We never got the feeling of being rushed and enjoyed our time as a family get together.
Thoroughly enjoyed Grotta Azzurra. We arrived significantly early for our reservation and humbly asked if the restaurant could accommodate us, and they happily did so. Our group of 7 shared 3 full size pasta dishes for starters - the gnocchi, penne with vodka sauce, and ravioli, and enjoyed each one. Mains were standard fare for an Italian restaurant, but the Pork Braciole was particularly good - if anything, my only criticism was that the portion size was too large - made a good dish unnecessarily heavy. Service was very good, and the restaurant has a great atmosphere.
First off- it was about 110 degrees inside. We asked them to turn the fans on and they didn’t work. The lights flickered on and off the whole time and when we asked why the sever told us they had been doing that all day. Not to mention the server didn’t come over for about 15 minutes. She didn’t bring enough water for the whole table. The food was mediocre. The bread was raw in the middle. The sangria was disgusting and sugary. I brought my family here from out of town because I loved it last time. I was so embarrassed. Horrible service, not once did she ask how our meals were. Everything was rushed and thrown at us. The food was room temperature and the meat bracciole was over cooked and hard. Needless to say, we won’t be going back.
Took my dad for a nostalgic dinner (he used to go often over 30 years ago) and he was happy it was still good. Rice balls, potato croquettes were great appetizers and not greasy and the lasagna and Bolognese sauce amazing and authentic. The eggplant parmesan had a great char grilled flavor to it that set it apart from the typical preparation.
It was a terrible choice to go here since there are so many good restaurants in little Italy.
food was not good at all, the place if a total tourist trap based on how many people were showing their tour bus tickets for meal.
I have been dining at grota azzura for years and I go there every time I go to Little Italy. It is affordable and the food is excellent. I have been to expensive restaurants such as Becco and Babbo and they are not as great as Grotta Azzura. I will definitely recommend it!
Food arrive after an hour , mostly cold. Waiter took off for the next 45 minutes and then showed up asking if we'd like drinks as we looked at empty plates. I ask for the check which he delivered with a 20% tip added beforehand for two people. Nice when you don't need to work for a living isn't it . Little Italy will be one restaurant smaller next year.
We chose Grotta Azzura for its charm and its location. We had a fantastic time and were treated excellently by the staff. It was our friends going away party leaving NYC and the staff treated us to the most amazing cheesecake for dessert. A fantastic night with fantastic service and the best gnocchi i have ever had.
One of our favorite restaurants - like Billy Joel says - We'll get a table near the street
In our old familiar place...I'll meet you any time you want
In our Italian Restaurant - food is always top notch, service is wonderful, and LOVE the people watching! All levels fantastic.
Lovely dinner at Grotta Azzurra. This place was recommended to us by people that live in NYC for years before retiring to SE Fla, so we gave it a try and really enjoyed the meal.
Anthony was our server and gave use great recommendations so we split a full Caesar salad (and it does come with anchovies). Then we split each others meals - The Veal Picata was out of this world, tasted great a was very tender. The Cannelloni comes in a huge portion made with home made pasta and sauces. We had plenty of leftovers but no re-fridge in the hotel room so it went to waste. Be aware -- the bread is out of this world fresh, so don't fill up on it before the real meal shows up.
We will be back to NYC and Grotta Azzurra is one of 2 restaurants on our 'We Got To Go Back To' list in a few month.
I wanted to go to an Italian restaurant with my 18 year old daughter and we decided to go to Grotta Azzurra because of the review I read online. I had a martini, it was okay not great. The focaccia bread was not that good. I read they bake bread on premises. Well it was cold when it arrived at our table and did not taste like it was freshly made. The fried calamari was ok not great. My daughter had chicken parmigiana she liked it. I had penne with puttanesca sauce it was not good. I ordered the tiramisu and it tasted like it had been in the refrigerator for 2 weeks and the cream tasted rancid. I had 3 bites and I could not eat any more of it. I was very disappointed.
Service was a little slow. One issue that bothered me I ordered off the fixed price menu, which included pasta. I ask for whole wheat pasta and was told it would be a $4 up charge. Really ? 100 I understand that restaurants do not like to substitute on the special menu, I would think that a whole wheat or gluten free option would be available at no additional charge.
