Grill 23 & Bar Ratings and Reviews
The place is very noisy without privacy considering the category of the restaurant. The staff is friendly but not excessively professional. The worst is the food. We ordered filet mignon that was not tender and too dry due to improper cooking. The same for the prime aged rib eye steak that was supposed to be the specialty of the house, extremely pricey and served without any side! The dishes were accompanied by terrible salad and uneatable sweet burned onions. I have never eaten a steak so disgusting and so pricey. I would not recommend this place.
We celebrated a family birthday at Grill 23. This is not a restaurant for every day dining, as it is extremely pricey! The decor is elegant and warm, and service very good. The best dish was the aged rib eye steak, which was awesome. Others of us ordered things other than beef (tuna, swordfish and chicken), and while this is definitely a steak house restaurant, I would have expected the grilled fish to be a bit more interesting or better prepared. I piece of white fish on a huge white plate is not that exceptional, especially when you have to pay for every side vegetable separately. But that is the steak house formula... A dessert of profiteroles with coffee and caramel was excellent.
We have gone to grill 23 every New Year’s Eve for the past seven year but this year it was over booked and the service was not very accommodating. Lack of checking on the table, wrong items, no idea who ordered what food, over cooked pork and very bad swordfish, but no one ever ask us how the food was even when one patron left an entire meal on their plate. Very disappointed in what has also been good service. Don’t over book next time a 530 reservation shouldn’t be that overwhelming to the staff and it sets up for a night of poor service
The steak tartare was a bit lacking in flavor, it had a kind of ketchup taste. The manager noticed we did not eat and was super nice about it and even took off the menu. My daughters salmon was good and son's steak was 'really good dad'. My steak, the aged NY strip, while seasoned good, was overcooked (ordered rare to the medium-rare and it was medium).
Service was very good. Good attention and friendly.
We have been to Grill 23 many times. We love it for the food, service, location near many hotels and theatres, and ambiance. Can't go wrong with the steaks and sides. The only thing I don't care for is the cold caramelized onions on the side. The wines and cocktails are great too.
Probably the best meal we have had in the year plus we have lived in Boston. We all go steaks and everyone raved about how good they were. The sides we excellent too, we got the mash potatoes, the fries and the brusselsprouts. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and we had an excellent bottle of Pinot Noir for ~$70. We shared two desserts that were very good. It isn't cheap to go there but for a special occasion (assuming you like steak), it is definitely worth checking out.
Our server was so much fun, he made it a special night for us. We take our sons annually to Christmas steak dinner. My husband and I have always gone to Grill 23, but will never visit again. Steak was over seasoned, spinach had a strange taste, and the truffles tater tots were nothing special. The salmon was excellent, but tiny. The food was such a disappointment. We went for a special occasion, but they did not deliver. Perhaps they have taken their following for granted over the years. Too bad.
We went during Christmas time and the way the restaurant was decorated was absolutely gorgeous. Great Job! Steak Frites with a side of mac & cheese. tastes great, cooked to perfection. the local oysters were amazing too. drinks could use some more liquor but everything else was great.
The steak was delicious. However, the side dishes and dessert were mediocre and the meal because of that in my opinion was not worth the cost. Not a great value. The waiters were excellent. I had not been to your restaurant in a while and am not likely to return soon.
My husband loves Grill 23. It has an amazing atmosphere and is elegant, old school Boston. If you want steak get it here, there is no better in the city.I am not always in the mood for beef and sadly I have found the fish to be grossly over priced and not worthy of the price tag. The desserts are very good. The service is amazing, spot on attentive waiters.
Overall experience is wonderful. We love going around Christmas, it is so festive and beautiful.
I ordered swordfish, it was the worst ever. Management immediately apologized and replaced it (no charge) with a tiny filet. The waiter was very self important and seemed just like he should be being served. Tooany other good choices in the city and the cost is not worth the lack of experience or poor food.
We keep trying to love Grill 23, but every time we go for a special occasion, there is some sort of kerfuffle and we end up leaving dissatisfied. Long wait times when you've made a reservation, way too noisy, understaffed, and over-priced food. Perhaps G23 is having financial difficulties - they are now charging $3 for sauce on your $50 steak?
We'll stick with the tried and true...Del Frisco, Capitol Grill, Moo, Ruths Chris, Boston Chops...all are well worth the visit.
When you dine at a restaurant this expensive everything should be a 10. Our waiter was performing his job efficiently while letting us know he wanted to turn the table over. The food was just OK? We all had the rib eye $59. Ok is not Ok. The desserts were also OK and looked like
they had been thrown on the plates. Many years have passed since my first visit to Grill 23 and many more will pass before I return.
