Grill 23 & Bar Ratings and Reviews
We celebrated the holidays with a special lunch at Grill 23. The food was delicious, the wine list the best in town, and the server (William a.k.a Bill) was extremely knowledgable and attentive. We had beet salad, chicken caesar, and their yummy short rib burger. I like going here for special occasions because the ambiance--the beautiful carved wood details, the white tablecloths, the ability to actually have a conversation and hear each other! Highly recommended.
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Grill 23. It's close to where I work and we proposed it for a small work dinner for end of year and for welcoming a new team member. The staff and ambience were comfortable and cozy. An elegant smart casual atmosphere. The food is delicious. A bit more expensive than usual restaurants we attend, but worth it is as a annual type of small meal event.
Each year to drive the 90 or so miles down the Mass Pike to spend a pre-holiday weekend in Boston. One of our first trip years ago included a visit to Grill 23, and while we have tried other places, nothing beats the ambience and holiday vibe of Grill 23 around Christmas time. Per usual the service, atmosphere and food were outstanding. Do yourself a favor and skip the rest and go straight to Grill 23.
Solid Steak Restaurant. Outstanding Wine List, but way overpriced. Small bar area not great for a Pre-Meal Drink with friends, maybe 10-12 bar seats, a tight fit. Valet Parking is great but totally overpriced at 21$. Servers are good but not overly personable. Food was well presented, hot and delicious. Dessert was also very good. Great place if you can business expense it. Otherwise it has to be a very special occasion.
Steak Tartare was my starter, followed by a Porterhouse ordered Medium Rare. Tartare was good, but could have used some nice Olive Oil on it to add some consistency. Steak was somewhat overcooked, not oily though; it was a bit over salted too. Both dishes were tasty and well presented. Sides included Tater Tots and Brussel Sprouts. Both were OK, not great. Dessert was a chocolate cake, nicely presented and delicious. The Wine was a 2013 Bruno Colin Santenay, Vieilles Vignes at 85$. Paired perfectly with our meals. No need to spend more than this. We were not rushed and people were not constantly asking us how our meal was...or taking plates off the table before we could finish...this is something I now appreciate.. It is a "professional steak house", you won't be disappointed in this respect.
Conclusion: A good Boston Brahmin place to eat near Copley Square. Upscale, a bit Snobby, and expensive...The kind of place where if someone else is paying you feel great. And if your paying you can still feel great just not as great. It will not be your "go to place", but it can be the place to take an important client, friend, wife, girlfriend or mistress. LOL Have FUN!
The decor is really splendid and it clearly is very popular. I think our mistake was booking on Saturday as it’s so packed that you are queued for the bar and we were seated 25 minutes after our slot - considering we arrived 25 mins early to ensure we were seated on time it was tedious. The waiter was very attentive and in fairness food was prompt. The food was well cooked but honestly not that special.
Everything that we had, aged rib-eye, filet mignon, house salad, was simply terrific. One drawback is the expense. The high-end steak, top of the ribeye, is $72. The 100-day aged ribeye is $59, a la carte. If the cost isn't a problem, the excellent food is worth it.
The service was friendly and prompt. Among our table of four there were three kinds of steak, all of which were prepared to our satisfaction. The hash browns were crispy; the fries were good, not great (ie not crispy enough); the brussel sprouts and salads were all delicious.
My first experience here was at the upstairs bar where I dined with a friend. It was so lovely I brought back some colleagues for a business meal. It was just as lovely. Wait staff (recommendations) , meal, ambiance, wine list was all superb. I highly recommend.
My wife and I typically have one "all-out" dinner per year at a steakhouse in Boston. This year, we picked Grill 23 and brought my parents and in-laws. You will spend a bit, but for special occasions, for us, it's worth it! Décor for the holidays was amazing, the wait staff was helpful, friendly, and knew exactly when to come over, and the food is second to none! For a special occasion, it's a dinner you will never forget. I recommend the ribeye!!
We were in the mood for a good steak and Grill 23 didn't disappoint. My husband splurged on the Wagyu Cap steak, a cut that was new to us and has a different texture than the usual steak. Our server Christopher was knowledgeable and answered our questions to help us choose our meals. The oysters were excellent, as was my steak frites.
The food is always outstanding. Don't skip the chowder. The problem is that, even with an apperitif, appetizer, entre, bottle of wine, and dessert, we had our check just over an hour after being seated. We never really felt rushed, but the pace of the meat was way too fast for an upscale night out.
Thanksgiving Day meal was average. Service was fair at best. The kitchen was Not flexible with the menu options. No person staffing the coat check despite several guests arriving and departing. With tip (20%), average cost was $111 per person. We won’t be back. My third visit to this iconic restaurant and I have been disappointed every time. Too bad—we dine out frequently and Davios around the corner will continue to receive our business.
I’m sorry, but I am disappointed that this is apparently one of the best steakhouses in Boston. The standard is well above the standard fare for Boston but that standard seems to be well below par for the rest of the USA east coast let alone the world and not worthy of the price. The meat was good quality but unfortunately not prepared to the same standard. There is no option for mustards or other typical additions to a steak instead they have sauces that lacked flavour that you pay additional for. The premises and ambience are nice and that side of things is well done as is the service but the kitchen lets the whole thing down and honestly is not worth the premium price you will pay...having recently eaten a much better steak for a lower price in the heart of New York (Manhattan) I can only feel disappointed....
The food was very good. Our waiter very not very attentive. My porter house was overcooked and the waiter or the manager did not apologize for the mistake. I ordered a medium rare and it was well done. If this was not a high end steakhouse I would not be as picky.
Busy, vibrant place with great service and amazing food. Can't go wrong with their various cuts of steak here. A little loud for an intimate meal/date, but would be great with a group of friends/family for a lively celebration. Finished off with a great bread pudding and chocolate layer cake.
