Have been there 3-4 times, and the food has been consistently good, with fresh ingredients. Tried the 1/4 roasted chicken with a citrus glaze and loved it.
Everything great until we were the second to last table left AT NINE PM (not late!!) and the server began putting chairs upended on tables and closing down. WHILE WE WERE STILL FINISHING OUR MEAL AND WINE. I literally haven't seen that since going to a diner. Come on, people! I'll come back, but this better not happen again.
We made a reservation about noon and arrived at 6pm to be seated immediately. Service (by the bar tender!) was great, the food came in a reasonable time. the food was great and we stayed and talked for over two hours! recommended.
I have dined at this restaurant several times and have noticed that it struggles with consistency.
This was my second time here and really enjoyed it again. Had the best quesadilla ever. With chicken and green chilies, so flavorful. Loved the blistered Padron peppers as an appetizer. And the roast chicken my husband had was moist and super tasty. Our friends both enjoyed their food. This is a California Mexican restaurant, so foodie focused. The only issue was our waiter had multiple jobs, bussing, waiting, hosting. Perhaps someone did not show up for work. So he forgot our drinks, but otherwise was very helpful and accommodating. Would return next time in San Rafael.
Great food, atmosphere, and service. We've been here 4 or 5 times and varied our selection and never been disappointed.
Was not impressed but I'm Mexican , guacamole was the best, Pozole was all hominy no meat
Disappointing. Slow service not enough servers for a Saturday
This was my second time here and both times were completely disappointing. First off, the waitress is a complete space cadet. I was there with a friend I hadn't seen in awhile. We checked out the menu and each ordered a plate. Took a while to get the food and when it arrived, only one order arrived. We had asked the waitress questions about the menu and she confirmed both plates with us. So I sit there wondering where my food was,it was pretty busy at lunch but that is no excuse to serve one guest and not the other. We finally flagged down the man server and asked him where my food was. He acted dumbfounded and a bit rude, meanwhile my friend's food is getting cold, waiting for me to get my lunch. Finally, some chick who almost dropped the heavy plate before she slammed it down in front of me showed up with my lunch. It looked like it was haphazardly thrown on the plate.
No apologies, no offer to compensate us in anyway, I couldn't believe it. I ordered the tamales and they were heavy and seemed like they were sitting around for who knows how long.
Ok we made it thru that obnoxious ordeal...I have to add that I felt sick for hours after eating there. I will never return, I will let my friends know because it's not inexpensive and we were treated extremely rude. I'm very sorry we chose Green Chili today. If you've ever been to Austin, you will know that this isn't Tex-Mex food.
We love Green Chile for its casual atmosphere and richly flavored dishes. Our favorites are the chile relleno, the posole the shrub drinks, & the seasonal specials. This is our ideal spot for a low key high flavors evening out.
We've eaten at Green Chili many times, but the service was bizarrely bad on Saturday for our table. Took 1 hour plus to get our food -- received multiple and different excuses -- very strange. In the end, a couple round of drinks were comped and we received a discount on our bill. We appreciated the gesture and will return. However, if we have this experience again, it will likely be our last visit.
The manager was terrific in making sure our party or 10 was taken care of. Our server helped to get us out on time but we never felt hurried. The food was terrific, wonderful flavours and fresh ingredients.
Second time there. Last one for me. Service took a while to get going. We were ignored after we joined our friends already seated even though we were greeted at the door. The steak in my salad was over cooked, dry and tasteless. The other elements of the salad were unremarkable and the dressing had no flavor. Too oily. Not enough acid.
Fish tacos are amazing! Try the salsas
Delicious! We had a great meal here earlier this week. The quinoa bowl with tofu and beans was yummy, the tamales delicious and the Christmas nachos we started with were very yummy. The only negative was that we were seated near the door next to the bar and it was very cold whenever it was left open by a staff member. Our waitress graciously closed it when we asked, but others repeatedly left it open resulting in some chilly breezes. I would recommend sitting away from this door if you get cold easily. Otherwise, we had a very good dinner and will be back.
Delicious food, sparse service. Server apologized, but hey, it's the holidays and resto could have been properly staffed. Huge portions! Chicken enchilada was amazing. Not typical rolled tortilla with filling; it seemed to be masa that had melded with the most delicious chicken stew ever. Fish tacos had single, small, thin flour tortillas that could not hold the filling, so a bit messy, but tasty. Faux margarita made with agave wine was terribly sweet ~ I asked server if I could have one without mixer, but she said they were batch prepared ahead of time. Don't bother unless you like syrup. I will go back, but probably would share a platter. Lots of interesting things on the menu.
So happy Green Chile Kitchen came north. New Mexico's favorite dishes bring me back time and again. Friendly staff. Nice interior. Love their posole and flat enchiladas. Great sauces. New Mexico's best champagne.
I took a pal out to lunch. He had the pasole and liked it a lot. I had the Chile Relleno with mild red sauce dinner (i.e. with black beans and rice) and it was dandy. Had a little iced tea as well. I was disappointed that there wasnt a simple sweet available for dessert. Just pie and something else that I can't remember.
Excellent all the way around. Don't miss the Green Chile Apple pie. Solid value but not inexpensive. Heartily recommended.
Wonderful food and service.
great food, different than other mexican restaurants
really great service
Visiting San Rafael for a couple of months and have tried many of the local restaurants. To date, Green Chile has been the best experience we've had since arriving three weeks ago. Their service level is outstanding and food simply amazing. Will be visiting again!
High palate tasting here, with Santa Fe style dishes, casual yet pulled together place with good drinks as well.
We love this Restaurant. The food is so good and service is excellent. All staff here is super friendly. Our waitress was the best.
Green Chili is always a treat. The food is fresh, healthy and full of interesting tastes and textures. You can just go for appetizers and make these into a meal, while getting to sample more from the menu.
MY go to San Rafael favorite. cool art studios attached and super interesting take on Mexican cuisine! Try the spicy lemonade and the Carne Adovada.
Second or third time there. Took my New Mexico-raised wife who pronounced it excellent and authentic. Me, I just liked it a lot. Throw in the excellent service and reasonable prices....
We we love this place. Keep up the good work. Watermelon margaritas are the best!!
We have eaten here a few times and the service is extremely inefficient. From entry to exit - very little customer acknowledgment. It seems the bar should have a person present at all times to serve and provide drinks. They were missing in action and visiting on the floor. Plates were removed and the table was not wiped down without asking. Needs better management training. Otherwise the food was good. But w/out good service , why return?
Amazing food, super fun place, love it!!
So happy to have discovered this restaurant right on 4th Stree in downtown San Rafael. Outstanding posole and blue corn tortilla. Excellent kale salad -- will definitely order it again. Will also return to check out breakfast and dinner.
Best new Mexican cuisine outside of Santa Fe!
The staff were amazing the food was fabulous the atmosphere perfect! Highly recommend!
Absolutely fabulous food (with options for carnivores, vegetarians, and gluten-free folks) along with varied and enticing drink choices, and excellent service. Kudos!
Loved the green chili stew and Corazon margarita! Jacinto was a fantastic waiter. He has been our waiter the two times we have eaten there.
The kitchen messed up our order twice, but the waitstaff made it right.
I like the food, but the wait service is terrible - our server was having dinner at the bar and never came to get our order. We flagged down another server who seemed surprised that we wanted to place a dinner order - where is the restaurant manager who should be keeping an eye on service? Neither server came to check on us again. The table bussers were very nice and helpful, unfortunately the wait staff isn't . This has happened several time, and i don't think we'll be back. In addition, the prices are quite high, you should reconsider charging for chips & salsa, and have some enticement for people to come in and feel like they are getting a good deal. I've given this place more than a few chances, but they've lost us as customers, unfortunate since we live only a few blocks away.
Unusual Mexican food. Just be clear with the waitress about the heat level of the food, as in spiciness.
Finally wised-up and made a reservation to eat here, after 2 failed attempts as a walk-in. It was worth the effort. My chile rellenos were fantastic, my husband's combination plate was delicious, and the peanut butter pie for dessert (which we had to have after spotting our neighbor's) made a tasty end to the meal. Light, fresh sauces and the use of blue corn as a base for tortillas, tamales etc. made this one of the tastiest Mexican meals we've had in a long while.
