   The high aiming menu gave way to high achieving food. Although the Great Northern has the appearance of a pub, it offers bistro style food which was much appreciated. The ambience was that of a warm & welcoming pub.

   To set the seen, we popped in the week before on the off chance for a Sunday roast, only to be told the restaurant was fully booked! We thought this was good sign, so booked up for following Sunday. Arrived and greeted by a friendly staff and great choice of wines - always a good start. The Menu was limited, however, perfect for our requirements. The roasts are lovely, and taste like a proper home cooked dinner - just what was needed. My only criticism is the size of the portions - these are on the small side and we came away feeling hungry! You can order additional sides, which helps, but this pushes the roasts to near on £20 per head - expensive for what it is and more than prime steak house across the way. Would come back again, but would like to see larger portions - a few more spuds and vegetables would suffice! Apart from this, I'd recommend this pub.

   Sunday Lunch was fine - we booked for 12pm and the staff were just opening up so the place not quite ready. Friendly staff, food reasonably priced and served quickly.

   The Great Northern is conveniently situated next to the Odyssey cinema in St Albans and is a great place to have a meal before the film. The food is of a very high standard but portions are reasonably sized so the prices are reasonable. The menu is kept short as everything is cooked from fresh and this makes choosing much easier. It includes a great burger and they can accommodate gluten free. There are only a few tables so it’s best to book.

   The Great Northern pub is next door to the Odyssey cinema which is why we went there. There is a fixed price menu. The waiter was friendly and helpful, particularly about my need to be wheat free. The food is excellent and they have only a small number of tables so getting through dinner before the film was not a problem. We will be going back again.

   Sunday roast: beef was delicious. Starter: £7.50 and couldn't find the goats cheese in the salad, total rip off! Soup: tinned surely! Coffee machine broken! Along the corridor to the toilets is a makeshift sink area, heap of horribly dirty grey/black towels on floor, and our dishes from our previous course, made me wish I'd checked the hygiene rating. Don't bother.

   Good Gastro pub style food, fair price but not sure why they won the best restaurant award... They served us a mix of pieces of bread, brioche a bit stain but overall ok. Service friendly but food always a bit long to arrive

   Second time,both times good food,good service,good price. Interesting location for gourmet food but we liked it.

   A short simple pre-cinema menu provided us with just enough choice for a delicious early supper. Great value.
