I don’t usually write reviews but we loved this place. Food was amazing. We got the cavatelli & house made ravioli with the buffalo mozzarella to start. It was all delish. Wine was on point too. It was my boyfriends birthday and they brought us a little scoop of vanilla gelato with olive oil and sea salt - so good. Very sweet staff & overall great time! The jams were a little loud, but I didn’t care because they were playing TV on the radio and tame impala! Cant wait to come back!

We went back a few times and it’s ok. I really wanted our last visit to be spectacularly but it really was just ok. For the price , the hype, it’s probably not a destination we will be frequenting

The food was wonderful - we ordered the tomato bread, the rigatoni, and the chop salad. All of it was tasty and hearty :) The house red wine was also great. Would definitely go back!

An Italian restaurant slightly misplaced in the Mission amongst the many taquerias. Once inside the warm interior and smiling faces put you at ease and it's easy to sink into the comfortable, relaxed setting. Fresh, seasonal and locally farmed food explains the natural, robust flavors. From the caesar salad with crushed croutons and light but ample dressing to the charred Dirty Girl Farm broccoli, represent well the tasty starters/sides. The papparddelle ragu bolognese is made in the traditonal style with chicken liver and no tamotoa sauce is delicious. The eggplant parmesan is baked and served in a ramekin. The portions are just right. FInally, the service is excellent. The only issue I have is the name...Great Gold...really? There must be a compelling story...

I ate here Monday, and again on Thursday. Monday I enjoyed the chicken parmesan even though I felt it coulda used more sauce. Because it doesn't come with pasta, and since they make their own pasta in house, I returned. This time I split a huge Caesar salad. I loved it. Had the spaghetti and meat meatballs. It ranks up there with Emmy's. Big time yum. My partner wants to return to explore the wine list. I'll return for the food, but not on a Monday, as the music was noticeable louder, too loud for easy chatting. Thursday they seemed understaffed but handled the crowd with aplomb.

All the pastas and bread were excellent. My only complaint was the crispy Porchetta, which was almost inedible and had very little meat in it. Chicken Parmesan and all the pastas were excellent, great value, but Porchetta needs some work

We had to wait 20 min for our table despite the reservation.
Took a long time for drinks and so so bread, it was an hour from reservation time to dinner set on table.
It seemed like everyone was sitting waiting a long time for each course to arrive, they definitely have kitchen/organizational problems.
Why are they wasting effort on frequent pacing door dash delivery guys, a blight on atmosphere and probably contributing to poor service.

Overall, our experience was a solid "fair". I generally only care about food when reading reviews. So I'll start there. It's supposed to be American Italian comfort food. However, much of the food tasted terribly bland. Maybe the kitchen had an off night? Maybe they swung the recipes too much to the American side? Their chicken parm tasted like I ordered it at grubby roadside diner from a gum-smacking waitress yelling orders to a sweaty cook in a grease stained apron. The breading was pale with no seasoning. The tomato sauce tasted canned...the plain kind...not even with oregeno in it. It started sad in my mouth and by the end had evolved to offensive. The Cesar salad lacked dressing and any kick. The menu said it had anchovy, but you couldn't see any and could barely taste any in the sauce. The kale leave were way too rubbery. Given that it took almost 30 minutes for the salad to come out, you'd think they would have let them soften in the dressing first. We didn't order their namesake tomato bread, but I saw several tables underwhelmed by that mass of dough and flat-flavored sauce. The best things we tried were the buccatini ala matriciana and the broccoli side. Both of those at least had some flavor. Nothing to write your American-born Italian grandmother about it in Jersey though. I expected a lot more from the Flour + Water team. Feels like they half-assed this one. As for the other elements of the experience. It took an unseemly amount of time between our dishes. Not even the free olives could make up for waiting almost 30 minutes for our salad to arrive. Also the concept of the food seems to be mismatched with the decor of the place. Down home Italian with super modern trappings. Whatever, I'm not an interior designer. I do, however, know good food. Unfortuntely this was "meh" at best.

Found out about this place through the list of places on Restaurant Week’s website. I figured a modern Italian kitchen in the mission couldn’t go wrong. Well, I had a gut feeling it’d be weird because of the decor and I should have listened to it. Yes, it was a weird night and the servers tried to make up for it, but we had to wait 45 min to be seated after arriving with a reservation, it took 90 min (so 45 more min) to get our first appetizer, and everything was decent but not remarkable. The broccoli side was promising, but ended up being extremely salty. The Bolognese was tasty but needed a bit more salt and fat in it for flavor. The 3 glasses of red we had were all disappointing, though the Sangiovese was less so. Last, the place was LOUD and uncomfortable. Too loud to hear your dining partner and uncomfortable in that the restaurant design seems like it belongs in a suburban town’s downtown. It was not up to par with SF dining. As an Italian citizen who loves the mission, I had high hopes. They were not met. I wouldn’t go here again or send friends. The redeeming quality of this place were the servers. They tried their best despite knowing they’re on a losing team. This makes me sad to write, but I don’t want anyone wasting an evening when you have so many other amazing places nearby.

Someone is cooking grandma's recipes and doing it very well. We enjoyed crowd-pleasers like the loaded focaccia, the eggplant parm, and the spaghetti and meatballs with perfectly al dente pasta, as well as the totally addictive chicory Caesar salad and the roasted broccoli with bagna caudal sauce. Well-matched wine list and friendly, attentive service rounded out our experience, we can't wait to return.

This was our second time at this restaurant. ?There were some glitches, but overall, this is a gem of a restaurant. The sunflower Cesar kale salad is to die for. It's not like a traditional Cesar, but it is in the same ballpark, and the flavors explode in your mouth. Big enough for two to share. I had the radiator, with house made sausage, and the sausage was as good as any I've ever had. My wife ordered gluten free pasta aglio y olio, and it came heaped with shaved parmesan (she didn't want that) and it wasn't gluten free. When they replaced it with a gluten free version, it just tasted like olive oil and no other flavor--certainly not garlic. This was a far cry from the excellent dish she had the first time we went there. Our dining mates had chicken Millinaise and eggplant parmesan, respectively, and they raved about both dishes. We shared a crispy porchetta. It was quite flavorful, but not worth the $25 price tag. Because of the mix-up on the pasta, they didn't charge us for it, and comped 20% of the meal. Classy. This is a true neighborhood gem and I look forward to many more meals there.

Went on a double date on a Friday night and had a wonderful experience. The other couple was running late and the Great Gold team was very gracious about it. Once they arrived we ordered starters and our main dishes and timing the food was brought to the table was perfect. All of our dishes were delicious and we all plan to be repeat guests. Bravo!

Loved this place! We arrived 6pm on a Tuesday and were one of two tables seated. Within 20 minutes, all tables were full including the bar. We ordered focaccia, butternut squash ravioli that were so good we ordered seconds, and eggplant. My husband and son also ordered the fresh pasta with red sauce (yum), meatball, and a chicken dish. All our plates were licked clean! Highly recommend for the food and ambiance.

The atmosphere was cold and slightly funky which did not enhance the feeling of a red sauce joint, which is purports to be. The musical play list, presented on a slip of paper, also failed to contribute to any semblance of an Italian mood. Caesar salad had an unusual and nice crunch from sunflowers, but the chopped salad lacked crispness and crunch. The portions were small for the price. The chicken milanese, although nicely battered, had absolutely no sauce, no capers, no lemon, nada. No bread was offered, which seems like blasphemy with nice red sauce to dip leftover from the eggplant parmesan. So, we ordered the focaccia, which never came. Long gaps occurred between courses. The house red lacked substance. Pasta itself tastes fresh and home-made, but the entire experience lacked cohesion and vitality.

The staff were wonderful from the waitress to the bus persons. The waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful with our dining choices. The decor was fun - sophisticated but not pretentious, retro yet contemporary. But the best thing was the pasta!! Made in-house and DELICIOSO!! Even my vegetarian mother had nothing but superlatives regarding the food. And they even have a curated music list! Highly recommended!!

The homemade pastas are really the thing to have here. We had the crab with Alfredo sauce & the meatballs. Lovely big tasty meatballs!

Three of us also shared a chopped salad which was so large that we left almost half uneaten. It might have all been finished if the dressing hadn’t been quite so vinegary.

The house wine was very good & the tiramisu was perfect! Just the right balance of coffee & chocolate flavor.

How spectacular can grilled broccoli or pasta be? At Great Gold, highly spectacular. The grilled broccoli w bagna cauda and breadcrumbs was the stuff of culinary dreams--my final bite was as eye-rolling good as my first. The focaccia was crispy on the outside, and meltingly tender on the inside. The cavatappi pasta with cauliflower shreds and cacio a pepe was unctuous and lovely. I hate eggplant and my companion's personal little casserole of eggplant parmesan was tempting even for me. A spendy wine list and slow service (really, TWO servers for an entire dining room?) keeps this from being a 5-star home run all the way down the line, but just breathe while you wait to be served and the food will be worth the wait.

The food was incredibly delicious, but service was really disappointing. We had a reservation for 7 for my dad’s 70th bday and arrived 3-4 mins late from our reservation (I called them to inform them and apologize 10 mins before reservation time) and ended up waiting 30 mins to sit down. They poured complimentary prosecco though, which was a nice gesture. However, we weren’t checked often at all on our water, emptied plates or more beverages and so it really elongated our stay even more beyond the 30min delay to sit down to our table. This was when there were very little people in the restaurant, and meanwhile, our waitress was visibly dancing around in the back near the kitchen entrance. There was some sass from a male host/waiter. Obviously no one enjoys waiting on large parties — a few of us work in the service industry — but our whole party was friendly and patient the entire time, so it was disappointing that the service wasn’t great when the kitchen made delicious food.
