About Grassroots (fka Deleece)

Grassroots is a family owned neighborhood eatery featuring simple, yet delicious farm to table comfort food, in a warm, inviting atmosphere adjacent to the Mercury Theater and just four doors north of the Music Box Theatre. Our new chef, Tony Albanese, comes to us with true "farm to table" experience as he was lead banquet chef at Heritage Prairie Farms. Most recently he was sous chef at Tessori. He is excited and proud to bring his blend of "farm to table" new American and classic Italian cuisines to Grassroots.

We serve dinner every night, and brunch Saturday and Sunday.

Not a great experience overall. Went for Sunday brunch and despite there being only one other table, we waited forever for our food. My veggie omelet was good, but my friends were not happy with their meals. One friend ordered the grilled chicken sandwich...it came smothered in aioli and the roll was so saturated she couldn’t eat it. They took it off the bill but still charged her $2 for the side salad it came with. My other friend ordered a different chicken sandwich which was over dried and hard as a rock. The French fries were also so hard she couldn’t eat them. We won’t be coming back.

I thought this place was better in its previous incarnation as Deleece. The area around the Music Box could really use more dining options, and Deleece used to be the best option. Grassroots is by no means bad, but the food is absolutely middle-of-the-road; the names and descriptions on the menu make the dishes sound even more unimaginative than they are, so it's partly an issue of presentation. My pork chop was just okay, and the three friends I ate with seemed similarly satisfied but unimpressed. Not at all a place to avoid but I coudln't earnestly recommend it, either.

That was a disappointment. I don' say it often, but there is nothing specifically good I can say about this dinner, even ater a great show in theater next door. The service was okay, but the food was not. Brussels sprouts salad as dry as the name suggests and the added peace of beef was not chewable even after returning back from additional cooking. I looked around while people were leaving for the show - unfinished food on almost every plate.
There is a plenty of other options around Mercury Theater and I won't be returning to Grassroots next time.

The service was really slow here. Food was good but everything took a long time to receive. This is difficult when you have children with as they don't have patience anyway.

Had a one-of-a-kind experience at Grassroots for my birthday. The owner, John, went above and beyond to make our experience special, and the food & cocktails were out of this world. Quickly becoming my favorite restaurant in Chicago.

My 2 girlfriends and I were in Chicago from Ohio. Using Yelp we decided to have dinner at Grassroots. It was delicious. We had the vegetable risotto, trout, and hamburger. Each one of us raved about our dinners. After tasting each other's dinner we agreed everything was very good.

The service was wonderful. When we arrived they asked if we were going to a theater in the area (yes) and what time was the show. They asked so they could prioritize tables so everyone would make their show.

We enjoyed it so much we considered going back the next night but decided to explore another restaurant.

Great spot for dinner before a play at Mercury theatre. Did get sat between two other couples even though many other tables open. Calamari and Cuban sandwich were very good and great wine list.

Overall, we were disappointed and we don't intend to return. My girlfriend's virgin bloody Mary was unappealing in taste and presentation. The cocktail menu, generally, was not what you would expect in a restaurant that wants to be taken seriously. My empty coffee cup was completely ignored. The menu items were no more than average. Generally, a waste of time.

My friend and I went to Grassroots after seeing the musical Hair, right next door at the Mercury Theatre. We were delighted to find out that the gentleman who sat us was the owner and chatted with him about the history and vision of the restaurant.

The food and service were wonderful. I had the salmon and Sharon had the rainbow trout. Yum!

We sat outside and loved to be able to people watch and take in the city.

Two pescatarians able to enjoy a wonderful meal here. They were able to remove meat from dishes that ordinarily called for it, to great success. The host was very pleasant and informative when we were seated, but the waiter/service was a little slow. We will definitely go back, but might prefer to sit inside so we're not forgotten.

I wanted to love it but just OK farm to table menu/food. In addition, the atmosphere is disappointing as it is simply a pre-theater diner. It needs to separate itself from that and focus a bit more on the food and get a couple more waiters.

Disappointing. Ordered the beef hash. This is my go-to dish when I get brunch, but the food here was bland. Meat was overcooked. My friend ordered the breakfast burrito. It was ok. Flavor was decent, but there wasn't much filling in the tortilla.

This was the worst experience I had while visiting Chicago. The restaurant was located near Wrigley Field, which was the ONLY redeeming quality of this place. Everything we ordered came out incorrectly. The avocado toast intially came out with eggs on, and neither of us ordered with eggs. We sent them back...and when they delivered the food again they simply scraped off the eggs and brought them back. COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS. The server took off $10, but there was still eggs all over it. Appreciative but defeated the point. Aside from all this, there was zero accommodation for those with any type of allergies. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE VEGETARIAN OR VEGAN.

Would love to see more meat and dairy free options on the menu. Specific requests were discouraged by our server. Is it true that "the chef does not enjoy making vegan risotto"?

Went to dinner with a girlfriend on a sunny summer Wednesday. We sat outside on their front patio. It was lovely! The food exceeded my expectations - I ordered the carmelized salmon and my friend ordered the lobster mac & cheese - we both scarfed it down! Absolutely delicious. The wait staff was soooo on top of it. They were extremely friendly, refilling our waters all the time. Everyone was super polite. We both ordered cocktails, which we liked and were in the $10 price range, which I personally think is a good deal for a cocktail in Chicago, I'm generally prepared to spend around $14 per cocktail. We both walked away totally satisfied and feeling like it was a great value!

This is a good option for pre-theater dining. We shared meatballs, veggie risotto and shrimp linguini and all were decent. Linguini was the best of the three. Staff is pleasant and attentive. When it filled up it got pretty loud with voices.

We picked Grassroots because it was near the Mercury Theater. We might give it another try if we head to the theatre again, however, the food was just not that good. Our fish (trout) had no taste and and the salad to start was boring and just ok. The waitstaff is very good and especially friendly. We hope it does well. Sitting outside on a lovely summer evening would be even nicer with better food.
