About Grassroots (fka Deleece)
Grassroots is a family owned neighborhood eatery featuring simple, yet delicious farm to table comfort food, in a warm, inviting atmosphere adjacent to the Mercury Theater and just four doors north of the Music Box Theatre. Our new chef, Tony Albanese, comes to us with true "farm to table" experience as he was lead banquet chef at Heritage Prairie Farms. Most recently he was sous chef at Tessori. He is excited and proud to bring his blend of "farm to table" new American and classic Italian cuisines to Grassroots.

Grassroots (fka Deleece) Ratings and Reviews
Perhaps it was just an off night, our waiter was also the bartender, someone else brought the food and at first gave us the food for a nearby table. The restaurant was not the least bit crowded. At the end of our meal we ordered coffee. It was awful, made me think of office coffee at the end of the day when someone forgot to turn the pot off, When asked he did take it off the bill.
Dined here before a movie ar the MusicBox - we were late, they were so nice! They brought our food quickly, so we didn’t miss the movie opening. And the food was delicious - fresh, creative, satisfying and right-priced. Must try the sweet potato carmelized onion tart. Cocktails were good. Service was above excellent - attentive and fast without being intrusive. Will definitely go back!
Liked the personal welcome by the owner, and his investment in our enjoying ourselves. The food and drink were very well-prepared and tasty (fried olives) and savory tart and seafood linguine. The waiter was friendly and helpful but seemed a little harried. Would definitely come back especially after a movie at the Music Box. Like the transition from Deleece to Grassroots.
Located adjacent to the Mercury Theater, Grassroots provides an excellent dining experience before a show. The restaurant was crowded, and it took a while before our dinner was served, but the staff did make certain that it arrived in time for us to catch the performance. The dishes are creatively prepared and served, and the pastas are homemade (perhaps accounting for the relatively long wait.) If you give yourself 90 minutes before the show, you should be able to enjoy an excellent dinner without feeling rushed. Reasonably priced and definitely recommended.
The restaurant was loud and the wait staff was not attentive, not even the host as we walked through the door. Our waiter seemed overly stressed and rushed and did not tell us about the wine specials. The food was ok. Our calamari was over done and overly crunchy almost to the point of being inedible. The steak tacos were good. Having been to the restaurant when it was Deleece and greatly enjoying it, it was a huge disappointment to experience Grassroots.
Had the most comically slow lunch here - over 2 hours. We waited to order, to get drink refills, to get food, to get the bill. ..it was a long wait for everything, and no apologies were made by the staff. It wasn't busy at all when we were there. The food was fine, but not great. While my friend was talking, a server came and took her plate away with food still on it - she wasn't done eating, and the server never asked.
The food was wonderful and the service was outstanding! We went after a show the Music Box so it was the perfect location and pleasant surprise to find this gem just up the street! Plus it takes reservations which is hard to find in that Southport corridor area! Can't wait to go back for brunch!
Super disappointing... waited 15 minutes to be seated (with a reservation). Ended up being seated at a table tjat was open the whole time we waited to be seated. Waited 25 minutes for our breakfast. Eggs were way over done to the point they had brown pan marks on them. Shrimp on my salad wrre under done and not edible. Coffee was not well made and bitter.
It was a bad experience. My toddler’s Mac and cheese (from kid’s menu) had pieces of jalapeño which made it too spicy for kids. My wife’s breakfast skillet had burnt beef and Toppings missing (eg melted cheese). When we complained, the waitress apologized and said the chef was preparing for a 33person table so could not redo the dishes but she brought some shredded cheese on the side and did not charge for the Mac and cheese. The quality was poor. We are not coming back.
I had been going to Deleece as an annual tradition since the 90's. I always ordered the Breakfast Pasta. This year, I invited friends who wanted to celebrate my birthday with me. I am so embarrassed that I did. They were so very, very disappointed. 1. The place was EMPTY. 2. The food took FOREVER to arrive. 3. The Bloody Mary's we believe contained no alcohol, or if did, a scarce shot, 4. The Bloody Mary was served without CELERY 5. The bar ran out of Olives, 6. The food was NOT the correct temperature, less than warm. 7. The food looked horrible; a. the hash browns were flipped once, burnt in one spot and not at all cooked in other areas, b. the scarce spinach was placed falling off the muffin, c. the hollandaise sauce also missed the poached egg yet was all over the plate. 8. It took FOREVER to get the check. 9. I notated within the reservation that I made that this was a special occasion-my birthday. NO mention was made from the staff wishing me a Happy Birthday or give a little cake. Lastly, the very special Breakfast Pasta was not on the menu. I had craved it the whole morning. Sad it is no longer offered, but would have been over it, if the 8 other things did not happen. I have no reason now, to recommend, nor go back to what was once a special and beloved restaurant.
Went to see a musical at Mercury Theatre. Grassroots was right next door so very convenient. Very friendly and very good service. We were a group of five so we tried three different appetizers . The deep fried olives were very good . Bruschetta was different but good. Bacon mousse was ok but hard to spread on the croustinis. The oven roasted chicken breast was excellent which i had.Two people had the hanger steaks with bourdelaise sauce , the steaks were very good but sauce was bland. One person had the Margarita pizza that she liked.Deserts were ok.
This restaurant is next door to the Mercury Theater, thus making it perfect for before or after a performance. While the food was very good, we waited 45 minutes before we had so much as a cracker. We were also disappointed to find that at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon, only items on the brunch menu were available--nothing from the lunch menu. A convenient, but mediocre experience.
Service was fine but it took somewhat longer between being seated and ordering than we anticipated, especially since it was not busy at that time. The hash was excellent; omelettes were OK; breakfast sandwich was good; hash browns could have been more crispy; the pizza with bacon came without the bacon on it. The server brought the bacon as a side dish to correct the error. Overall, it was fine but not great.
From the moment we entered we felt like we had come home. The staff, including the owner, were super attentive to our needs. All of the food we tried came out flawlessly prepared. The use of local seasonal ingredients was spot on. My wife had a delicious pizza and I loved the pork. Our appetizer and dessert were absolutely delicious, as were the cocktails from the bar. I look forward to going back and seeing what the rest of the menu has to offer. If you liked Deleece when it was there you will love Grassroots!
Not a great experience overall. Went for Sunday brunch and despite there being only one other table, we waited forever for our food. My veggie omelet was good, but my friends were not happy with their meals. One friend ordered the grilled chicken sandwich...it came smothered in aioli and the roll was so saturated she couldn’t eat it. They took it off the bill but still charged her $2 for the side salad it came with. My other friend ordered a different chicken sandwich which was over dried and hard as a rock. The French fries were also so hard she couldn’t eat them. We won’t be coming back.
I thought this place was better in its previous incarnation as Deleece. The area around the Music Box could really use more dining options, and Deleece used to be the best option. Grassroots is by no means bad, but the food is absolutely middle-of-the-road; the names and descriptions on the menu make the dishes sound even more unimaginative than they are, so it's partly an issue of presentation. My pork chop was just okay, and the three friends I ate with seemed similarly satisfied but unimpressed. Not at all a place to avoid but I coudln't earnestly recommend it, either.
That was a disappointment. I don' say it often, but there is nothing specifically good I can say about this dinner, even ater a great show in theater next door. The service was okay, but the food was not. Brussels sprouts salad as dry as the name suggests and the added peace of beef was not chewable even after returning back from additional cooking. I looked around while people were leaving for the show - unfinished food on almost every plate.
There is a plenty of other options around Mercury Theater and I won't be returning to Grassroots next time.
