Great stop before dinner at the Mercury. Salads were not huge so you could order a salad and a small plate and still have room for dessert and not feel stuffed or have to take home. Brussels sprouts dish was fantastic and I was glad our waiter recommended it. Reasonable prices. Wait staff works to get you to theater on time.
They should list dairy in their menu for those who do not eat dairy
Food was tasty with moderate portions. The room was quite noisy and service was a bit slow.
Excellent food and nice location. Good place for family outing.
We had a good time
It was disappointing to find that there is no beer on tap...only cans (yuck) and bottles.
Soon as we walked in the room they were making sure everything was perfect. Service and ownership went the extra mile. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Excellent.
The atmosphere was interesting and low key chic. First time. Loved this place.
I was there before going to the Mercury Theatre, which is in the same building, for the first time and was impressed with the service and the food. Sean was behind the bar and recommended a tasty wine. I was impressed that he actually tasted it before he poured a taste for me as the bottle was already open and presumably he wanted to make sure it had not gone sour. He also recommended the shrimp and linguini which was very flavorful and amazing light for a pasta dish. Grassroots had good control over the portion size which was right on target. I wholly recommend the place particularly if you are going to the theatre.
The cocktails are delicious and the food phenomenal. I had the elderflower martini and my husband had the Manhattan and both we so good, we ordered a second round. We started with the mussels and then I had walleye (so good) and my husband had the steak frites (also rocked). There were two problems. First, there was music coming from the kitchen and different music in the dining room and both were the same volume, which was annoying. Second, the bartender was also our waiter and multi-tasking wasn't his forte. We'll definitely go back--hopefully they will get the music and staffing sorted out before that.
Food was good, atmosphere is nice, but service was poor. The place was about half full when we were there. We split a salad, appetizer (grilled veggie bruschetta) , and the caramelized salmon entree. All was good. Took forever to get our drinks (as a result, we were told they would be on the house but they were on our bill) and they attempted to deliver several items to our table that were for other tables. Ordered 2 desserts but only received 1. We had to leave for a show before they could get us the 2nd one.
Dinner for two pre-show next to Mercury Theater was beyond our expectations. We were greeted and seated right away. Appetizers of a type of vegetable Bruschetta and fried olives were really tasty and well presented. We had the salmon as entree and it was perfect. It was very tasty and the owner explained the salmon they use is a high quality sustainable Farro Island fish. It was served on top of black rice and something else that was awesome but I can't remember what it was. A really nice experience.
A convenient, decent post-theater dinner spot, next door to Mercury Theater, though I can’t rave about the entire meal my friend and I had. The grilled Romaine salad with chicken added, was the best part, quite tasty but small. The wine & cocktails were good. The disappointment was the pizza we ordered as our main course, which was extremely small, light, and very skimpy on cheese—more like a pastry that might be served as an appetizer.
Food was great! However, it took over an hour to get a hamburger and a chopped salad. Unacceptable.
The manager was very accommodating in seating our group, which included young children, in a good location for us. The waitress was very busy with multiple tables, but provided us with good service, was prompt with beverages and a few extra items we requested. However, after inquiring about our order, we were told that the kitchen was "backed up". Our food orders arrived 45 minutes after we ordered. This restaurant is a fine choice if you have plenty of time. The option to make reservations is a plus.
Loved the Brussel sprouts, the wine was decent, but wished that it was byob, to bring my own.
Ate here largely because of its proximity to the theater next door. Wonderful experience!
All was good. Had not been there before. Food was delicious.
We very much enjoyed the diverse choices, especially for appetizers.
Nice selection of wines, and cocktails.
Better than expected!
Good food. Service a bit slow. But to their credit, it was a weekend night prior to a play and a movie show. So lots of people to serve in a short amount of time
Had a fantastic brunch - the homemade croissants were a standout favorite! Wonderful meals for kids, too. Always one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants!
Perhaps it was just an off night, our waiter was also the bartender, someone else brought the food and at first gave us the food for a nearby table. The restaurant was not the least bit crowded. At the end of our meal we ordered coffee. It was awful, made me think of office coffee at the end of the day when someone forgot to turn the pot off, When asked he did take it off the bill.
Dined here before a movie ar the MusicBox - we were late, they were so nice! They brought our food quickly, so we didn’t miss the movie opening. And the food was delicious - fresh, creative, satisfying and right-priced. Must try the sweet potato carmelized onion tart. Cocktails were good. Service was above excellent - attentive and fast without being intrusive. Will definitely go back!
Good food and excellent service, perfect for pre-theater.
Liked the personal welcome by the owner, and his investment in our enjoying ourselves. The food and drink were very well-prepared and tasty (fried olives) and savory tart and seafood linguine. The waiter was friendly and helpful but seemed a little harried. Would definitely come back especially after a movie at the Music Box. Like the transition from Deleece to Grassroots.
Went there because it was close to movie theatre. Food was very good - we had soups, salads, appetizers, and dessert. All good - no complaints. Server was knowledgeable and helpful.
The place was clean. Very small menu without many options. The food had no flavor. I would not say it is a bad place to go, it was simply not what I expected
Located adjacent to the Mercury Theater, Grassroots provides an excellent dining experience before a show. The restaurant was crowded, and it took a while before our dinner was served, but the staff did make certain that it arrived in time for us to catch the performance. The dishes are creatively prepared and served, and the pastas are homemade (perhaps accounting for the relatively long wait.) If you give yourself 90 minutes before the show, you should be able to enjoy an excellent dinner without feeling rushed. Reasonably priced and definitely recommended.
Great place to eat before the Theater. Only have to park once. Good food, service and friendly staff.
If you like Brussels sprouts get the appetizer. Delicious! Had the arugula and Fig salad. Also enjoyed the margherita pizza, chicken sandwich and tuna tacos. Everyone in our party was happy and satisfied. Would definitely return.
Lovely Christmas prix fixe food and cocktails at a great price!
Not really impressed with the food. The service was good.
Great spot for a casual dinner. Kid friend;y with great food options and good prices.
The staff at Grassroots was incredibly welcoming and accommodating. We had our 2 year old daughter with us, and the staff did everything they could to make sure that we all enjoyed our meals. Thank you for being so family friendly!
We enjoyed Christmas Eve dinner here. Very kind service and a very good dinner in a quiet setting after the theater.
Great menu with plenty of options for any party. Perfect for our dinner before The Christmas Schooner at the Mercury Theater.
The restaurant was loud and the wait staff was not attentive, not even the host as we walked through the door. Our waiter seemed overly stressed and rushed and did not tell us about the wine specials. The food was ok. Our calamari was over done and overly crunchy almost to the point of being inedible. The steak tacos were good. Having been to the restaurant when it was Deleece and greatly enjoying it, it was a huge disappointment to experience Grassroots.
Great interesting menu and beverages.
The fried olives were a first and such a treat!
Tuesday night meal before Mercury Theatre. Glass of red for wife, sazerac for me. Both good. Shared the roasted brussels: delicious. Also split salad and salmon dish. Everything excellent. Service was great. Thank you
Solid, fresh food with normal portion sizes. Perfect atmosphere for lunch.
