Excellent service, food and ambiance.
The restaurant lived up to my expectations. I booked them for a quiet, romantic dinner, at it was worth the reservation. The meals were delicious, and creatively prepared, and their service was wonderful.
Great menu, good variety to select from. . . one of the quieter restaurants in the area.
Although we have eaten at Grand Cru several times for dinner, we had not been there for lunch. The $14.00 menu offers a salad or soup followed by any of the several sandwiches or crepes on the menu. A la carte options are certainly available but the menu is very good and the terrace is ideal on a good weather day.
A group of friends met up at Grand Cru for lunch for our first visit. We were pleased with the ambience and menu selections. Service was at a relaxed pace and could have been a bit more attentive since we were on a schedule. Food was well prepared. Overall an enjoyable experience.
Our waiter was just plain grumpy with us. He did not want a table of 7 and he knew he would get a 20 percent automatic tip regardless of his service, which made a bad situation worse. Very disappointing. I had to shield my guests from his behavior all evening.
This was our first time at the restaurant and it was wonderful. Great wine selection and great food. A very enjoyable evening.
Waiter was not very pleasant or helpful.
This was a business lunch. I had a side salad and some duck breast crepes and my guest had the French onion sup and a salad. Everything was perfect. It can be noisy, but I expected that, as it is a popular lunch spot in Ballston.
We ordered the following items:
* Mussels - Good
* Foie Gras - I did not expect this to be sweet and fruity.
* Escargot - The was no garlic the butter for us to dip the bread.
* French Onion Soup - The soup was not hot. It was just warm. There was no color on the cheese.
The first waiter was so rude. He treated us like we couldn't afford to dine here. I had to give him my credit card first. The manager had to send in a second waiter. After the appetizers, we did not want to order anything else and we paid and left. This was suppose to be my birthday dinner from my wife. This restaurant used to be one of my favorites but not anymore.
We had reservations for 645 and were promptly seated. We were not approached for cocktails and appetizers until almost 715. Our appetizer arrived around 725 but not our cocktails. I was getting up to search for them when they finally got there. Around 730 they took our entree order. . We didn’t receive our main course until almost 8 o’clock. And then They forgot about us. We finally flagged down someone Upon request they did bring the check, but then didn’t come back to collect the payment.I had to go seek someone out to hand them the credit cards and the check. We finally got out of there around 8:50. We won’t be going back.
We have had dinner at Grand Cru three or four times in the past months, finding the location, the food, the service, and the later hours very convenient. My only wish would be for a few new additions or seasonal changes to the menu - everything is good but a new offering or two would be good.
Love going here. Best French onion soup around
Very relaxing outdoor patio. When the weather is nice, no one eats indoors. It's a lovely atmosphere. Only thing to watch out for is that when the sun is setting it moves across the tables. We had to move to a different table to escape the right sun around 6 pm.
There is an extensive wine bar area where you can choose your wine. They throw it in a vat cooler and in 5-7 minutes your wine is chilled--great opportunity. The food is very good. Scallops quite tender, though only 5-6 ocean scallops and little else with it The duck breast was moist and tasty. But surprisingly, best of all, was the Steak Frites. Now this is not at all what you would get in Paris--it's better. The steak is not the thin pan fried French version; it was a thick steak cooked to perfection with a wonderful seasoning and charcoal broil.
We'll be back.
We love grand cru! The food, drinks and service are always amazing. The menu is changed frequently with new and interesting choices.
This was our anniversary dinner. Initially my husband called to make reservations but was told after being on hold for awhile that they had no availability. I got on Open Table and was able to make reservations immediately! We had the cheese board which was good. Good crackers instead of bread & some nuts added would have made it great. I had the scallops which were awesome. My husband had the filet & liked it. We shared the chocolate mousse for desert and it was great. Portions were perfect! I never eat an appetizer, main meal, and desert! We’ll definitely go back. Hoping they have chateaubriand next time!
Hard to beat good wines, a nice choice of small plates, and a pleasant evening. Greatly enjoyed!
Disappointed with Steak Frites. Requested medium and steak was med rare and extra chewy. I generally do not send back steaks, but should have.
Overall great. Only complaint was we ordered appetizers and they did not give us time to enjoy them. Entrees came out just a few moments later. We have been here several times and will continue to come back.
It’s was Mother’s Day, the service was slow but the waiter was friendly and polite. I hadn’t been there for several years and was surprised at how much larger it is. Everything was okay, just not quite what I had hoped for. My mother said she’d come back just for the dessert. She loved her pear tart! Also, none of us drank wine, so I can’t speak to the variety of those offerings.
Service is very blasé. French toast said it came with home fries (??) and they actually pushed back a bit on giving me a little fruit instead.
We dine here often and take friends and out of towners too! Great food, great ambiance..good time!
My pork medallions came from the kitchen after the other plates were served and were warm - not hot.
Great location great wine selection And good food. The service was spectacular.
Very nice restaurant and ambiance. I will be coming back....
Met a friend here whom I hadn't seen in years. The ambiance was perfect. Food and service were excellent. Would definitely make the same choices again.
Great place. French Onion soup was the best I’ve had in a long time. Steak and Frites was great.
Food and wine pairings were excellent. Service was top notch.
Great food, excellent service and superb wine selection! Add to that, their mark up on bottles of wine is much less than most other restaurants....anywhere in the Northern VA or DC area. Jeff & Rosann Williams
Waiter screwed up two appetizers one drink and one main. Thankfully was not out with a client.
Lovely Easter 3 course brunch with very creative, delicious and numerous choices for each course. Very good drink/wine recommendations. We ate inside due to a breeze and chilly conditions, but the ideal seating location is outside in the courtyard.
Food is always on point. Our server, Melvin, great!
Dinner was delicious and the wine recommendations were superb! Will go back!
BLUFF: Sadly we won't be back. Very mediocre food. My appetizer was the worst escargot. Steak was good but the frits were sub-par. Ambiance was good and wine selection was reasonably priced. Look, there are so many other great French /Belgium restaurants in the area such as Le Diplomate in DC or Matisse or Brassiere Beck also in DC.
Absolutely a delightful venue! The unique shape of Grand Cru makes it even more interesting. The food is consistently excellent; the wait service is always enthusiastic and professional. Our wait staff was very knowledgeable about the wines. We were most impressed.
Definitely a spot you can take your grand mom or mom and dad to. Service was a bit slow now and then but it was a Sunday pm with a small staff on hand, we were not in a hurry. Wine flights were fun and a good way to experience and compare some new wines. Food was good but both entrees were de-glazed with a sweet note that is not to our liking. All in all a very nice dinner and will recommend to those seeking a traditional meal/ambiance.
They validated our parking ticket though we arrived 30 min before the validating time, 6:00 - closing. It was nice gesture. Courteous staff. Beef steak I ordered was nice and tender. Unfortunately, the spinach was a bit too salty to my taste. We liked the ambiance which was very French with brick wall and paintings of French ladies. Nice selection of tables and chairs as well. We will be there again in a near future.
Everything was amazing. The food, drinks, service, etc. This is definitely a new favorite of ours!
We are regulars and enjoy Grand Cru very much. We especially love the warm service, wine selection, atmosphere (you can actually have a conversation because the music isn’t insanely loud!), and of course the food. We’d like to see the menu change a bit more often but we always enjoy our meal and wholeheartedly recommend Grand Cru!
