About Graffiato

Chef Isabella serves seasonal, artisanal pizzas and small plates inspired by the food he grew up eating in New Jersey prepared by his Italian-American grandmother. With heavy influence from Chef Isabella’s Mediterranean and Latin culinary training, Graffiato is anything but a traditional Italian eatery. Roasted potato gnocchi with pork ragu, chicken thighs with pepperoni sauce, charred octopus with tomato mostarda and mint, and hanger steak with pancetta and wild mushrooms are a few of the signature wood oven roasted dishes. Broccolini with red pepper relish and smoked beets with sheep’s milk ricotta are popular first plates. When the kitchen closes, the oven will stay fired to feed Washingtonians looking for a late-night bite.

A little over priced for the selection but the food quality makes up for it. And the pomegranate mimosa was amazing!!

Great new find... My lunch companion and I decided to veer away from our usual lunch spots. I am happy that we tried Graffiato. I really enjoyed the potato gnocchi with the absolutely delicious short rib ragu topped with robiolina (a soft, smooth Italian cheese, which looks like cream cheese, but is the texture of whipped cream/whipped butter). The short rib ragu was flavorful, a little spice, with plenty of short rib, and the potato gnocchi were light, but heavy enough to support the hearty ragu. The flavors of the short rib ragu, robiolina and potato gnocchi made for a delicious dish. My lunch companion ordered the Forager, a vegetarian pizza with artichoke, mushrooms and garlic, which was also delicious.

Went for brunch with a group of friends. Was sat on the lower level where the bartender was serving the bar as well as the tables. We ordered the bottomless brunch and felt like we didn't get our moneys worth and the chicken was undercooked. Other than the chicken being undercooked (which the kitchen replaced) the food overall was good.

I'll chalk it up to a series of unfortunate events but our experience at Graffiato was just that--an unfortunate event. We had a reservation and were seated right away which was great but our waiter also appeared to have to be the bartender and his attention was very scattered. Every one of our dishes was incorrect in some way and we couldn't seem to flag anyone down to correct it.
Once we did get the food (italian doughnuts, a frittata, and another egg dish) it was delicious. Also the grapefruit mimosa is wonderful.

The quality of the food is not on the level it has been in the past. Our pasta was very undercooked—I prefer my pasta al dente, but this was way under even that. Our steak was lukewarm (bordering on cold) and tough/dry (ordered medium rare). Our server was kind and friendly, but when we requested steak knives for our food, he handed them to us blade-first with the tips pointed at our faces. It seems like there needs to be some re-training for both the food and service. I’ve loved coming here in the past, but after this meal, I won’t be coming back.

We've been here several times for dinner but this was our first brunch. I ordered the frittata and my wife got the chicken and waffles. Both were excellent. However, the orders were not brought out together. I waited a full five minutes after my wife was served before I had to flag down a server to check on my order.

The vegetable dishes at Graffiato are the best anywhere. Sandwiches are huge! I would love to see the brussels sprouts return to the lunch menu!

The service was terrible. The staff was unfriendly and not once made a point of engaging with us in conversation. We sat at the bar and there was not even a smile or an acknowledgement we were there!
The restaurant is dirty and so is the bathroom. Huge disappointment!

We went several years ago and LOVED the food, but this time we were a bit disappointed. We enjoyed the calamari and cauliflower, the pizza with meatballs was fine, but the seafood tagliatelle had no flavor and the lamb wasn't well cooked.

Graffito has become a go-to for good food when friends are in town. It reasonably priced and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu! But be sure to order a couple dishes and sides since they are smaller portions.

We went for the Feast of the Seven Fishes menu on Christmas eve. Waited a while for the hostess to show up to the stand but it was busy. I was a bit surprised at how casual the restaurant was. Servers were very good and worked as a team to ensure good service. Courses were tasting menu sized but at the end of the meal we had had enough food but were not stuffed (a good thing). Excellent meal in all.

Our group started in the bar for happy hour. The house red was quite good for the price, and the sliders (meatball and eggplant parm) and little pizza pops were very good. For starters at dinner, we ordered the burrata and the cauliflower to start--both were DELICIOUS. I would say the biggest let down was the pasta, which is surprising. We got three different pastas--squash agnolotti, seafood tagliatelle, and the shells with sausage and broccoli rabe. Of the three, the shells were probably the best, but I felt all of them were missing something. The sauces were runny, and the pasta itself just seemed like basic dry pasta and didn’t have that fresh pasta texture that I would expect from the price points. They were all good, but I have had MUCH better pasta for the same price or less. For dessert, we had the zeppoles, which were melt-your-mouth fantastic. I would recommend this restaurant for basically everything but pasta! I can’t believe I am saying that!

This was simply not their night. Service was horrible. It took 10 minutes for our server to come to our table. Hostess gave us water glasses, but it took the expediter to notice we still didn't have water, after our server came (and went) for our drink and appetizer order. Arancini and Calamari came quickly, and our salads came when aps were still hot on table. Then, nothing. For 45 minutes. Our entrees were never fired. At 75 minutes past our arrival, we flagged our server down for our check, since we had Wizard tickets and needed to leave. The manager, not the server, was apologetic. They made things right via check and a gift card, but we were so disappointed. We had been looking forward to this meal since way before our reservation.

I was shocked by how empty the restaurant was for Sunday brunch in DC. We were one of only 3 seated tables. Despite the place being empty, the service was slow and disjointed. The food portions were tiny and everything was very expensive. The meal was nothing special at all. Not typical Mike Isabella. Would not return for brunch and would be hard-pressed to return for dinner.

Had a blast and the food was great. The show stopper was the crazy Roman candle thing brought to our table, lit, for my companion who was having a bday. It was outrageous and done simply based on what I must have said in my Open Table reservation. I completely forgot and wasn’t expecting anything. Well done, Graffiato.

My second time at Graffiato, the first time I sat upstairs and had the tasting menu. This time, I got there 10 min before my reservation and was asked if I would be ok with being seated in the downstairs section, I said ok. The atmosphere downstairs is more laid back that upstairs and not quite what I'd like for a date. I ordered from the entree menu this time and the portions are not really substantial, the food also came out lightning fast, which is good and bad. It was good, but was it just reheated? When I ordered the tasting menu last time, the items took quite longer to come to the table. Maybe the downstairs is more for a quick bite kinda thing and the upstairs more for an actual dinner experience as downstairs had more of a "bar" kind of vibe. I'll still return, but I'll sit upstairs only.

The food was delicious but the portion was extremely small which made the price high for the amount of food received. We had the lamb dish. Very tiny portion. The salads were larger than the entrée. Enjoyed the meal overall.

The food was uneven. The mushroom risotto was heavy on white wine and not integrated into the dish. It was as though it was added on top. The butternut squash agnolotti wS more like ravioli but delicious. The pistachio pesto on ravioli wS over salted and ruined the delicacy of the ricotta cheese ravioli. The noise was overwhelming upstairs. They were out of the wine we wanted. We couldn’t hear each other. No bread was served. Altogether disappointing with great service!

I have been in search for panna cotta this good since I was in Italy. Amazing!

That said, my trip was quite disappointing. The food is on the verge of excellent, however, it came out lukewarm, at best. We sent it back and it wasn't much better the second time. These are tiny plates, and should not be cold halfway through eating. That, on top of staff wait staff who paid us little attention and tables so close together you can hardly move, I don't know that I'd return.

First off, the food is fantastic. I haven't had a dish here that I didn't enjoy. However, I have been here twice (once for dinner, once for brunch) and the service was...rough...each time.

For dinner, our appetizers came out quick, even quicker than our drinks. But then there was significant (more than 30 minute) lull till the first of three entrees came out. There was another 15 minute break before the second, then 20 minutes before the pizza. It was an uncomfortable experience for the three of us. To eat, or wait and see how long it is till the next plate hits the table? The server knew it was bad, but it didn't seem like there was any effort to rectify it. The manager touching the table would have gone a long way.

For brunch, we had a similar experience. Off the bat the server seem disinterested in the our table. When we asked for a few moments to decided, she disappeared for 15. We opted for the bottomless option. Food again hit the table before the drinks. The two guests who got mimosas got their drinks 10 minutes before the guest who got a beer got theirs. 3 dishes hit the table fast, but then we were 20 minutes without another dish. Dish, wait. Dish, wait. Repeat for 1.5 hours.

As someone who works in the industry, pacing is such an important aspect of the overall dining experience. There are small things throughout the meal that a server or management can do to better the experience, even if the kitchen is having a bumpy time. Graffiato, while the food is delicious, does not seem to have mastered this. I would recommend, but maybe for take-out.

Sometimes when you go to brunch and there is a bottomless food option, the food is just “meh” quality. At Graffiato, the bottomless brunch food menu is absolutely delicious, fresh and unique. Although a bit more expensive than other brunches, I would say it’s absolutely worth a try!
