Gracias Madre - Newport
The idea of Gracias Madre was first conceived while visiting the families of our employees in Mexico. We wanted to do both; offer organic Mexican food to the communities we serve as well as honor the mothers who work tirelessly in the kitchens of Mexico and often live without their husbands and children while they work side by side with us in California. Inspired by some of the recipes of these families and the love of their mothers, Gracias Madre serves organic, farm fresh, locally sourced food, full of flavor and love with a menu spearheaded by Executive Chef Alan Sanz and agave-based cocktail program by Beverage Director Maxwell Reis.

Food was marginal
We loved the design of the space and the beautiful, colorful bar area. The wait staff was so attentive, the food arrived quickly, and perfectly hot, and the attention to detail for my husband's food allergies over the top. Ask, and they can provide a list of foods/dishes that satisfies your needs! Definitely recommend and will be back!
West Hollywood is better. Won’t be going back
I booked a reservation for my birthday over the weekend (had to book one week in advance as it gets pretty busy!) But it was also raining so they couldn’t seat anyone outside. The overall vibe and service was outstanding. And wow, the food was just delicious! I was the only vegan out of my whole family and even they thought it was fantastic. I’d definitely recommend to anyone, vegan or not!
This was a great find for vegan and vegetarian cuisine. The flavors are amazing. My rating is really based on the noise level. It was very hard to have a conversation even at our own table. Other than this it was really great!!
The food was so delicious! We took our waiter up on his recommendations and we were not disappointed. The ceviche, street corn, enchiladas, chile relleno, and chimichanga were so tasty. We couldn't stop eating! And of course, the cocktails were amazing--super fresh and strong! We will be back.
Great to see Gracias Madre in Orange County. This is an energetic place with fabulous vegan food.
A nice vegan addition to the OC dining-scape, but not as good as the WeHo location. The seating arrangements inside are very tight, with the tiniest tables for 2 I've ever seen at a full service restaurant. Service was friendly, but somewhat infrequent. Food and drink were delicious, but with the location's other shortcomings felt overpriced. Hopefully with time they'll work out the kinks and make the OC location as great as their others!
This restaurant is AMAZING! Will be going back again and again.
I would recommend Gracias Madre to a friend if they are vegan or vegetarian. I loved the food. My husband was a little disappointed with the enchilada filled with potato. Would you ever do a similar dish with sweet potato or mushrooms like the "mushroom carnitas" burrito done by CG? Also I ordered a margarita and it was gone in about 5 sips. My opinion is that it was a little skimpy. Otherwise perfect meal!
I think the restaurant is beautifully decorated, but the music was so loud that we could barely hear each other. I was with a 22 year old and a 31 year old and two 40 year olds and they all agreed it was too loud. The service was good, a little slow but he was so nice and as helpful as he could be. The food was good, the cauliflower dish was amazing and so was the ceviche, everything else was just okay. The prices were ridiculously expensive for what you get. We had the mushroom tacos and it only came with 2 little tacos for $18.00. No rice, beans, veggies, nothing. I never have a problem paying for amazing, innovative food, but I felt ripped off on this one. I will not be going back to this restaurant and I cannot in good conscious recommend it.
The night tonight was cold. Unfortunately, half the heaters on the patio were not working and the inside was cold because the large doors are wide open at all times. Leaving us at a table that was on the cold side.
We came in for the meatless Monday’s deal and being gluten intolerant, I asked the server if they could make mine gluten free. She was not very accommodating.
I asked to speak to a manager and she took so long and since we were about to freeze, we left.
Hope they fix the heaters and learn to be more accommodating.
Yes; but it does not clearly say anywhere that is all plant based
We had a great experience at Gracias Madre ... wonderful to see the exciting things they are doing with Vegan faire. The ambiance is warm and relaxing. If I had a gripe at all, I think their wine prices are too high. $20 and above for a "glass" is ridiculous. They told us we were not allowed to bring our own and pay a corkage fee due to everything needing to be "organic" ... but I am pretty sure my Cakebread Chardonnay is not "organic" grapes, though I could be wrong. But to me that is a small thing and now I know. The food, and service from the time we stepped inside the door was top notch.
We had a good experience at the bar before we sat down to eat. However, once we sat down we were not greeted by our waiter for over 10 minutes. Not really sure where the miscommunication was. The food was fine, but they kept clearing our plates before we were finished and tried to clear our drinks before they were empty. I understand that they just opened and know that it takes a while to get into the grove. Everyone was really nice, but the service just wasn't great. The server did apologize several times which was appreciated. I also thought it was odd that he told us to come back next time and ask for him and maybe he could get us a free dessert. We are not from Newport Beach so we probably won't be back.
Birthday. Waiter was great. This is one of my fave restaurants in SF. So happy that you’ve opened here.
Really disappointing!! Expected more out of a Mexican style vegan restaurant, the food was really bland. Service was great though.
We love the WeHo location and we’re excited to have one in the OC. My husband has dietary restrictions and our server Emily went above and beyond to figure out a fish he could have . We so appreciated her attention and also the chef who was supportive as well.
The craft cocktails and setting are a highlight. The flavors on the food are just okay. The portions are extremely small for the price.
After many years of driving to West Hollywood to eat at Gracias Madre, I was thrilled when I heard one was opening in my neighborhood. I have been to the Newport Beach location twice so far and found the food and atmosphere to be great. I have had the Jackfruit tacos, the BLTA and the ice cream with Mexican wedding cookies. All of these dishes were extremely tasty. I was amazed with the coconut bacon in the BLTA. It tasted better than real bacon as no pigs were harmed! My new goal in life is to eat my way through the entire menu! See you at Gracia Madre!
Got drinks over 1/2 way through dinner, food was less than average overall- some things were fantastic like guac and ceviche. Service was lacking at best. Loved our experience at the LA location- and was thrilled to have something closer to home, but this was a big disappointment.
Although the food is decent, the service sucks at both locations (Newport Beach and Hollywood). It lacks customer service skills.
Great update to the space but the food was not fantastic - tacos were so strong with cloves and all food was luke warm. Only the mushroom fajita and tortillas were served hot. The server was really distracted and left us sitting for long periods of time unattended. I could see her chatting to a co-worker. The live music was nice and the margaritas were tasty. I know they just opened but the menu was a bit dull to make this a regular spot for myself personally. Patio was freezing cold.
Birthday dinner with my wife and daughters
I took my wife there for our anniversary. This was a first time visa for both of us. Everything was amazing. We were early for our reservation and they still seated us outside as requested. The service was first class and the food...oh my...the food was amazing. We are going back for sure!!!!
The food was overpriced and mediocre. The Gracias Madre in West Hollywood is much better. I was excited to have one in Orange County, but the food was not as good and the service was inattentive. I saw one family turned away due to a two hour wait while there were plenty of empty tables. They just opened and may still be figuring things out, but I won’t be back soon.
It was great! They were accommodate all of our requests and seat us at our favorite table. Will be back!
Food was amazing ! Chef Alan’s dishes take me back in time when my mom use to cook!
Great experience. Made reservation on open table. Hostesses were very welcoming offered a blanket to keep warm. ♥️
The ambience is spot on.
Drinks originally order Micheleda de Madre only to have our server come back and inform us that they were out at 15:30.
Wow! Ended up ordering the jalapeño Margarita which was amazing.
Appetizers ordered the crab cakes and guacamole with chips. Ordered entrees later in the sitting. Server checked in on us and realized our entrees hadn’t come out. Ordered another round of drinks. Different server brought our drinks without the garnished. I asked and she said “oh well, they forgot it I guess.” Didn’t offer to bring the garnish or take it back to the bar. Mentioned it to our server and went and got the garnish.
Main entree took a lot longer than anticipated. Once we got our food was extremely good. Ordered the fresh flour tortilla ... brought our corn. Asked the server he said they don’t have flour despite seeing another table with flour tortillas.
Even though this location recently opened on the 15th, there’s a lot of opportunity to improved server and quality control. West Hollywood location has it down.
We certainly look forward to dining at this location again.
Came in just a week after they had opened and it’s a great renovation to the old Café gratitude space which was already beautiful. We were specially surprised by live music and a great guitar player, some good happy hour food and drinks and excellent service. Thank you for a nice evening keep up the live music and happy hour for sure!
Highly recommend the chef’s tasting menu to try a little bit of everything. Service was great. Love sitting outdoors as the decor is very chic and trendy.
A great vegan restaurant, with a good happy hour. Food was excellent, very tasty. Prices are good on happy hour, a little expensive for dinner.
Very obvious that it’s a new restaurant. Staff is nice but very slow and bad and unknowledgeable. Food was good, drinks were good. Nothing great. Watermelon jerky was really bad, do not order. Best dessert was churros. Extremely overpriced for size/entree/what the dishes were and cocktails. Will only come back during happy hour, if I come back at all
We have eaten at Gracias Madre in Hollywood. The food was equally good, but it wasn’t as noisy as Hollywood. There is a large variety of dishes on the menu plus a separate Happy Hour menu (stops at 6 pm). It great to have a vegan restaurant with excellent food in Newport Beach!
Unfortunately when we arrived to our reservation we were not acknowledged for up to 25 min. We have to flag down a manager just to get our beverages. They were not busy and we felt like we were ignored. I believe it was the manager that tried to make things better but the meal just got worse. We ordered and the food came greasy and cold. We returned the food not wanting a replacement.( they gave us one anyways) We wanted the other plate to be reheated and it didn’t come back till 15 min later. We had most of our meal covered but we were there for over an hour and left hungry and unsatisfied. The manager really tried his best but his staff really didn’t meet expectations.
Very poor service.
Not sure what it is about the Gratitude Team but the food is just as bad as before. The space is beautiful but the food is very underwhelming and very overpriced.
Excellent food, good service and wonderful ambiance. Would definitely recommend!
We came on Saturday, the second night it was an open, and it was sadly such a disappointment. I live up in LA and have frequented the West Hollywood location often, so I was excited to have a reservation for the new location in Newport. First, we were seated about 30-40 minutes after our reservation time. Then, when we were sat, we ordered cocktails/drinks. After about 25 minutes, we got our drinks....but they were the wrong drinks. We received a glass of prosecco instead of a jalapeño margarita. After waiting another 20 minutes, we received our cocktail. We then received our food order, but it was the wrong food order. We ordered the portobello tacos and received the portobello fajitas. After sending the food back, we came back with just the chimichanga, and it was ice cold. After 1.5 hours of just one frustrating experience after another, I finally told our waitress that while we understand this is the first weekend open, this had been such a frustrating and disappointing experience. They sent us off with apologies. While I would love to support this restaurant and come back, I don't know if I would. Gracias Madre is one of my favorite restaurants, so I am hoping the Newport location can fine tune to make experience for the guests better.
The food was delicious and creative. The atmosphere is very nice. We will definitely be back!
