Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant - DC Ratings and Reviews
Service was very slow. They did send me a larger beer at one point, because it took over 15 minutes to come out to me. Waitress would disappear for long periods of time. Probably took 20 minutes for her to come back for my credit card when I placed it with the bill right away. Ordered two different single tacos (steak & fish) and a house salad. She could have warned me the tacos were 2 bites each, literally the smallest things I have ever eaten. So I sadly left hungry. My date had the "light" spicy chicken/lettuce tacos, which were larger and yummy, although very spicy if you can't handle too much heat.
Usually I love this restaurant, but on this occasion, the service was exceptionally poor. We arrived a few minutes early for a 6pm reservation and were told we would be seated within four minutes. However, they wanted to seat us in a booth with another party of two that we did not know. We thought this was strange, but agreed. After waiting for almost twenty minutes and watching at least a half dozen parties be seated that had entered after us (we had a reservation), we went to the desk and asked what was up. They then seated us immediately, and fortunately we did not have to share a table.
Our waiter brought us water and came back about ten minutes later to take our drink orders. We then did not see him for about 45 minutes. During which time, some other server brought our drinks and we had to grab the waiter from the tables adjacent to ours in order to get our food order in. The food and beer were great, and the guy that actually took our order was helpful. But we only saw our supposed server again when he brought us the check (and we had to flag him down, otherwise he would not have come over). We were going to the Capitals game, and ended up barely being on time, despite having a reservation for an hour and a half before the game started.
We had a 5:30 reservation before a 7:00 puck drop at Capital One Arena. We were ready to order by 5:45 but the food didn't arrive until after 6:20. The fish tacos were delicious, the blackened fish sandwich was good, as was the grilled salmon. The first thing delivered was a cup, rather than bowl, of soup brought by a runner. Rather than sending it back he ate it. IT was a full 15 minutes before our server came with a bowl only to notice the cup. The explanation for the delay was that the kitchen was slammed. In truth, the restaurant was not full at all, at least by standards of the past. We finished and were out at 6:50 - a bit tight but we made it.
Our server checked on us 15 times. It was so overbearing. Then she didn’t know how to apply an open rewards credit, not my problem. My sirloin steak was not good, so she did give us a free dessert. However, I wouldn’t go back. Beers were all lukewarm, not cold.
Have eaten here many, many times--especially before Caps hockey games. But I have never had their pizza. Tried it this time and it was TERRIFIC. And the serving size was more than ample. I am usually a member of the Clean Plate Club but I just couldn't eat it all.
Stopped for dinner before a Capitals game. Food was very, very tasty. I expected it to be another burger place but menu had more options than I expected. Plus, my dinner partner and I were able to carry on a conversation even though the restaurant was fairly crowded. Would definitely go again.
We hit this place for dinner before a Capitals game. It's 2 short blocks to the Cap One Center, so location was great. I got a reservation at the last minute and they were still able to seat us pretty quickly. They also got us in and out in about 45 minutes, despite the crowds, which was really appreciated because we were running late. Food was fine - nothing special but not bad either. I got a salad that came with a mix of romaine and spring greens. Everything was fresh but the toppings were a bit sparse. My husband got a margharita flatbread pizza that was good and ahi tuna nachos that were also good but had sparse toppings. Was more like fried chinese noodles with siracha mayo. Flavors were good but the description said it would have pineapple and scallions, which I didn't even notice were on the plate until we were 1/2-way through the pile of chips because there were so few and on the back of the plate.
Terrible experience on 10/7/17. Had a reservation 5:45. Arrived early and was seated after a few minutes. Down hill from there. Took forever for the server to even acknowledge us. Even longer for her to come back and take an order. Waited 15 minutes to get one of 2 drinks, and another 5 after I said something to get the other. The staff clearly did not have it together. You could hear them at the bar complaining and arguing about orders. Watched a couple at the table next to us get just as frustrated when they received the wrong check. After 45 min. I started asking for at least our salads. The response was that the servers were not allowed in the kitchen. With no food in sight I asked for a manager. One came over and he too really had no explanations other than to tell us the kitchen was 30 minutes behind. At this point I asked for the check. Another 10 minutes and a separate manager came over. Very nice and apologetic, but it was too late - and we still didn't have food. We left hungry and aggravated. Note: It was opening night for the Washington Capitols and it was crowded - just like it is for every Caps game. Nothing out of the ordinary, they just really dropped the ball.
This was my umpteenth visit to this particular location as we tend to go here prior to an event at the Verizon Center (Capital One Arena). We've never been disappointed. I have never made a reservation through Open Table, however, and this was nice and easy to do. Dinner for 6 people and we were seated immediately -- although the hostess desk was waayy backed up -- they should have had more than one person checking in. Waiter was nice although he failed to check on his several times as we would have ordered additional cocktails if he had done so. All food was great and served at the same time even though we had 6 separate orders. Overall, will continue to be my go-to place for events.
If you're looking for a reasonably priced place to eat in the heart of downtown DC, that is located in a beautiful building, with a large selection of menu items to choose from, then this is the place for you. The food is not pretentious, just delicious! My favorite are the southwest egg rolls and the Martzen!
I love Gordon Biersch, and I belong to their passport Rewards Club, and I get Growlers of beer filled there routinely, and I've been to this particular location in Chinatown probably 40 or 50 times in the last decade. This was one of the stranger experiences, because we had a very frenetic but very friendly server, a ribeye that more closely resembled a hanger steak, a chef who just couldn't get a steak rare, and a strange coughing fit that took over the entire outdoor portion of the seating as we were finishing up. On the other hand, the beer was great, the salmon ordered was one of the best I've ever had including a tremendous bourbon glaze, and the Oktoberfest sausages were succulent. And while the server may have been hyperactive, she was accurate and clever. The only complaint was that the appetizer came out with the entrees, which resulted in a huge amount of food to try to eat before it all went cold.
Our visit was a casual dinner at the end of a hectic day of sightseeing. This was exactly what we were looking for and restaurant was not too busy. The menu had plenty of good choices and the service was good. We would return if we are in the area in the future.
A good spot for casual, quick bites for tourists or business meals, and a good spot to have a couple beers at the end of a work day.
I don't find the menu to be unique, different, or creative in any way, its just standard bar/pub food. That said, the quality of the ingredients and the preparation of the food is good, the portion sizes are huge...for big eaters!
Other than a quick business meal, or a casual spot to eat when running around downtown I don't consider this as special, or noteworthy in any way.
Staff were very friendly and accommodating and opened up the outside seating area just for our group of 5! Noise level inside was quite high so we really enjoyed being outdoors. The bratwurst sliders, burger sliders, mini kale and quinoa salad--along with flights of beer--were delicious and very good for group sharing. I had joined their Passport Rewards Program and their discount coupons were generous and easy to redeem.
Great ambiance in historic building. All of us loved our food, though my only complaint is some of my food was not hot enough (temperature). Lobster-shrimp tacos were as tasty as any tacos I have every had. Service was very good. We got a nice table. It is a little loud in the restaurant due to the acoustics.
Had reservations at 6:30 for a party of 8. We had tickets to a show at 8:00 one block over, thinking 90 minutes was more than enough time for dinner. While the waiter was friendly, he wasn't attentive, 15 minutes to take our drink order, another 15 to take our dinner orders and then almost 40 minutes to get our meals. We flagged down two other servers, neither were helpful. When the food finally came, four orders were wrong and two never arrived. All in all a lousy experience and we had to rush out to get to our show on time. Maybe they handle two or four tops better than they handled us. Will not be going back and will not recommend it.
