Golden Fleece is a quaint, cozy, and inviting restaurant that my sisters and I were very eager to try for some time. We finally made a point to go for my birthday. To start, we ordered the Horiatiki Salad and the Ancient Grains & Arugula salad. Both were good, but not exceptional. Being that it is December, the tomatoes in the Horiatiki salad were flavor-less. The olive oil dressing on the arugula salad was not at all complimentary- the olive oil flavor over-powered the flavors of the other ingredients.
For our entrees, we had the Australian rack of lamb, wood-fired octopus, and the risotto. My sister asked for the lamb to be prepared 'medium' but it was completely pink and still bloody when she cut into it. Not to mention, we had to persistently try to get our waitress's attention to get a proper knife for the meat. We had the chef cook the lamb a little longer, but upon the second time her dish was set before her, and as she cut into the second piece, it was still just as bloody. My sister was almost too embarrassed to send her food back to the kitchen a second time, but I insisted. The third time she got her lamb it was cooked to "well done." She nibbled on it some but did not enjoy it. The restaurant was kind enough to take that dish off of our tab.
Another thing to note for future customers is that the entres and other dishes are a la carte, so sides have to be ordered separately. In my opinion, I think that the restaurant would do well with at least listing "recommended sides" for a particular dish.
All in all, we had very high hopes for Golden Fleece. We enjoyed the ambiance and the Greek wine but were not satisfied or impressed by the food. We wanted very much to like it and to have found a great spot for upscale Mediterranean food, but will not very likely be returning.
Sax player was excellent but VERY loud. Could not hear the server at first and had to move my chair closer to the other member in my party to converse.
This was our second visit to Golden Fleece. We discovered it last year when we visited Asheville and the Grove Park Inn. The independently owned restaurant is located next to the hotel and we have eaten there on each of our visits to the Grove Park. They seem to have a large local following as well as hotel guest who have discovered them. The restaurant is cheerful with comfortable bistro seating, artwork and a friendly atmosphere. Our food and drink on both of our visits to the Golden Fleece has been excellent. It's our favorite place to dine and I'm sure we will return on our next visit to that area.
We love our returning guests! We're glad you were able to enjoy your dining experience at our cottage, and look forward to your third visit.
Exceptional food and service, matched with a rustic, charming ambiance made our evening special. The olives are a must!
We're so glad we were able to provide an exceptional dining experience for you. We hope you'll visit again soon!
Everything was fantastic. Highly recommend this lovely restaurant.
Thank you for the kind words!
This place has truly wonderful food and a lovely feel. Tonight, unfortunately, the service was pretty poor. It was clear that no one really cared that we were there — or maybe they just wanted us to leave. We asked for a wine menu and didn’t get it, we had food taken away before we were done with it, and our check was wrong (they did fix it, but in a pretty arbitrary way). I hate that this happened because I really like this place. Maybe they thought we were just some Omni people who don’t expect better? Anyway, it was a bummer.
Nice atmosphere. Food was so so. Service was mediocre. Interesting to try something new but I would it go again.
Took wife here for her birthday dinner along with two boys (10&7). Our waitress, Lori, was phenomenal and made all the right recommendations. The food and atmosphere was perfect and we will definitely be back next time we’re in town!
Excellent food atmosphere and service. It was great night out. Will look forward to coming back
Extremely mediocre food and lackluster, borderline incompetent service. We are Asheville residents, we will not be back.
Delicious fresh food in a glamorous dining room...Staff is very sweet and authentic
Thank you for the kind words. Come back again soon!
Our food was nothing short of amazing! The service was excellent and we had excellent recommendations from our server. We took a shot on this place and are still dreaming about the wonderful food that we had!
We love to hear this! We hope you'll visit again soon and try more of our slow earth cooking.
Best food I have eaten! So fresh, perfectly prepared, and served elegantly!
We're thrilled to hear this! We look forward to serving you again soon.
Food was absolutely amazing!!!
We're so glad you enjoyed it, Maegan!
Really wanted to love this experience but sadly the service was really lacking. The food was tasty and of good quality. However we waited almost 10 minutes for water. Then they forgot one of our apps and the bread we asked for (which we were also charged $1 for) came late, in addition to one of our entrees. All in all, disappointing for a $100+ meal. Maybe they were short staffed tonight?
It took way too long to get our entrees. Everything started out fine with our appetizers and salad but than it just sort of went sideways. Even getting our wine took forever.
Absolutely delicious food in an atmosphere that makes you feel like you've been transported somewhere far away. Beautiful decor and lovely drink selection, we will be back!
Thank you for your kind words, Clare. We can't wait until your next visit!
Service was not the best. The food was pretty good overall. If ordering the ribeye I would suggest asking for the temp to be cooked one level higher than your normal preference (orders medium rare, came out closer to rare). The ambiance is unique; there was great live music in one room, however our room was out of ear shot of the music and it was very loud. Overall not terribly priced.
Nice atmosphere and good food. We started with the Brussels Sprouts, perfectly charred. Then we had the lamb gyro, lamb was delicious, huge serving. And the chicken souvlaki, very flavorful and large portion for lunch. Had to ask for more water but otherwise an enjoyable lunch and the location is convenient to the Grove Park Inn and the shops and car museum of Grove Wood.
We're glad you enjoyed yourself at Golden Fleece! We look forward to your next visit.
Excellent food and professional service again. This is a consistently strong, unpretentious place with great food and nice wine selection.
We shared a poached pear, cheese ribeye steak; grilled vegetables; & for desert apple pie a la mode with French press coffee. The food & Service was good.
the staff and the surroundings were perfect for a family get together for lunch. The food was tasty and excellent.
Beautiful place! Excellent salad and lamb burger!
when this restaurant first opened it was okay. Then it got great. Then, after awhile it went downhill. Now it's great again! Let's hope it stays this way. Always a beautiful, cozy, but spacious room. Friendly service. And really delicious food. the trio of spreads are wonderful. The octopus is one of the best around. Yummy lamb phyllo things and great brussel sprouts. Go and enjoy...
We chose Golden Fleece for a birthday celebration based on other reviews and it did not disappoint!!! We were greeted warmly on a very cold, rainy evening and both the service and meal were wonderful. I would highly recommend the Golden Fleece for your dining experience if you are in Asheville for any occasion!!
We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed your time at Golden Fleece, Penelope! We look forward to hosting you again.
They were very nice.
Fantastic night with perfect cuisine. The GM came and introduced herself and was very engaging. We look forward to returning.
The main entrees were fantastic. The appetizer of saganaki was good but over cooked.
Do not miss an opportunity to dine at Golden Fleece! The chef is Greek and uses a subtle blend of different herbs and spices to change up his dishes. We ordered the trio of spreads and grilled octopus to begin and then rack of lamb, ribeyes and a lamb shank. All were generous portions and the two sides we ordered were plenty to share with nothing leftover. Truly delicious! The next day I had a bite of my husband’s ribeye that he’d brought home and I was intrigued by the flavor. It was a great steak but subtly different like I said before. The restaurant is a cool spot. The building is charming and the front room and bar are very inviting. It wasn’t busy during our visit but I imagine that bar can be a lot of fun! Parking is available at the restaurant but if need be park in the Grove Park Vanderbilt wing/garage across the street. They offer 3 hours of free parking. We went to the Inn to have a drink on a crystal clear day then dined at GF...great evening and can’t wait to take other friends and family here. Lastly I’m intrigued by the whole animal dinners they offer! Sign me up!
Great food and we got the table we requested in the first room where it’s a bit quieter. Service was excellent, too!
Thank you for the review! We look forward to your next visit.
The ambiance is a great selling point for Golden Fleece, plus it’s a restaurant where you can have a nice conversation with your tablemates since excessive noise is not a problem as it is in many local restaurants. It has a warm, intimate feeling; the service is excellent; and, the food is well-prepared and tasty. It is a fine place for a special evening out.
Thank you for the kind words, Patricia! We look forward to hosting you again.
Great evening. Our table of six was well taken care of. The triple dips with pita appetizer was excellent. We split many appetizers and a main course with the table and finished with great desserts.
Thank you for the kind words! We're happy to hear you enjoyed your meal and service at Golden Fleece.
Exceeded expectations. Wonderful.
Prompt welcome and seating, four of us in back room seated in corner, even though more spacious tables were plentiful.
One Pork sandwich was too “tough” to enjoy, slices of meat cut too thickly.
Service follow-up was non-existent— would have been better if more attention given.
Great Ambience, very comfortable seating, amazing drink menu and food.
Great food and friendly service staff make this place a great place for dinner
Even though the restaurant has a Greek name the inside art work and decor has nothing to do with Greece. I was expecting a wonderful Greek experience. The music was not even Greek. The Greek food was just average. Lamb shank a little tough and the chicken was not the traditional Greek style with the sauce. Service was not attentive. Asked for salt and pepper and he brought pepper then 10 minutes later brought the salt. It was not very busy. Water bottle empty and had to ask for more. The only Greek dessert was Baklava. It was my Birthday Dinner. I’m Greek and this was disappointing.
Unbelievable! What a hidden gem. If you're going to Omni Grove Park Inn, you MUST dine at Golden Fleece. They're not associated with OGPI. We only happened by the restaurant while taking a stroll of the Inn's grounds. What an incredible surprise! We walked in around lunch and asked to look at the menu. My husband was so impressed, we cancelled our reservations to Sunset Terrace and, instead, went to Golden Fleece. What a win! Must visit, you will NOT be disappointed. PS The only reason we ranked "noise, moderate" was that we were put in bar area and a saxophonist entertained. It was lovely, not at all interruptive of our conversation.
A perfectly delightful lunch with my husband! Great small plates to share over a long leisurely afternoon. Mimosas and craft cocktails for him. We’ll certainly be back!
