Goen Dining + Bar
Not bad, just nothing special. My husband and I were really looking forward to this place, but everything was we ordered was just ok.
It was nice to be warmly greeted and shown to a cozy table on a late wintry cold and wet night. There was service with a smile and complimentary tasty edaname to start. Menu was limited yet sufficient choice selections to satisfy. We were more than delighted with all the dishes and felt that Roy's signature was definitely evident in the creativity preparation and presentation. Goen with its casual atmosphere and upscale food and beverage is a welcomed restaurant in our Kailua neighborhood. We will definitely patronize Goen again. Thanks for a memorable meal!
Came here for a employee dinner. The food was very good and it was a nice dining ambiance. Would definitely come back here to eat. The crispy pork belly was to die for!
We had a large party so was able to try many dishes. All were very good to great. Service was excellent, attentive but not overbearing, if that makes sense. Appetizers were also great, special mention needs to be made of the pork belly and mushroom fries; both excellent.
Excellent food, service, ambiance and price
The service was very attentive including describing the food - when served (more on that later). The crab salad was excellent as was the gnocchi and the cheesecake dessert. I had the "Garden Bolognese" in a red sauce with rigatoni, which substituted vegetables (mushrooms, etc) instead of the typical beef and pork. Fine. One problem, it was *loaded* with hot red chili pepper flakes. Nowhere on the menu or other description of the food when served was there any mention of this. Chef apparently felt it was necessary to make it part and parcel of the sauce and then must have added a finishing touch on top. When the waitress asked "How's the meal" and I brought it to her attention she immediately offered, to her credit, to change it out for one without the red pepper flakes. The only problem is that we later were told it is part of the pre-made sauce so the new serving still had some. She and the manager were very apologetic and I suggested that many people try to avoid red chili pepper flakes for a variety of reasons and, at a minimum, it should be stated on the menu description.
Which brings me to the next issue. The menu is very minimalist in describing the dishes. One entry was simply "New York" with two vegetables listed below it. New York what? OK, it's probably a steak but what cut? Is New York a preparation style or cut? And then there was the Bolognese mention above.
I would go there again but I will be asking A LOT of questions before I order. Enjoy, but assume nothing.
We went on a slightly chilly night, glad I brought my jacket as all the seating is essentially outdoors. Server was very pleasant and helpful. Very aware of the menu and ingredients. We had the chicken curry soup which was wonderful. The mussels in a coconut cream sauce with peppers was very tasty. I had the fettuccine in a nice cream sauce. My partner had a pho like dish which had ver little taste. The broth was very bland. For dessert we had a vanilla cheesecake with hints of lilikoi (I did not get the hint) and it was very good. Overall a ver pleasant dinner but didn’t seem to be up the normal caliber of a “Roy’s” restaurant.
I thought our experince was good but not sure for three people it was worth what we spent especially when only two of our three party group got a main dish. However, the service was excellent.
We really liked the crab salad! We would definitely go back for that!
Our mains were not warm when they arrived at the table.
The service was fast, friendly, and they were very welcoming. The food was great, and the prices were reasonable for the quality of food. The "fry basket" which is fried mushrooms were fantastic especially if you mix the two sauces together. Overall it was a great experience and I can't wait to go back.
The food was amazing. It came out quick, beautiful presentation and great flavors. Service was great too. We were never left needing anything and menu items were explained extremely well. Her knowledge of the menu was very impressive. Very little noise, great lighting, and it’s roomy. Everyone of us was beyond impressed
Great venue- nice dining room with an open in- out look.-smallish menu, but I appreciated the vegetarian offerings and the delicious appetizers - easy to find healthy food. Looked like a great bar area!
Service was good but pacing was off and we felt rushed despite a fairly empty restaurant. Menu looked great but most items didn’t live up to their ingredient list. The potential is there, but needs better execution.
Really enjoyed it. Food was yummy.
Despite a reservation and at least 2 other apparently empty tables, we (2 women) were seated in the far corner of the noisy bar. We requested another table and had to wait another 30 minutes. We wondered if we were not women, would we have been seated there.
We had a wonderful date night dinner here. I love that the menu changes daily dependent on what is fresh and available. The cocktails were unique and delicious. The food was wonderful and well presented. Don't forget dessert! Yum! We will definitely be back.
Disappointed that they have discontinued BAO menu!!
A really nice addition to the Kailua restaurant scene. Excellent food, very good service, and a great location. We were there twice during our four-day stay. Reasonably priced, too.
amazing food. quick service. lovely outdoor seating. we almost went back again the next night.
The food at Goen was good but not as impressive as I'd expected. The combinations of food were fun. It seems menu items specialize in food items that had me asking "What is this?" often. Maybe that's what makes it special. Different food selections. The ambiance was pleasant - we were there for lunch. It was noisy outside, so we ate inside. Our server was fun - upbeat, young, singing to the background music. Not great at describing the food, but we enjoyed him. Value - was good. We didn't have enough for take-home, but then restaurants these days serve more food than it's healthy to eat. I appreciated the smaller portion.
The food was ok and prices were high for lunch. I wish there were more options. We sat outside next to the street and faced Ulta Beauty. I liked that they gave spicy edamame free before the meal.
Service is excellent; the ambience is lovely. The dishes were uneven in quality. The avocado toast was very good. I was dismayed that the rice for the sushi was mushy and without much taste; the consistency of the rice was like chewing mochi. The taste of the beets were drowned out by the heavy use of cheese. The portabello fries were OK; the aioli was very good.
Great service and ambiance- good prices, a bit noisy, but you need more selection. I’m not a sushi fan so that makes your menu rather limited.
Nice upscale/casual place in he Windward side to gather with friends for drinks and pupus.
First of all, there is no identification or sign. It took me some time to find the restaurant. I ended up asking a number of people in the nearby area and they did not know where "Goen" was or is. Finally I asked a parking manager and he graciously pointed to the restaurant. Second, there is hardly any inside seating. When it rains or if there is a moderate amount of wind blowing, patrons are less than happy. Waiter kept giving me and guest food that did not belong to us. This happened on two to three occasions. Started with coffee we did not order, then main meal that was not ours and ended with desert which was not ours. ???
As always, anything by Roy Yamaguchi is excellent. So nice to have a more affordable chance to experience is food. The service was excellent and my friends and I were able to have pleasant dinner together and not feel rushed. We're be back again.
Menu was awkward. Wait staff didn’t know about the menu. Drinks were good.
Weird guy most likely on drugs came up to our table of four women. We watched several people at the restaurant notice and do nothing. We had to assertively chase him away ourselves. Not cool. Deck area is not single entry so people not dining there can approach - which doesn’t sound like a problem until you couple it with the opioid problem in Kailua.
Under-impressed with the staff, service and menu. I love Roy’s so we had high hopes. Won’t be back. Fingers crossed Maui Brewing is better.
Yum yum yum! The gnocchi app and filet mignon was incredible. Can’t wait to try it again. The pineapple cider was so refreshing. All around great meal and great service. Welcome to kailua.
Food very small portions for pupus. Very limited menu. They are trying too hard to make things fufu. Instead keep it simple. Make it appealing to local residents instead of visitors. Didn't care for limited wine list either. Just meh
We tried GOEN with my parents and had a great time - we sat outside so could also people watch and enjoyed everything from the drinks to the dessert. Even my mother, who is not an adventurous eater, found choices in the menu and loved her meal. Our waiter, Jimmy, was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better.
A big disappointment after thoroughly enjoying the original Roy’s restaurant. I understand that Goen’s is marketed as a different, more casual concept. But the menu and actual food was still a big disappointment. Everything else was mediocre and it was noisy with music blaring from the bar.
Goen was an awesome experience. Our servers name was Clay and he was amazing. He was super fun to talk to and gave us above and beyond service. I would highly recommend to anybody looking for great food and a good time. I will surely be coming back on my next trip to Hawaii
Fabulous experience. Service couldn't have been better or more attentive. Food was amazing - some truly original dishes, and it was a great deal of fun to share (everything served family-style). And, finally, at the end the prices were outstanding - not only one of the best meals we've had in a long time, but one of the best values as well.
We sat next to a family celebration that probably should have been kept at home! Kids running around, adults yelling to each other from opposite ends of a long table seating at least 14 people. We celebrated when they left!! Unfortunately our meal was ending as they finally left. I think the restaurant should notice that type of noise and chaos and deal with it for the benefit of other diners. Despite that, we’ll go back at least one more time to give it a fair shake.
I was told that I was supposed to indicate when I made the reservations that I wanted indoor seating. I do not recall having an opportunity to indicate that when I made my reservation thru open table. Thus we sat outside facing the beauty store. Our first option was facing the parking lot. Called the manager about this and she assured me that I will have indoor seating next time. But your service should have let me know that I needed to request that.
Great again! Goen does not disappoint!
Our server, Clay, took excellent care of our guests and kids with support from other staff as well. Excellent food and presentation.
Dinner was terrible - terribly expensive (for what it was), and terrible in taste. “Medium rare” salmon came out well done. The servers reaction was to suggest I douse it in extra teriyaki “to add moisture.” Other dishes were average at best. Ambience was nice...everything else was subpar.
New Years Eve dinner. Expected a better menu and more ambiance from a Roy Yamaguchi restaurant. Our server was excellent, but the food was mediocre, at best. My New York Strip Steak was cooked perfectly, except that it was 75 percent fat. Gross. Sent it back, and the next try was better. Other than replacing the dish, no extra compensation was offered. No free drinks, no free dessert, nothing off our bill for the inconvenience. Basically, they gave us minimum effort. NOT what I expect from Roy’s
